My son had major jaw surgery a few weeks ago, and will be on a smoothie/soft food diet.

Any advice is appreciated.

How will they handle this at a buffet?

Are there certain restaurants you'd recommend for the best smoothies, etc.?

Any other thoughts?

Your son could choose soft foods from the buffet...soup or pasta maybe, or you can choose them for him (how old is he)? I tend to doubt that the restaurant can provide pureed food.

I'd probably take a look at some menus and find places that offer smoothies, soup, mashed potatoes, etc. If he's eating anything at a buffet (or even just entering without eating) he will be charged full price.

true, at a buffet/fixed price restaurant there won't be any reduction in price based on what he can and cannot eat.

I agree he will still be charged full price at the buffets. Maybe notate your ADRs with dietary restrictions so that this can be discussed when you arrive. If they need to make him something soft that's not on the menu, they likely could accommodate that. Maybe not pureed, but they can likely find something suitable.

Seriously? No discount at buffets if he can only have a shake?

No. Mainly because most of the buffets are character meals so you're paying for the entertainment as much as you are the food.

Except that it's true even of buffets/fixed price that are not character meals. (like Boma or dinner at 'Ohana)

It's possible a CM could cut you a break and not charge you for him, but that's not the usual policy, which is no discounts based on the amount someone eats.

Two things:

No, no discount,

And, I just realized you are a "Wolf Dances..."! I adore your videos and was actually just thinking of them the other day when I heard a song on the radio that I know is in one of your videos! Will there be more videos with this next trip???

Seriously, evn if he is on a feeding tube.

I will say that if you ask for a chef you might have some unexpected help. A friend of mine was taken ill on a trip and after a visit tot he hospital was released with orders to keep a soft liquid puréed diet. Now we know that not every dish can be blended into a palatable soup, but the DIsney Chefs made it their mission to try. I was with them for a few meals, and while the meas were not what he had been looking for, he was really happy witht eh commitment the chefs had to trying to make something that tasted good and was nutritious.

I agree you will probably see some magic from the chefs but if I was him I just go for broke and have milkshakes, smoothies and "ensure" all week! He's on vacation. Oh, and I hope he's doing ok. I had that done 20 years ago and it was not a fun time.

Don't know what eateries you are planning for so I will only speak in generalities:

Poached or broiled white fish is a protein he can probably eat with ease. Rillettes and soft pate/mousse is something you'll find in several restaurants and even at some buffets. Unfortunately many buffets overcook salmon for his needs but you can always check the center cuts which is where the meat will tend to be more tender. If the fish is flaky it's probably overcooked and not something he can eat readily. Eggs cooked in certain ways such as poached or soft scrambled. Medium hamburger meat minus the bun. Cottage cheese, yougurt. You'll find some smoothie brands in the food courts/resort QS. Soups of course although he may have to strain out large pasta pieces or just avoid eating them. If he's a "shoveler" of food ( I had one of those) now is the time for him to eat slowly. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream or flan, brulee, pudding minus hard toppings like nuts. I'm sure most any TS restaurant would be willing to over cook vegetables so he can eat them and of course there is mashed potatoes instead of french fries.

HTH

You might want to post on the DISabilities forum. I believe that restaurants can puree food (from their kitchen - you cannot bring food for them to puree), but people on the DISabilities forum will have experience (I think that there was actually a recent thread about it).

I once didn’t get charged for my husband at Tusker House. He had a bit of an upset stomach, so he chose not to eat. The waitress brought him a ginger ale without him asking for it and she didn’t charge for him. I guess I didn’t realize this wasn’t the norm!

@CVW I just saw the video. ITS AMAZING! Truly! :lovestruc

As stated, I believe some restaurants can puree your food. You'd obviously need to note it beforehand on your ADR and speak to the chef when you arrive. Being on a liquid diet due to surgery sure is hard. Good luck to you. I hope he/she makes a quick recovery.

Aren't the videos awesome? They put me in such a happy mood - I remember them about 1x a year and I watch them all and they just make me giddy!

Yes, they're fantastic. Such talent! I absolutely love watching them. :) I'd love to put something like this together but lately my trips have been solo. A video of one is no fun.
