I know along the way I've read posts about how to nip colds in the bud before they get the better of you - but for the life of me I can't remember what any of those remedies are!!!

My DS is 3 - do they make a children's version of Zicam? :-)

Let me hear it, DISers!!! Help me stop this bug in its tracks!!!

I don't know if there is a children's version of ColdEase, but I used it for the first time this weekend and I'm sold. Not sure if a 3 year old would be able to suck on a zinc tablet every waking hour for a few days though.

Definitely, lots of liquids will help.

They do make a children's version of Ziacam... I know my DD2 is too young for it but it may be ages 3 and up... I just can't remember. I would love to hear some ideas also... we are leaving this weekend and DD2 has a nasty cold... I have already started myself on the Zicam and it seems to be keeping my cold at bay... I have only had very mild symptoms so far!

I am pretty sure that the children's zicam is age 3 and up. You can also get Hylands C plus Cold homeopathic tablets that are fine for his age. Those work very well for my dds

We do vitamin C and Zicam at the beginings of a cold. Are you sure it is a cold and not allergies? Right now is the time of year when my kids allergies are full blast b/c we have had lots of rain, corn is ready, and leaves are falling.

I don't know if there is anything to this or not, but my middle child (who is 4) hardly ever gets sick and when he does catch whatever is going around, he is usually not sick for more than 8-10 hours. He will sometimes even get a fever for 2 hours and then he is all better. I've never seen anything like it.

The only thing that we can think of that is different about his diet than my other two kids is that he LOVES yoplait yogurt. He probably eats 4 or 5 a day. And, I have noticed that when he is fighting some kind of bug, that is all he will eat. It is almost like his body is craving it. Like I said, I have no proof of this working, but it might be worth a try if you can get your little one to eat a ton of yogurt like mine does!

Once you can put (apostrophe) "S cold" after somebody's name, it is impossible for him/her shake it off or nip it in the bud or whatever. No matter how many lozenges s/he sucks on or how many cans of chicken soup s/he consumes s/he will be contagious for just as long.

I would recommend against soft drinks, they "burn" the throat allowing the same or additional cold germs to get a new footing and prolong the cold.

When I was little my mother upon hearing me sniffle for the first time (per cold) told me to go to bed early to "sleep it off". My batting average for sleeping off a cold, all the way to this date, is 0.0000 .

many fluids. much sleep. making the child rest and/or sleep as much as possible helps so much!

DD's and I have had a cold all week! We are leaving tomorrow and we are still snot nosed.

Try Airborne. They make a kids Airborne too or you can do 1/2 of an adult tablet. You dissolve the tablet in water...all natural...etc. I have used this many, many times at the first sign of a cold and it has only not worked once. Good luck!

My best defence is lots of rest. Let them take that first day of cold off school or day care and do NOTHING but lie on the couch and watch TV and drink lots of fluids. IT seems to really shorten the cold. I also up the Vit. C and puch then OJ.

This is my new big find: Hydrogen Peroxide in the ears. I have no idea why it works, but it has warded off colds in me, DH, and DS. I use a medicine dropper to "fill-up" DS ear, and let it sit for about 5 minutes in each ear.

Well in my experience you can treat a cold with medication and it will last approximately 7 days. However, if you don't treat it with anything at all it will probably last a week!

By the way if any of us truly had a cure for the cold, we wouldn't be wasting our time of the disboard. We would probably own Disney! :thumbsup2

As others have said, try to get him to rest as much as possible. Give him TONs of liquids. My daughter recently had the flu and loved Pediacare. I say give him whatever fluids he likes and lots of them. The more he likes it, the more he'll drink. Try to open windows and air out your house (this will help get rid of the germs and ensure no one else gets sick!). If he's coughing and thus having trouble sleeping, use a humidifier or one of those new plug-ins that emit the Vick's-type stuff. Give him LOTS of chicken soup if he'll eat it. My mom always used to say "feed a cold, starve a fever", so try to get him to eat as much as he'll eat.

Good luck to you. I hope he feels better soon.
