I can't believe I'm finally doing it. I've been growing my curly hair for what seems like forever, and I'm finally getting it cut- this Saturday, just a few days before I leave for WDW.

The greatest part is that I'm surprising everyone. I've told only a few people that I'm cutting my hair. My plan is to send a few people one of those video e-mails from Mission: Space. How do I wait? I just decided to make the appointment on Sunday, and I'm already struggling not to spill the beans. How do I make the time pass, and keep the secret at the same time? :ssst:

I don't have any suggestions....I just wanted to say i think you are doing a great thing:grouphug: . My dd10 just cut her hair last week for Locks of Love.

I've done that, too! I grow my hair out for 18 mo to 2 yrs, then chop it all off and surprise everyone and donate the hair to Locks of Love. I've sent in 4 ponytails so far, with the longest being 17 inches.

I agree - the worst part is the final countdown to getting it done and trying to keep it a surprise. I usually buy myself a new hair accessory or two in anticipation of the big day - like some fun bobbypins to help hold my new short hair style out of my face while I get used to having it short again. One year I bought a fun hat to add to my collection.

Mostly I just try to go about my day and distract myself with the usual things - cleaning, hobbies, TV, DIS boards, etc.

Have fun! I'm still at least a year away from my next cut, and my hair has hit the awkward stage where I don't really like it...

Just wanted to say THANKS!!!!

I have spent more days than I wanted to on the cancer floor at Children's Hospital with my DD. We were the lucky ones!!! My DD was just 6 months old and "just" needed surgery. However, I did see a lot of children with little bald heads.:sad1: It was very sad to see.

I could only imagine how a young/teen must feel after losing all their hair. The recovery is tough enough. I spoke to a young 13 yo girl who explained that she was finally feeling better...she was very happy that day, as she had learned that she was going to get wig from locks of love. She also said she "couldn't wait to feel normal again".

So...Thank you for giving such a kind gift!!!

yay! *claps* i love locks of love!! i'm not planning on cutting my hair anytime soon, but when i do, i'm pretty sure i'm going to donate it to them too. i have really thick curly hair that's almost down to my butt, so they could make like 12 wigs out of it! lol

I donated my hair to Wigs for Kids. I cut my hair again a year and a half ago, but it's a bit shorter than the reqired 10"...I wonder if they would take it? It's in a baggie on my desk at home...

I'm not sure, but with Locks of Love, they do accept hair that is shorter than 10". They are not used for wigs, but are sold and used to fund the organization. You could call Wigs for Kids and see if they do the same thing.

Yay for locks of love! It's a great great cause - a gift that truly keeps on giving. DD5 cut hers back in the fall (as a pre-K treat) and donated 12 inches; DD9 cut hers over a year ago and wants to wait until it's long enough for LoL again before she gets another cut.

:grouphug: Good luck keeping your secret! :goodvibes

perhaps I will send it over to locks of love, then... I have great hair! :thumbsup2 lol

My DD wants to do this but I'm having a hard time finding someone who will cut it. I need to Google to find out more.

Congrats Becky! :goodvibes

when I did it, I went to supercuts. the girl tied my hair back with a rubber band, then snipped it off at 10 inches. She did the regular haircut after that.

I think you can go to the locks of love website and find out what salons in your area work with their organizationa. The affiliated salon should do it for free, and they send it in for you and etc. At least that is what our local affiliated salon does.

HTH.

good for you! my neice was diagnosed (WHILE PREGNANT at age 26) with breast cancer (double mastectomy). she opted before losing her hair involuntarily to donate it (stunning stuff-the color and curl you see in magazines)-and it inspired a host of her friends and co-workers to do the same.

MINI UPDATE: The appointment was scheduled yesterday. 11:30 AM this Saturday.

...OK, sorry, I'm just doing this for a bump. :lmao:

Good for you! :thumbsup2 We want to see a pix!

I have done it 2 times as well as one aunt and another aunt and cousin did it once each. Once my girls get tired of their past their tosh hair, they will someday.

My DH has done this twice now. It takes 2 years for his hair to get long enough to donate.

That is a great cause. Glad to hear you are donating your hair. youngest DD (Stitchfansjr) has donated her hair twice now to them.
