I need a new mattress. I've had the same mattress for too long. I know nothing about them since the one I own right now was the one I had right out of college.

So, help me out.

Where do I buy? What do I look for? Are there any brands I should not buy?

TIA!

We love the mattress we got at BJ's wholesale club. I tried to research mattress brands, but they make it really difficult-- same mattress has different names in different stores, etc. Anyway, we spent 600 for a King size mattress, which was FAR below other prices for comparable mattresses I researched. It is super comfy so far, but we have only had it for 6 months. Good luck!

Look into the Original Mattress Factory. They are one of the only (if not THE only) company still making double sided mattresses. In other words, they will literally last twice as long. Even Stearns & Foster has made the switch. Everything is done right there in the factory and you can customize however you want. Our queen set, that was top of the line (minus pillow top) was just over 600, which was about half of what I priced elsewhere.

Lay on it. And not just for a minute or two....for as long as you need to REALLY see how comfortable it is.

If you sleep with a partner, make sure they are WITH you when shopping so you can both lay on it together. Move together...move separately. See how much 'shake' there is when the other one moves.

Lay on your back; lay on your side. Gauge how comfortable it is.

DON'T let price be the first consideration. A good mattress will not be cheap, and in the end is worth every penny when you consider you spend 1/3 of your day laying in it.

Make sure the store you are buying from has a sleep guarantee, which will give you at least a week (but 30 days is even better) to 'test' the set, and return for full credit for a different set.

12 years ago, my DH and I spent $1,000 on a new king set. It is as comfortable today as it was the day they delivered it; that's less than $100 per year for a good night's sleep so far.

We just ordered a Tempurpedic today. We tried it out in the stores a couple of times. We received rave reviews from friends and neighbors. DH and I have completely different firmness preferences. We are going to take advantage of the three month trial period. I am very excited about receiving it next week. We tried several others in the store. Too firm or waaaayyyy too squishy. It's one heck of a decision! I bid you good luck in your search. When you shop, go in comfy clothes, have the salesperson give you a pillow and really hang out on the beds. Get in YOUR regular sleep position and stay there to see how it feels. Don't let them rush you. Whether you pay $600 or $4000 it's a big investment no matter how you look at it, and one that affects your day in and day out performance during the day. I thought our salesman had a good saying when he told us "to take our time, we weren't buying a bed, we were buying sleep." Again, good luck.

Thanks for the responses! Sounds like it is going to a long shopping day and I had better get a babysitter! Great idea on purchasing one that maybe has a test / trial period. I'd hate to spend all that money and end up wanting my old mattress back.

Wish me luck! Maybe we'll try to go Memorial Day weekend and hit some sales.

You should check out QVC. They have the sleep :) number beds featured this weekend. They are suppose to be fabulous! As soon as I can find the extra $ that's the place and one I am headed for! I think it's on an easy payment plan this weeend too!

A little over a year ago, we purchased the Serta Perfect Day New Beginning queen set, around $1,000. We LOVE it. The top memory foam has a cooling agent for people who are hot natured.

We bought a mattress for my daughter in BJ's. They are Bassett if I recall correctly. The same mattress we bought for $299 (several years ago) was selling at Levitz (which has since gone out of business) for $799. I believe they now sell here for $399 but even that is a bargain. She has had it for about 3 years now and it is still really comfortable.

We have the TempuPedic and love it! Money well spent, you can't feel it move if someone else sits down hard on the other side of the bed and it's great because it's not too hard and not too soft. We had the Select Comfort before and I really didn't like it at all!

I second this. A good mattress is worth it's weight in gold, seriously.
go and try them out. go to different furniture stores and lay on them etc., some of them are really great and helpful..

good luck!!

Neither one of these in Illinois. :sad2:

Chicago suburbs? My vote is for Verlo! The thing I like best is that it is not like walking into a used car dealership. They'll tell you the price on every mattress, and they apply absolutely no pressure at all. Every other mattress store I've been to has been very high pressure, condescending attitude, slick talking, etc.

I'll never go anywhere else again.

I highly recommend the bedding from the W Hotel. We bought a pillowtop mattress set from there over one year ago when they had a 40% off coupon. My DH and I are still sleeping comfortably, although he would like it a bit softer. It is unbelievably comfortable and still holding up. Good value for the money. They brought it, set it up, and disposed of our old mattress.

How do you try out a mattress at BJ's? They are always stacked up and wrapped in plastic at the BJ's near us. We did get a twin mattress there but it was for an extra bed for sleepovers so we weren't too concerned about it. It's actually a great mattress but I hesitate when it comes to one that would be used daily.

yes, this is my question also. They have some sleep number-types on Sam's Club website, but you can't try them out!

That's my whole issue too. I don't want to order online without trying out a mattress. I belong to Sams club, but I want to be able to test out the mattress before buying. I think we'll hit a few stores over the weekend and hope they have some good Memorial Day sales going on. I'm going to bring my pillow with me! :lmao:

Thank you all for the suggestions!

Thanks! I'll check them out. I don't even think I've ever heard of Verlo???

If you have a Big Lots near you they carry name brand mattresses that are reasonable.
