Hey disers.....I'm going to start off by saying that I'm far from a healthy person. I'm a diet a-holic surviving solely on slim fast bars and 100 calorie snack packs and I drink constantly (I work at a bar). Today I woke up and when I took a bite into one of the cookies given in a 100 calorie snack pack (for those of you who don't know this is hardly a hard thing to chew) and my back left molar disintegrated (***?!?). Okay so I know that liquor is really bad for you overall and over long periods of misuse, but I've only really been an avid drinker for about two years. Do you think this is the cause? I'm so freaked out about my drinking habits right now I'm dizzy. Any feedback????

It's probably not the liquor, but rather you other poor eating habits. Don't put yourself down too much, though. My son had his back molar crumble durnig a routine dentist vist--and he was only 8! So no liquor. He also doens't eat sweets, drink coke or have a bad diet :confused3 i toss it up to genes. His dad has poor enamel.

Anyway, go see a dentist today so you can get the tooth cleaned out and sealed. You don't want an infection in there :rolleyes1

The same thing happened to me when I was about 12. It was more annoying than anything to worry about, and I had to go through 2 separate procedures to get it capped and crowned.

Although, maybe this was a good wakeup call. While your diet and drinking habits might not be the cause, you should realize that it may have different consequences for the future, some you might not be able to feel/see as much as a molar... why not replace a snack pack with an apple, or drink some seltzer instead of alcohol once or twice a week? I know its hard, but start slow and I bet you will feel better about a lot of things in your life, including your teeth !

good luck, and make sure you buy lots of bananas and frozen yogurt to eat while your tooth heals :)

well I went to the dentist. Apparentely a cavity I had filled when I was younger had fallen out and the area got infected. I ended up having to have a root canal (I would not wish this on anyone) and have to go back next week to finish off the job and get a crown. With my fiancee's insurance (which is very good) it's still costing us $800. I guess that's what happens when you have the Manhattan inflated prices . Thanks for all of your advice....there's always disney pixie dust on here to make me feel better!

Sorry you had to have a root canal. I think $800 is pretty common. Most dental insurance will only pay half on big procedures like crowns and root canals. Take something for pain and no alcohol while you're healing(it slows your healing down and interferes with the immune system, something you don't want right now.) Good luck :thumbsup2

Even though it didn't cause your tooth problem, if you are really worried about your drinking habits, don't ya think you should at least cut down a bit?

Hmm, I also had a molar disintigrate, but it was because I had had a really bad dentist as a kid that gave me a root canal in like every molar when they first came in so when the filling fell out of one of them it was basically hollow and disintigrated really easily (also because of that crappy dentist I haven't been to a dentist in years so that might have something to do with it) I don't drink any more than average I would say though, so drinking isn't necissarily the problem for you.

drinking alcohol can't do anything, if anything it kills bacteria, plus most of my bros wouldn't have any teeth haha.

The purpose of those dentist visits you did not do every 6 to 9 months is to catch problems before the whole tooth crumbles.

The alcohol in liquor actually retards bacteria growth, but the other components of liquor which may include sugar and yeast feed bacteria.

Even if you substitute the liquor with fruit or fruit juice you should still rinse out your mouth after eating/drinking/meals.

Sorry about your tooth, but just wanted to remind you that it's kind of self-defeating to be dieting and drinking at the same time, since alcohol is so fattening! Good luck to you and hope your dentist does a good job! :goodvibes
