i have a cheap phoenix macro ( 100mm) that last i knew was working...i've been meaning to try it with my tamron 1.4 converter and did that sunday...long and short the auto focus wouldn't work but using manual was ok...so it worked, i just had to manual focus...then monday i wanted to try it with the 1:1 filter ( it's 1:2 without) and the converter...it wouldn't work at all, not even when i tried to manual focus it. i know the 1:1 is very picky about how far you are from the object but i was careful to be a ft away(where it usually works ) then i tried it without the converter and it wouldn't work that way either...it is just a total blur, even when using manual focus, like it was out of focus which of course it was but it never went in focus....so what in the lens would make it not focus in manual? it has been making a loud noise when focusing but since i wasn't using auto focus it didn't make that noise..so would it not be able to focus even in manual if the contact points were dirty or something?...sunday the exposure etc was fine, everything looked good as long as i manually focused. monday the lens wouldn't work at all...any ideas?

Jann, did you try moving the camera closer and farther until the subject came into focus? Once you get it near to correct, then you'll know how far it has to be at that focal length. I had to do this with the extension tubes to even figure out if I was too close or to far away.

Do you hear parts rattle around when you shake it?

no rattle. i've used this lens for a few yrs and it stinks at focusing in general so i am used to doing the focus dance but this was different( wouldn't focus for striaght non macro 100mm either and would sunday) tried it again to day, no converter, it wouldn't focus at all at first then suddenly it focused...(manual, hadn't moved the camera .first it was blurry no matter how much i turned the manual focus then suddenly it worked..)maybe the manual focus isn't working/slipping somehow.. i hadn't used it for a while but it seems like the manual focus is a lot tighter/harder to turn than it used to be..it was making a grinding noise last yr+ and i sent it in to get fixed..but i think the warrenty is over and for a $99 lens probably not worth the shipping etc to get it looked at..the lens is a pain in the neck anyway with the filter but i have a couple things i want to get before i get the canon macro so i was hoping it would last at least through the summer when i take most of my macro shots due to flowers etc...oh well, this will be the summer of long distance flowers :rotfl:

Nah, just get out those extension tubes like you said in the other thread. Use the smallest one on your 70-200 at first and see how that works. Then try them on the other lenses and see how they work as well. It is fun to experiment with them.

first i need to find them, hmmm, now where in this mess could they be?:rotfl2:
while searching the other day, i did find a step up ring for my 50mm lens that i never even knew i had..the size says it is right but it's to big(?????) so i still had to hold the cp with one hand and push the shutter with the other... so won't be using that without the tripod:rolleyes1 and also found a lens cap to replace the one for my teleconverter( lost that cap monday) this week has not been the best week for my equipment :0

Hey! Do you live in my house somewhere? It sounds awful familiar to me trying to find my stuff around here. :rotfl:
