Lice outbreak closes school

One of our local schools is closed today due to a lice outbreak. Has anyone ever heard of lice being so bad that they actually closed the schools? I can't believe it. Funny thing is teh middle school is right next door where half of the siblings go and they are still open. I just hope it doesn't spread there.

I have never heard of this, but it makes sense if the outbreak is widespread. It forces parents to stay home (in most cases) and gives them an opportunity to treat the kids, their bedding, homes, etc.

I've never heard of a school closing, but when it hit my daughter's school, it lasted from October-April and was limited to one class -- hers! Yuck. She did get it in the beginning, but I was like a fanatic and made sure it didn't come back.

We got the letter last week but it hasn't shut the school down, thankfully. I've been checking my kids' heads like crazy ever since. So far so good.

They are but I didn't think that lice could live too long off of humans.

Lice can live up to two weeks off a human....... (which is why you have to bag up stuffed animals and things that can't be put in a dryer.

One town i used to live in had all three school levels closed for 5 days once because of lice. (Luckily my DD wasn't old enought to go to school then; but she did get it from one family in Kindergarten the next year and it was medicinal resistant too. (The other parent knew this but still sent her kids to school and after-school program each day.)

Wow! That sounds like quite the epidemic!

Kudos to the school for doing what it takes to get rid of the boogers. They are such a pain!
