Will they let me into the U.S. if I have left than 6 months validity left on my Canadian passport? I'm flying out of Pearson to MCO next month but my passport expires in January 2009. Can I still get into the U.S. if I have left than 6 months validity left on my Canadian passport?

Talk to your travel agent or review the information on the Passport Canada website. A passport actually allows you back into your country, not out of the country contrary to popular belief.

You can go to and return to the US up to the date of expiry on a Canadian passport.

other countries and other passports, maybe not.

It's probably worth it to get the renewal done now though..

it can be done in a weeks time.

Technically - you are supposed to have 6 months remaining on the Passport. Don't get me started on how I feel about paying the 5 year price and getting a 4.5 year Passport! I just had to renew mine that expire(s) in Dec because I travelled in Sept! At least humour me and add the unused portion to the new Passport!!!!

This is not accurate. A passport verifies the citizenship of the owner. Many countries require travellers to have passports for entry into their country (the USA being one, for most travellers, including Canadians traveling by air) to verify the travellers citizenship.

This isn't wholly accurate. We can't accurately discuss the entry requirements of each of the world's countries, in one or two sentences.

Some countries require travellers entering their country to have a specified number of months remaining on their passport (sometimes 4 to 6 months). The number of months required is somewhat tied to the number of months the traveller is allowed to be in that country.

The USA only requires Canadians, travelling via air, to have a valid passport on the date of travel (and the expected time the travellers will be in the USA). If your travel plans call for a one week stay, your passport will only need to be valid for one week, minimum. The only exception is for people travelling to the USA who require a visa (ie those going for work purposes). If you need a visa to enter the USA your passport must be valid for 6 months from the data of entry.

Before anyone gets upset at the Canadian gov't on some countries only accepting a passport for 4.5 year, for a 5 year passport -- it's the country of travel making the rule, not Canada.

The answer is : here

"Citizens of the countries listed below are exempt the six-month rule and need only have a passport valid for their intended period of stay." 6 month rule is not required for the Canadians only a valid passport.
