Day 1
We thought travelling on Christmas Day would be special. Well it was certainly memorable.... for all the wrong reasons. The day started well enough. I had the troops rallied and out by 5.30am with DH complaining he could've squeezed another hour in bed. It was beyond eerie out on the motorway as there was absolutely nothing on the roads and I mean nothing at all for miles. We passed the time listening to a couple of new CD's the kids had gotten for Christmas (we had our Christmas Day on Christmas Eve) all was well until about 7.30am. We had just passed Oxford and I was replying to a early have a safe journey text from my mum when DH suddenly slows down and pulls over onto the hard shoulder.
I thought it was a wind up. There had been no noises, bangs, smoke or anything in fact the engine was running fine there was just no power when he pressed the accelerator. It was only when he began to scramble for the RAC number that I began to panic. It's everyone's worst nightmare, but actually we just sat very quiet nobody saying a word. After all as the car is on 8 months old and serviced regularly who do you blame (actually it was the turbo that had gone and I now blame DH for thrashing the car but that's another story entirely
) The RAC were excellent and once DH explained our dilemma said that rather than send an engineer they would cut straight to the chase and send a recovery truck to tow us to ensure we got there on time. As it was Christmas Day they said it would be ok to stay in the car with the engine running to stay warm. True to their word the truck turned up within half an hour to cheers of relief from us all and away we went again.
We arrived in good time at 9am. (DH will never complain about me getting him up early again) The recovery driver dropped us at the door to a few stares from fellow travellers. DH tipped the driver for his trouble and away we went to departures.
Departures was chaotic. We queued for an hour and a half. We would have probably been angry under normal circumstances but were just so happy to have made the flight we weren't bothered. We passed the time people watching. Eventually our turn came we were done in seconds our seats were the same as we had chosen online 34 D/E/F/G so we were happy and went off to grab some breakfast. It being Christmas most of the outlets were closed so we made do with juice and a hard bacon bagette. We then just had time to go to WH Smith where I got some reading material and a Christmas Classic Cadbury's Creme Egg for us all.
We boarded and were away in no time. The flight was pretty uneventful. The cabin crew seemed relatively festive with Christmas jewellery etc. Lunch was Turkey (not that impressive really it had some hot pickled cabbage thing going on which was not great) followed by a mince-pie type mousse (again not too inspiring) DS & I were impressed when they ran out of ice cream and got some from upper class (Ben & Jerry's). We passed the time watching Wallace & Grommit, reading a Beano Annual we had taken along for the trip & munching on Creme Eggs.
Immigration was fairly quiet for once so we cleared it relatively quickly and were soon on the monorail where we enjoyed our first real view of 'home'. Once in the car I tuned the radio to our favourite station (Magic 94.9) and enjoyed the familiar sights & sounds.
We arrived at the hotel at about 6pm to be met by a very festive receptionist. Well he was festive for about 5 minutes until he couldn't find our reservation. We showed him our voucher (he showed us his teeth) he tried to find fault with the voucher (naturally couldn't) then tried the third degree & various other tactics to get us to say it wasn't their fault then finally admitted defeat & said it was ok they could keep us until 29th then we would have to go as they were full. At this point I started wailing loudly and a rather more sympathetic female staff member took over. We tried to call Virgin to resolve (out of office till 8am) eventually she claimed to have found a room we could have for the duration of our holiday and gave us warm cookies and wished us a happy holiday.
Our roof was very nice. Recently renovated on the fifth floor with great views of the pool and a big lake area beyond. We unpacked relatively quickly and went off to find somewhere for dinner.
I thought it would be more difficult than it actually was to find somewhere open to eat on Christmas Day. As it was we managed to find a number of places open and settled for Bennigans on I.Drive where we all had burgers etc then it was off back to the hotel for an early night in preparation for our first day...... Epcot ...
