Litter training a dog

hes about 5 months old. So far he will pee in the box but not poop. Is there any way to train him to? Theres awalys someone home to take him out but this is more for him (winter, snow). Hes a chinese pallion (I believe, hes my moms dog). TIA

You have to watch him and when you see him getting ready to poop, pick him up and put him in the litter box. Usually, they'll have to go after they eat. If you can't watch him, put him in his kennel as a dog won't soil his den unless he can't help it. So, if he's old enough to learn this, he'll learn it after you deposit him in the litter box a few times. And praise him when he's done and in the litter box.

I litter-trained a small dog once, so I know this does work.

How large is the box? If it is a cat litter box it might be too small for a dog. We have some friends that had their dog litter trained but they built a box in their basement that was probably 12'x12' for her. They had it in a separate room with a door and cut a dog door into the door so she could come and go as needed. Dogs need to sniff and wander for a bit before they go.

Is there a reason this animal can't go out to do his business?

I made the mistake of doing this with my min-pin. Litter didn't work (she was a digger), but I put a wee-wee pad in a box. If you train a dog to go indoors, there will be accidents. She was never fully housebroken, and I couldn't bring her to other homes.

the main reason is so if my mom dosent hear him durning the day he dosnt have an accident. the box is pretty big (since the cats are fat).

I tried litterbox training the dog in my siggy and he didn't like it. Puppy pads have worked MUCH better. He's probably 99% potty trained.
