I would think they'd be in direct competition with Jetblue right from the start. Its a little disappointing. Your thoughts on why they are all "one stop" flights?

Southwest only started flying out of Logan in the last year. They only have a small number of flights and most go to Baltimore or Chicago. Over time they may add them. There are plenty of non-stops from either Manchester or Providence.

I think they look at if they will be competitive and profitable on non-stops and if it's the best use of their planes. Sometimes it's not worth it for them to get into a "fare war", they may get more customers but are losing money at the low fare. I know they dropped non-stops from Detroit, where they were competing with Northwest. Boston already has Jet Blue, AirTran and Delta non-stops, they probably don't think they will be profitable jumping in too. Orlando does not have alot of business travel so it's hard for airlines to make money in that market (business travelers tend to make last minute reservations & are willing to pay higher fares).

SW is reducing the number of flights to (leisure) destinations (MCO,LAS) that only sell at low (unprofitable/low profit) fares. Planes flying out of Logan came from dropping some lower profit flights from other cities. A flight to BWI or MDW can connect with flights to most of SW cities. SW did the same thing when they added service to LGA.

Very informative posts, thank you.
