Sunday 24th December - Christmas Eve - MGM & Sci-Fi Dinner
Twas the night before Christmas & the weather forecast for today is again not great but a quick look out of the window shows all ok for the moment. Get up to loads of text from home about how everyone is doing their last minute stuff, braving the crowds & how cold & rainy it is while we spent yesterday on a beach getting very slightly tanned
When planning our itinerary there was never any question of where we wanted to be on Christmas Eve it had to be MGM with Fantasmic followed by the Osborne lights.
Park opening was at 8am so we expected it to be really busy. We arrived about 8.45 to find it very quiet indeed. As ever it was straight to RnR & ToT which had very short waits then we headed over to get a FP for Indiana Jones and then on to Lights Motors Action to catch the first show of the day. It overran a little so we had to run across to catch our Indiana Jones FP times from there it was over to The Magic of Animation where we saw clips from the new film for this year Meet the Robinson's (looks great) We had lunch at the Backlot of burgers & chicken strips then headed over to watch the parade followed by Muppet Vision & the Backlot Tour
We are just making our way to the stadium for the 6.30pm Fantasmic when it starts to rain so we stop off at the shops on sunset to shelter until it stops and buy sweets and drinks to eat during the show. Eventually it stops so we head into the stadium and get seated. While waiting we have another short shower but nothing drastic so we sit it out in our faithful yellow Mickey macs. All the time they have messages on a loop saying show may be postponed or cancelled due to weather. Anyway all is well its 6.30 the lights dim the crowd cheer ...... the heavens open! it is absolutely torrential and timed to perfection. In true Disney spirit the crowd all begin singing Im dreaming of a wet Christmas which wouldve been funny if it wasnt raining soooo much. After a minute or two an announcement goes out that the show is cancelled to much booing from the crowd. As a sort of consolation they play Drip drip drop little April showers and release the fireworks set up for the performance, slightly pacified the crowds leave still singing only this time its Jingle Bells (dont you love that Disney Magic if that happened at home thered be a riot)
We have a 7.30 ADR for Sci-Fi and decide to go there in the hope we can get in early or shelter at the very least. Its still torrential and even with our macs we still feel very cold & wet. Everyone else seems to have had the same idea so its a little crowded in the waiting area but at least we are out of the rain
We are told that as we booked by ADR we are entitled to a car but it may be quicker if we go for ordinary table. We decide to wait and it isnt long before we are seated. The setting is fabulous and you really do feel like you have dropped into a different age. The kids love it and soon forget grumbles about weather. I have to say though the setting was fabulous the food was at best average (having read up on the Disboards I expected as much). We shared a couple of appetisers of a bowl of chilli & some onion rings, DD & DH had steaks for mains which had been marinaded and neither liked the marinade much & I had a BBQ chicken sandwich which was ok. DS had tomato soup (very strange was very thick & strong tasting like Dolmio sauce) and a burger. For once we all had deserts ice cream for DS & DD while DH & I had apple cobbler or crumble (something along those lines I cant remember what they were calling it) We left with mixed feelings the setting is out of this world and we had a great time but not sure wed go again
(sorry not the best but all pics came out dark)
Anyway onwards and upwards we left to find the rain had stopped albeit leaving some hefty pools of water behind and headed off to see the lights only to find they had also been switched off as the rain had affected them too. A little deflated DH suggested we try to catch the later Fantasmic. We head across and get seated just a minute or two into the show so all is not completely lost. Then it was back to the hotel to put our stockings up for Santa
