Day 1 - Thursday 14th December
I was up early after not much sleep. This was mainly due to DD not coming in till 1am (even after being warned not to be late) as she had stayed back after work to spend some time with her workmates before she went away. We had to be up at 4.30 so as you can imagine I wasnt best pleased. She sauntered in as casual as you like after several stroppy texts from me threatening to leave without her. In the end I threatened to send my mother over to watch her for the three weeks we were away and strangely she was back within minutes
We were up showered and on our way to Manchester by 5.30. After last years breakdown on the way to the airport I dont think Ill ever feel comfortable until we are safely in departures. On arrival check-in looked very slow so the children and I joined the queue while DH parked the car. There werent many people in front of us but it took nearly an hour to get through. By this time we were starving so it was off for DHs traditional pre flight fry up (the kids & I had croissants & toast) and WH Smiths for books & magazines (got Peter Kay & Gordon Ramseys autobiographies)
The queue for security was massive mainly due to the liquids restrictions and only allowing 1 piece of hand luggage per person which included ladies handbags. I was shocked at how many unopened drinks bottles were confiscated which presumably had been bought at the airport shops pre-security. You would have thought there would be signs to tell people they cant take them through before they buy them. There was literally hundreds of them and it was only 8.00am. Somebody at Manchester is clearly on a nice little earner there.
Again it took the best part of an hour to get through so we were rapidly approaching boarding time. When we got through the boards said the flight was about half an hour late so we managed a very quick look at the shops before departing.
The on board flim selection was ok DD and I enjoyed The Devil wears Prada then I started my book. DS watched Barnyard. I took a few Christmassy chocolates for the kids to eat during the flight so after our turkey in flight dinner we enjoyed some orange Matchmakers and did some puzzle books.
I would say that the one main disadvantage of taking a flight near Christmas time is the vast number of children on board. We were near the back of the plane and our section of the cabin was rammed with the little dears, we also had Rab C Nesbitt and family (dad, mum, 2 girls with seats & one lap seated toddler boy) in the row behind who were an absolute delight. Dad sat with his earphones on all flight and had no interaction with the rest of his family whatsoever, mum was shattered trying to control unrully kids who kept either kicking our seats or hanging over them to see what we were doing & the toddler kept jumping up and trying to pull my DDs hair. They had bought nothing on the flight to occupy their children and when they were screaming with earache as the plane was landing were demanding the cabin crew provide sweets for their kids to suck on to help alleviate the pain. Everybody around them was staring they were just so noisy. The last time I saw them was going through immigration where dad had the toddler carrying a large bag of duty free rolling tobacco (classy!)
Immigration was really quick. As we have all just renewed our passports and are biometric we went through the fastpass queue. It was a dream in no time at all we were in our hire car (which became affectionately known as 'the sierra') had tuned the radio to Magic FM and were on our way.
It wouldnt be a traditional holiday if we didnt get lost and we did a little early this time ... on our way from the airport. The rain was absolutely torrential and it was difficult to see where we were going. DH took a wrong exit and well the rest is history. Suffice to say we enjoyed checking out everyones Christmas decorations as we drove along and along and along
Several hours later (only kidding) we arrived at the Fairfield LBV our home for the next 18 nights, did a quick unpack then it was off to Bennigans for our usual first night dinner Johns Bacon Burgers for DH, DD & Me and Hot Dog for DS. We stopped off at Wallgreens on the way back and picked up a bargain pink Barbie Christmas tree $5.19 with decs! and few drinks & nibbles for the fridge then shattered it was off to bed to see how long we would be able to sleep for.
