Leftover Snacks

We just returned from WDW and at the end of our stay found ourselves to be left with some extra cans of pop, unopened crackers, beer, etc.

This has happened in the past and we thought it would be nice if we could pass this on to someone who is just beginning their stay.

But, we were not sure how to handle it...any suggestions?

Of course, we would only pass on the unopened items.

We always hunt down the maid or frankly anyone from housekeeping the morning we are checking out and personally hand them our unopened food/snacks/drinks.

We let them know what time we are vacating the unit also so they know when to come back. They always appreciate the food as well as the info.

I also hate to see good food go to waste. I find that it is better to personally give things aways than to leave things behind. I don't know if housekeeping is allowed to keep things not gven to them or if they have to throw it away. Also, as a guest, I would be leary of eating stuff left behind my someone I never met even if it was unopened. Maybe that's just me though.

Another idea is to give your stuff away to another guest the night before (if you know you won't be eating it in the morning) if you see someone checking in or by even just asking other guests that you meet in the walkways or hallways if they want it.

We gave our left over, unopened stuff to the bell hop that took out our luggage. He was thrilled because there was over a 6 pack of beer left! :D

It has been my understanding from management CMs at OKW that the housekeeping staff can accept any unopened food, drink, etc. We like to find a housekeeper & let her know that the items in the refrigerator &/or on the counter are for her to take. They are usually genuinely greatful!

We have been told by the front desk that housekeeping can not accept any food or drinks, so we give them to a family near our villa.

We have always left them in our unit and hope that housekeeping uses them..I'll make sure I ask them next time...

I asked Guest Services at VWL in March about leaving food etc. for Housekeeping and I was told that they were definitely allowed to take it. I just wanted to know since I hated to leave it and have Housekeeping have to throw it away and I also hated for it to go to waste. So, it appears there is not a consistent answer from Guest Services on this.

I guess speaking with a specific Housekeeping employee would be best as long as you can find one.

On our last trip to OKW the previous guest left a 6-pack off beer in the fridge. I only wish I knew who it was so I could thank them.

:earsboy: :earsgirl:

We always leave unopened sodas, snacks, etc. for housekeeping. Generally, I just leave a note indicating that the items are for them to keep.

We also just leave our unopened things in the kitchen. We hope that someone, either the housekeepers or the next guest can enjoy them.

At the last BWV annual meeting, someone asked about donating any leftover unopened, non-perishable food items to some type of food bank. TPTB said that, for legal reasons, WDW couldn't be involved with this. They do give quite a bit of food to the local food banks themselves, but they couldn't take in food from a third party (DVC members) to pass on to a food bank. We'd sure like to find a food bank donation area between WDW and the airport.

Short of that, I guess giving the food to a housekeeping/bell services CM is the next best thing.

At Vero last summer the housekeeping staff was swarming our cottage just waiting until we left. We figured maybe it was first come first serve! It didn't bother us- we were glad they could use it. We just returned from the Caymans and it was the same except the housekeeper there wanted to come in and start changing the bed linens before we even left!!! She said she'd just go on and start in the back bedroom.

We always left our unopened "food" or "beverage" in the refridgerator assuming when room service was going to clean the room for the next reservation: they would take our "leftovers" when they "cleaned" the room and refridgerator.

I hoped they at least "wiped down" the inside of the refridgerator and saw the "leftovers" before I started my vacation.

Thanks everyone for your replies...we were told the housekeeping staff could not take our leftovers and that anything left in the rooms was thrown out.

We have given it to our bell guy and this seemed to work out okay. I guess next time were at BWV we'll try to find someone the day before we check out and see if they would like it.

We have usually left it for housekeeping too, but have also personnaly handed items to those guests just arriving.

Maybe the leftovers are why housekeeping keeps calling in the mornings at some of the resorts!!:D

I have a feeling that the"official" policy from a legal standpoint is that housekeeping is NOT allowed to take a guest's leftover if it was not explicitly given to them verbally or via a note.

This is of course to protect Disney, if they don't set this kind of policy, employees will start taking leftover food, leftover toiletries, leftover CD's, leftover camera equipment, etc.

That being said, I'm sure housekeeping does and will keep taking leftover foodstuff that will obviously be thrown away otherwise. Disney probably wouldn't enforce this policy for things left in the kitchen unless guest complaints start cropping up.

"Hey! Someone from from housekeeping took the caviar and Dom champagne I had chilling in the frig while I was loading up the car!!!" :smooth:

It's probably better to leave a note for housekeeping to help themselves so that they don't have ot break any albiet unenforced rules by taking stuff. Just be sure you packed the digital camcorder already! :D
