Local police taser a 10 yr. old girl

Hey! My desire to taze extends beyond innocent kids. I'm more than happy to have both mom and the cop tazed too!

Sounds like the best thing is for the child to be removed from the home and placed in a long-term youth facility where she can get some serious medical, psychiatric and psychological help. Something is *seriously* wrong in that house.

Oh, and while we're at it...all the adults in this situation should be required to be in counseling - the mother and grandmother before the authorities even *think* of putting the girl back with them *and* the police officer so he can make better decisions in the future.

And just what in the world was the girl, as uncontrollable as she was, being arrested for? She was in her own home having one of these emotional hurricanes...she wasn't breaking any laws.

Sounds the mother has in effect given up her parental rights.

I heard on the news last night that the officer was suspended for 7 days. He was suspended for not turning the camera on the taser. The mayor is asking the state police to come in and investigate. I do know this child does have some serious problems and could be dangerous. What I don't get is why she keeps getting sent back home. I would think this child would be in a hospital that addresses emotional/mental problems. I still think that the situation could have been handled better and the reports that she wouldn't take a shower makes it sound ridiculous.

If so the reason she keeps getting sent home is probably because health insurance will only pay for her to stay for so long and then they put her on medication that isn't fully in her system to see the effects till after she comes home. If that is the case then the mental difference might have been passed down from mom which would make it even harder for her to handle things. This is just one possibility but you really can't know or judge unless you live their life. Not that I am saying your judging just throwing out the fact that nobody really knows unless they live the life and walk the walk.

No she has been "arrested" and sent to the youth shelter and a juvenile dentention center. She has never been placed in a hospital or treatment center. I'm not sure why with her history at home and school that the juvenile Judge hasn't requested that. I also know the first time her mother called the police (my daughter was there and working with the mother at the time) a police officer helped her get the child in the car and she took her to a hospital that wanted to sedate her and keep her for observation. The mother refused and took her home.

I don't often say this but in my opinion it's time for Child Welfare/Family Services to step in. This kid need to be in front of a Family Court judge so she can get some help *before* she seriously hurts herself or others.

I just hope we're not hearing about her in a few years having done some horrible crime that perhaps could have been prevented with an intervention.

That's just wrong. The officer should be fired and the mother should be tazed. If a parent ever tazed their own child, they would surely be arrested.

How about, taze the mother, then arrest her, then fire her.

Taze and arrest her for bothering the police with this trivial matter (heck, LET the kid go to bed/school dirty), then fire her for not being able to control her child AND for giving advance permission for the child to be tazed.

I'm with you. And how small is this town that the police actually came to the house. I wonder if I call my local cops tonight and tell them DD won't take a shower, will they come out to my home to help? I think the only reason they'll come out is to check ME for mental illness and not the kid. This whole story is just sad.

In response to all the posters suggesting/asking this: You know - it's possible the town is so small there's only one officer on duty at a given time,,, or that other officers were out on real calls.

You have got to be kidding. I have had those fights (I have a teen and a pre-teen) and never once felt the need to call a cop. I've often felt the need to smack them upside the head, but have generally resisted that urge also.

The entire family needs serious therapy. Heck, I think the mother should also be fined for calling the police for no reason (like a false alarm, you know).

Using a Taser on a child is beyond wrong. Unless that was the only possible way to prevent her from killing herself or another, there is simply no excuse for what that officer did. I once heard a report on NPR about Tasers and one of the people interviewed described how a Taser feels: "like someone reached in and ripped at my muscles with a fork." These weapons bring down 350-pound hulking men. I can't even imagine what it feels like to a kid. She probably won't suffer long-term physical effects, but I'm sure the psychological effects will be long lasting.

I would also be interested to know whether he used the form of the gun that launches the probes or used it to directly apply the shock. The latter is far far more dangerous, and most law enforcement agencies only allow such use under the most extraordinary circumstances.

The juvenile centers do have mental health workers that work with them so I would almost guarantee she saw someone when there. Do you know that they did not place her on medication there?

What you said about her taking the child to the hospital and being sedated and them wanting to keep her and mother refusing doesn't make any sense. Why would she bother to have her taken to the hospital in the first place if she didn't get her help? Maybe that is exactly what she did and the biggest clue to the fact that mom is mentally ill or so mentally exhausted she can not think things through and is afraid of psychotropic medications for a child. Again who knows if they don't live the life.

I'm not a fan of the mother. She may be nutty and self absorbed but not clinically mentally ill. She is more concerned about her new boyfriend and having fun in my opinion. The step-grandmother says that they have tried some meds and nothing has helped. This mom isn't too overwhelmed she manages to go out to her new job at the jail that she thinks is so cool. She manages to out with her boyfriend and she keeps her facebook updated. It actually looks like a teenagers page. I believe the girl needs help and from what I've seen and heard someone is dropping the ball. As I posted earlier the other daughter has moved back in with her dad. She's had enough. The 10 year olds dad was on the news saying that he was going to seek custody. The problem is he's never been in her life he has abused drugs and wouldn't be any better than the mother and possibly worse. I haven't walked in their shoes but unfortunately our lives are somewhat intertwined. I don't care for these people but at times have to be around them. Again I'm not sure the right thing was done I just wish the child could get some help before she seriously hurts someone or herself.
