DH and I were watching the game between Northwest (Washington) and New England (Connecticut). It's a win or go home game for both of these teams. NW is ahead by 3 going into the bottom of the 6th. The NW coach has been doing a really great job of rotating his pitchers in and out, to keep a low pitch count which effect the number of off days they have to have before pitching again.

So at the start of the inning, they have one of their best pitching, but they need to limit him to just 20 pitches and he had already thrown a couple in the previous inning. He gets two outs for them and hits his 20th pitch after getting 1 strike on a batter.

Now this is where DH and I thought that the coach made one of his greatest coaching decisions. Faced with his team ahead by 3, home team has 2 on with 2 outs and a batter with 1 strike and he has to pull his pitcher or loss him for the next game.

He calls time out, gathers the infield players on the mound, while the 3 outfielders gather in center. You can see him muddling in his mind what to do. The boys, 11-13 year olds, are standing there, when you hear one of them say, put in Robbie. The coach looks out to the outfield, a couple of the boys look out there, and a couple are pointing out that way, too. Then he ASKS the boys, who should be put in. With zero hesitation, they all agree that Robbie should be put in. When the coach motions for Robbie to come in, the other boys are all smiles, a couple run out to meet Robbie as he is running in. It is a general good feeling moment.

After Robbie gets in and starts warm ups, ESPN puts on the screen, what was going on while they were origianlly showing the meeting on the mound. The left and right outfielder were standing there with Robbie. Robbie has his mitt up to his mouth, and you can tell he has that excitment tremble to his body - like his is silently saying please let me pitch over and over. And the other two are pointing to him, as though to say to the coach, pick Robbie. You know when the coach has motioned for him to come in. He drops the mitt from in front of his face and Robbie has got the biggest grin on his face.

There have been more than a few threads about youth sports and the over the top crazies - coaches and parents - that can go with it. And weither or not highly competative sports is a good thing or a bad thing. So, what a showing of how, even while being in the largest setting you can be in for Little Leage baseball, a coach still remebers that this is about the kids, and lets the kids make the decision of their fate. These kids, as competative as they are, knew if CT could score 3 runs and tie up the came or some how score 4 out right win, that their time at the world series was over. But the boys still wanted Robbie to come in and pitch. And while he wasn't a power pitcher, blowing pitches past the batter, he did his job. He got the batter to hit a grounder to the short stop go go the runner from 1st out at 2nd.

And Robbie, the kid his teammates voted to have go in and pitch - hasn't pitched once during the world series, nor did he pitch in the regional tournement that got them to the world series. Thats having a lot of faith in your teammate to get the job done.

WOW! What a great story. Wish I could say our travel team coach would have done the same. I just e-mailed this to him.. wonder what he's gonna say!!!??????

This is a great story, and exactly why my family and I love the LLWS. My in-laws are from that area and we make sure to plan a visit during the opening weekend every year.

I urge anyone who has kids, or anyone who loves baseball, to make the trip to South Williamsport, PA and see the LLWS. These kids are there because they love the game. It's great to see them enjoying themselves.

One of my highlights from the first weekend was the Canadian team. They lost a game to Taiwan 23-0. At one point, down by all of those runs, they made a brilliant defensive play on the field. Even though that very inning they gave up a bunch of runs, they celebrated that defensive play like they had just won the whole World Series. It's just so exciting to see kids not going "crazy" about the game, and enjoying the sport they love.

All of the games are free to attend, even the parking is free (if you don't pay the $5 to park in someone's yard), and the area is one of the most beautiful in Pennsylvania. As I said we go up on the first Friday, and usually stay through Monday. We do this because that first weekend usually features 4 to 5 games per day, whereas the Championship weekend only has a few games.

I think that I saw the Canadian kids play last night on ESPN or ESPN2.

Those kids were so happy. I recall that their defense was super, too.

The expressions on their faces are priceless.

Going to Williamsport is on our list of sport spots to hit. We've been to Cooperstown and plan on doing that again. We also want to get to both the college baseball and softball playoffs. While neither of our kids play any more, we still pop in on the league and catch games.

DS is pulling for Panama to win in the International pool. He was born there, while DH was stationed there, so with dual citizenship, he calls them his team.

I am leaving work a little early today so we can watch the game at 5:00 CDT today between Auburn, WA. and ......Pearland Little League, my hometown team. The excitement in Pearland is at a fever pitch as this is the first time we have had a team in Williamsport. My son played there and I was President and Sr. Vice President of the league for a number of years. There are numerous resturants around town having viewing parties for the games and the players Mothers are getting quite a reputation for their outfits they wear to each game.

They are one win away from the US Championship game and are looking pretty strong.

You also don't have to drive to Williamsport, PA to see a Little League World Series. Though Williamsport is the most well known, Little League actually has EIGHT separate World Series tournaments around the US. One each for the four age groups (Little, Junior, Senior, and Big), and one set each for boy's baseball and girl's softball. Our Community has the longest history of hosting a LL World Series outside of Williamsport, 30 years. We now host the Big League Softball World Series. I've been on the World Series Committee for 6 years now and have been a team coordinator (Latin America) for 5 years. This year I moved to the role of official photographer. A gallery of my work is now on Little League's web site here (action shots are mine).

You'll see a lot of the same types of good sportsmanship stories here too. One of my favorite memories is from 2004... Puerto Rico's (Latin America champs) final game in the Series was against the South region champions from Debary, FL. Debary was one of those cases where "they were winners for just being there" rang true. Debary is about 30 miles north of Orlando ...and the team was scheduled to fly to Michigan on August 14th. On August 13th, Hurricane Charles hit the area. Many of the Debary parents that drove to attend the series left home in advance of Charlie and had no clear idea of what they'd find when they returned home. The team was grounded on the 14th, missed the opening ceremonies, missed their pre-series field practice, and didn't finally arrive in Kalamazoo until after 1 AM on Monday... the day series play started.

By the time PR played Debary on Friday, both teams were mathematically eliminated from the championship game. PR's fate was sealed when they lost to the eventual champions 1-4 on Thursday and went to 4-3 in the series. The result was that PR vs. South was a pure "no pressure" game and was played mainly for fun. The girls still played hard, but laughed more, and cheered for one another. At the end of the game, a beautiful scene erupted. Both teams locked arms, sang, and circle danced together around the pitcher's mound. Some players were in tears. It was the end of the road for them in the Series.

I was able to see both of Pearland's first 2 games, in person, over the weekend, and I was very impressed.

I'm looking forward to seeing them go up against Georgia (who I think will also get to the US Championship game). I think Pearland has a few extra bats, though, and will get the job done. Although this Georgia team won the LLWS in 2006, and Georgia, as a state, has won 3 LLWS titles out of the 4 times they've been represented.

Good luck to your guys, though, and I really do think they can do it. Texas hasn't had a LLWS Champion since 1966!

I believe you should be facing Hatch as the starter. This is the kid that could only go 20 pitches, so as to be ready to go tonight. HOLY COW does the kid pitch. Was throwing the equavalant of a 90 mile an hour big league pitch. Played really well at short stop too.

Well Pearland is lucky in that regard as we have all our pitching avaialble tonight since no one went over 35 pitches on Monday. Mason van Nort is who will probably start has been the started for both of the first two games. He stayed at 35 pitches in both of those games and depending on if they score runs early tonight might only go 35 again. Pearland's key is hitting. If the bats stay hot they should have a good shot at winning. In two games they have scored 24 runs. Their catcher Jake Orlando is 6 for 6 in the series with a walk and batting 1.000.

I can hardly wait for tonight's game.

Our 10 year old team from Scott County KY just brought home the Cal Ripken LL World Series trophy from Ocala, FL. The town celebration was last night and it was an awesome experience for all involved. Our team had never gone outside the regional tournament, let alone a World Series.

As a resident of Auburn WA, where the Northwest team is from, it's a great feeling to hear the praise people are giving the team! Thanks from all of us in the area!
