Yes, I'm one of those people that has a dslr, but doesn't really know what to do with it. But, I'm trying. Anyways, I wondered what the purpose of those hoods that you put on your lenses are for??

They help to prevent things from coming in contact with your lens and possibly damaging it and it provides some shade from the sun.

They are for blocking potential glare from other light sources like the sun. They also offer a very small amount of protection for the front of your lens.

it makes your impressive lens look even more impressive lol...
:thumbsup2

as others have mentioned its to help with sun glare and offer some lens protection especially if you are walking through a crowd, although it wont help if you are shooting directly into the sun lol

You know when the sun is high in the sky, just a bit forward of you, and you're trying to see into the distance, and there's that annoying glare coming from the sun - so you instinctively put your hand up to your brow to block out the sun and it helps you see much more clearly? Or shooting at night, when looking at a scene, and just off to the left is this hugely annoying floodlight on a roof, causing the most miserable glare, and you put your hand up to block it out so you can see better? That's what a lens hood is doing for your lens!

I have a hood for every single one of my lenses (only five so far) and I use them each time I shoot. Indoors or out. It has saved my front glass from being scratched or damaged so many times.

And on more than one occasion I have had people watch me shoot. Then look at their camera. Then look back at mine. And then say "Oh, you mean you are supposed to screw it on so it sticks out?!?! I guess that does make more sense." After that second time, I've started watching out for it and I do see a lot of people with their hood on backwards. And I'm sure most of them aren't doing it on purpose.

You're right, they aren't. They just don't know what it is or why it's there. I guess we all have something we don't know. It just seems like it would be hard to use the lens with it on backwards.
