Lego store gift cards

Can Lego gift cards purchased in Canada be used in US Lego stores?? On the back of the card it says the gift cards can be used in all North American Lego stores...My DS has been saving up his gift cards for years. It would be so awesome if they do take them (especially given the current crappy exchange rate right now!).

I'm afraid not. They can only be used in the country that they were purchased
