Ok when it comes to lenses, say I have a canon camera, Can I use lenses by vivtar, kiron, sigma, tiffen, albinar, and other off brand lenses? Im just wondering.

Yes, as long as they specify that they have a canon mount.

It should be in the description, something like: Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 Canon Mount.

Ok thanks. Im at a loss as to what lenses I even need right now. I bought a book that talks about lenses but havent quite gotten to reading it yet.

Here's an example of the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens. Sigma makes this lens for Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Pentax, etc. Here's the link to a search on B&H Photo's Web site, and you'll see how to distinguish which Sigma lens to get for which camera: link

In your case, you'll click on the Sigma lens that specifically says "for Canon Digital SLR Cameras", here's the link.

Hope that helps, and congratulations on being able to afford a DSLR! :) Now you get to start all over again and decide which DSLR camera's the best for you! :)

I know, its heck! I had a hard enough time deciding on a canon s3, I have NO clue what camera to get. I know its either going to be canon or nikon just cause those are two brands that fit nice in my hands. I like the rebel but it dosnet fit so nice. Is fit of really huge importance? Do you have any suggestions of a good camera for a small handed person? I have a kodak easyshare C180 (i think) right now.

If you're looking at the Canon T1i, you might be able to wait a few months, cuz Canon just announced the Canon T2i last week...so it should be available in the next few months.

I think that "fit" is actually pretty important. It's like finding a pair of shoes with a good "fit". If you're uncomfortable with the fit now, I'm not sure things'll get better later on.

Of course, I'm not sure you'll find a DSLR with a similar "fit" or size of your current Kodak Easyshare camera:

Good luck! :)

FWIW, I was originally between Canon and Nikon until I held them and really liked the Nikon (D50 at that time). Then I held the Pentax and it was all over! It is difficult to find a Pentax to actually hold anymore, but you really should try to find a Pentax K-x to hold. It has a similar feel to Nikon to me and the K-x is still the best bang for the buck right now in an entry level DSLR. (Plus there are four color choices!) Once the T2i comes out and the T1i price lowers, they will probably share the title b/c I feel that the T1i is just about equal in entry level features to the K-x. The difference is that the K-x is currently enough cheaper to give it the edge.

I actully was sold last night on buying a pentex cause my local goodwill was selling a film one with two treaded lenses for $24. The lenses were threaded ones (which I heard means I could have used them with a digital) but alas I didnt bu it on first site and gRRRR it was gone by this am:( so i thought i would consider other options too. I guess one reason i like the pentax is it RED!! I mean how cool is that!

Whats the best site to buy a used camera? Ive been looking on amazon.

I have the red one!!! There are three or four of the red ones here on our board now. Pretty much any old Pentax lens will work on a new DSLR. The screw mount ones require an adapter, but it is inexpensive, so not a big deal. Since those are completely manual lenses, it goes without saying that they are still completely manual on a DSLR.

So wait... IF I get a DSLR I can get old film lenses and a adaptor and it will work? Dang, this makes a DSLR so much more affordable (and gives me a new reason to go to the car show swap meet)

When I found out what I was getting back I danced around the H&R block office (and my tax lady LAUGHED) before suggesting a canon rebel.

Only the old screw mount ones need an adapter.

There are tons and tons of old lenses from the film days that will work just like normal on a DSLR. This goes for most brands, but some brands changed their mounts so not all of the old ones will work. All old Pentax ones will work though because they are still using the same mount (Pentax K mount).
