a little tear came to my eye when i saw it nominated for best animated picture YESSSSSSSSSSS. good thing for TP for bieng nominated and im so dying to see spirited away.

this has to be a good morning for disney animation.

i saw ice age and think and thought it was funny but think LILO and stitch can bring home the little guy.

So, do you think Disney lost some $$$ by releasing L&S to Video last year before the Academy Awards?

With today's nomination, it could have been re-released and if it wins........

Just wondering.....

i thought i had read somewhere that they really didnt think LILO was going to be anything special and actually kept cutting its budget...probably to put more into TP i forgot the specifics......Disney was probably surprised witht he announcement of LILO nominated.

I really did have a tear..i love that furry guy

Exactly how many major animated motion pictures DIDN'T get nominated? Treasure Planet was nominated too, to indicate how low the bar is.

What's the number if we eliminate those should-have-been direct to video numbers that stopped for a cup of coffee in the movie theatres Disney has foisted on an ever skeptical public? For the sake of argument I'll exclude Treasure Planet.

I actually enjoyed L&S (Disney formulaic though it may have been), but am suggesting a nomination in this category, even at 20, is not a particularly noteworthy achievement.

BTW, what movie do you think should/will win?

Dan

I haven't seen spirited away.

I would love to see Lilo and Stitch win, I really love that movie.

Ice age wasn't that good. IMHO.

Treasure Planet should win if it was really based upon what the best animated movie is; but then I haven't seen spriited away. So again IMHO.

FYI, there were 17 animated movies submitted and accepted for the best animated feature award (I would bet that scoop is right on that there were 20 films that met the criteria, this is the list only of those that were submitted and accepted; for example, I think that Scoobey Doo qualified under the criteria that an animated character appeared in X minutes of film, but WB didn't submit it):

"Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights"
"Alibaba and the Forty Thieves"
"Eden"
"El Bosque Animado ( The Living Forest )"
"Hey Arnold! The Movie"
"Ice Age"
"Jonah - A VeggieTales Movie"
"Lilo and Stitch"
"Mutant Aliens"
"The Powerpuff Girls Movie"
"The Princess and the Pea"
"Return to Neverland"
"Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron"
"Spirited Away"
"Stuart Little 2"
"Treasure Planet"
"The Wild Thornberrys Movie"

Eight Crazy Nights? Wild Thornberrys 2? What makes you think L&S WON'T win?

I wonder how much 'personalities' enter into the voting? Will the voters be against Lilo and Stitch or Treasure Planet just because they don't like Disney/The Big ME?

Will 'Spirit' be viewed as more artistic/dramatic?

I'd also like to chime in on Treasure Planet - I saw it on a giant IMAX screen and it was fantastic.

I'd love to hear AV's take on this. I personally feel like Ice Age will take it.

If i had a vote(and i should!!!) i would vote for Ice age over all of the other potential winners. Treasure Planet was added only because it has a disney name behind it, other wise it wouldnt have garnered a chance to win. L & S was ok but i thought Ice Age a better overall movie.

One of the reasons it took so long to get a ‘Best Animated Feature” category was that many people feared it would the “Walt Disney” company award. It was the same fear that drove the academy to continually threaten to remove the “Best Animated Short” category in the years back when Disney made short films. Now that others have stepped up (especially computer animation), I think most of this sentiment has faded.

Odds on bets for the long time have been for ‘Spirited Away’ to win.

I have to concur with scoop and several others that L&S will win in what, commercially at least, was a week year for animated features, though concede I haven't seen Spirited Away.

I preferred Spirit myself.

It might have been a weak year but L&S wasn't a weak film. If this had been a better year for animation overall L&S holds it's own in being original and definatly bold. A fun fun movie.

theres nothing to calm down about im excited for it. Theres weak movies surrounding every category.

ahhh the spice of life

We saw the first two(!) hours of Spirited Away on the Disney Cruise, special preview night. The film broke with 15 minutes to go, and even my DD has never mentioned wanting to see the end of the movie. Typical Japanese animation, very artistic, very slow moving. Might win, but we thought it was...boring. Diana

Opinions are like what?

L & S wins going away and though the storyline was "predictable Disney" isn't that what a G rated animated film for the whole family is supposed to be about? For those who didn't find Stitch lovable enough, he is still my kids stuffed of choice.

IMO, TP was the best of the year, though. It's just too bad little boy moves don't command the family attention like little girl movies... This was a beautiful film. The story is (obviously) classic, Jim Hawkins was likeable the original song by that Goo Goo guy was great (there should have been a couple more) and it was exciting. The only letdown (IMO) was BEN. There just wasn't enough there.

Spirit & Ice Age were direct to video quality. My kids both disliked Spirit my youngest thought Ice Age was good...About like she thought Reurn to Neverland was good.

I agree completely with this statement. My son liked Spirit, Ice Age and Lilo equally while my favorite was Spirit but my opinion is just that. It'll be interesting to see who wins this one.

I would say that L&S was an excellent Disney film. It was totally in line with classic Disney tastes. I do not think that it will win though. I hope that they don't just pick the movie based on entertainment value alone.

If they use artistic nature, entertainment, story line and animation I think that TP or Spirited Away will win. TP is definitely the best movie in the story line category. Entertainment would have to go to Ice Age I think. Spirited Away would win for best animation but I think TP was close enough to the top in all categories to win. L&S might sneek in there though because of the water color animation and the original story. It will be a Disney movie that wins this year. That is certain.

Actually no, grinningghost. But we are rare and I'm really very glad about that.
