I was watching a YouTube video last night and they indicated that when you use a LL for Indy it doesn't help you very much unless the standby line is over 40 minutes because most of the que is inside after the merge point. This would completely change my touring plan; is it true?

Yes, the LL only helps you avoid the outside portion of the queue. The merge point is before you enter the building.

Most of Indy's indoor queue is not really used as a queue. It is just a means to walk underground to the attraction. You'll walk straight through to the movie room before slowing down.

The nice thing is that you can doublecheck the standby line before using your LL. Just walk past the LL area and have a glance. If the outdoor standby queue is slammed then go use the LL. If the outdoor queue is sparse then hop in that and reschedule the LL for later or another ride. Just be sure to do that before entering the building. Service is very tough once in the building.

I’ve had a couple backups in the movie room as recently as October 2024, but we were in there for a very short time… two to three cycles of the film, so maybe 5 minutes or less?

The merge point is way after you enter the temple.

The Indiana Jones Adventure Lightning Lane merge point is typically located just before the final loading station where the dedicated Lightning Lane queue joins the regular standby line, allowing those with Lightning Lane passes to board the ride with minimal wait time compared to the standard queue. - AI response. . . . .

It is a generic statement about LL with the word "typically" added so that it can apply to any ride.

In the case of Indy at Disneyland, the merge point is when you walk inside the building (where they used to hand out the hieroglyphic cards).

AI is not always correct and is wrong in this case. The merge point is at the entrance to the temple. There is no way to merge at the loading station.

I don't know about you, but I like to avoid that outside queue so if I can grab a LL to Indiana Jones I use it. I understand where the mix point is but sometimes the outside queue gets long and the LL queue gets long, so it's a savings.

I think I would agree with the assessment of Lighting Lane only being truly helpful at a busy time. However, Indiana Jones Adventure is so popular that the line is often over forty minutes, so you probably will end up using it if you follow the guidelines you wrote about in your question.
I think where it has more potential to mess with your plans is with unexpected closures. This ride is kind of notorious for breakdowns, so you might get stuck in line whether you use Lighting Lane or not. On the other hand, if you book a Lighting Lane, you might end up with a Multiple Experiences Pass during one of those closures, which is nice.

When there is a significant outside queue LL is definitely worth it. But if you enjoy the attraction and want to ride it multiple times in one day it is good to know when you should use the LL and when you should just get in line. Since you can modify it to a later time, do that when the queue is short and you only save 5-10 minutes vs when the line is an hour long and you are saving 45 minutes.

Yep, I was wrong.
I can admit it.
I just watched a video.
I thought we walked down a separate hallway.
Man it is tough getting old!
