local mypage scandle exposes lousy parenting

Random drug testing is common at workplaces now. It won't catch most drugs if they were taken done the day before but pot stays in your system for a long time and that would be caught.

I'm on the fence on this issue. I don't think that kids drinking away from school is really the school's business but then again they did sign those contracts so they knew what they were getting into.

I'm still stunned at these goofy kids posting everything in these blogs. WHAT are they thinking?

When I went to high school, in the 80's, if the police caught a male athlete drinking, they would take him home and sweep it under the rug. To be honest, the police didn't make that much of an effort to catch any kids drinking.

Why does this thread say the parents are dropping the ball when the school is clearly relaxing its agreement. The kids should be suspended from their sports, right? Not just for one game.

I take a different view, and my kids are only 2 & 4, but I grew up in the excesses of the 80's. I am 35. My mother is a high school guidance counselor and probably wouldn't agree with what I am about to say.

Why does drinking after school hours, not on school property become the business of the school?

While I would be furious if my children were drinking, it would be our family business and I would probably yank them from their activities. I don't get why the school gets to "police" what goes on after-hours.

If you smoke pot after work, do you lose your job if you are sober when you return to work?

If you speed in your car, do you lose your job? Why doesn't the school care about speeding?

I understand the whole teen drinking thing and was very involved in anti-drinking campaigns during my high school years and I did not drink in high school. And I appreciate the schools try to prevent it...........but I think this goes too far.

To an extent, I think this plays into the "bad parenting" and perpetuates it. Parents don't have to enforce any rules because the school will do it for them and the parents continue to look like the good guy and the school looks like the bad guy. Then you get the "gang" mentality of parents banding together to sue the school. What gives? Just pull your kid out and put him in a private school! And frankly, what school administration wants to have to deal with "those parents"????

JMO! (Donning flame suit!)

The way I see it, these kids are athletes. They are usually widely known. So if they are about and about, flaunting their consumption of alcohol, then it can make the school look bad. I went to private school, so maybe it works differently.

Another thing that has me upset is the total lack of responsibility when it comes to the contracts. These kids need to learn that if they sign their name to something, it is serious.

Others have addressed the random drug testing reality. It is manadorty in many lines of works.

Actually anyone subject to DOT regulations can lose their job for non-work related traffic infractions. My husband has a CDL (commerical driver's license). He is very cautious about his driving. If he were to get too many points on his license, he could lose his CDL. Any points incurred in any state get noted on his license. Additionally, anytime he applies for a new position, he has to provide a current copy of his driving record. His clean driving record makes him extremely desirable to employers.
He has worked with people who were suspended for weeks because of a DUI off the job.

In Texas it is legal to drink as long as you are with a parent or guardian. I wonder what happens then? Do the parents claim they were at the party, just not in the picture? :lmao: Personally, I think this is something the parents should deal with.

It is legal in wisconsin too, but ONLY the child/parent/guardian. If it's a booze party and 25 kids were in attendance drinking, I think that goes against those guidelines. I assume it's similar in Texas.

Not to mention that if these kids were to compete in certain places/at a certain level, they would be drug tested themselves - at least that's what happens in the UK with athletics (once you're competing at national - or maybe even just county! - level, you are tested - UKA is very strict).

op here-just as a side note on the "outside" school theory.

the same school as in the op had an incident (that was not carried in the media) a few years ago. our neighbor is the high school principal and a group of the football players decided they would "raz" him by vandalizing his christmas display. they had shared with their friends that it was "the football players getting one over on the principal).

well they did'nt do very good research on which house was his and ended up vandalizing (to the tune of several hundred dollars) his next door neighbor's house. the players were seen doing it and identified by other neighbors (real smart crew-they wore their jersey's with their player numbers on them  ). the principal moved forward to taking school action (in addition to the resulting police action)-his reasoning it WAS school related-it was a portion of the "team" acting out against the principal. the offenders ended up suspended from a game or two and while there were parental complaints the suspensions were upheld cuz the players were representing themselves as the "football team" against "the principal" which was school motivated.

as far as the photoshop editing-there was investigation into the actual photos used to ensure their was no monkeying around. noone has claimed they are'nt in the photos doing the things they did-just that the contract they signed and agreed to uphold realy is'nt fair in the first place. i should also add that the school did'nt impose any academic suspensions and went to great care to keep the police uninvolved (there were adult parents identifyable in some of the photos drinking with the kids which is not only illegal in california it's prosecutable contributing to the delinquincy and child endangerment) it was an upset parent who went to the press and blew the thing wide open.

Not true THC only stays in your system for 12-36 hours & It depends on amount of use & some ones metabilsm. Cronic users longer.

I agree they signed a contract. Some schools contracts state what the time period is. During the school year or for just during the season of the plyaers sport or extra curr activity & if you do not want your employer to know what you do on your own time, then don't work for a company that drug tests.
