What do you do with the items that did not sell at the yard sale? Do you put them away for another yard sale or do you donate them to Good Will or where ever donations are taken?

We are having a garage sale next week to raise money for the Relay for Life. I do not want to be stuck with the junk, so anything left after the sale will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Thanks for the reply. I say when the yard sale is over this weekend that we should just haul whatever is left up to good will but my DH says to keep it for another yard sale. I do not want the stuff in the house thats why I am having a yard sale..........to get it out, not to bring it back in.

I'm not a "professional" garage sale holding person by any means.....but as long as it takes me to get around to having it I don't want to keep the stuff around when it's finally done. It's packed up and taken to goodwill. The ones I have had we actually held at a friends house so when we were done we loaded up and stopped by goodwill on the way home.

take them for goodwill and keep a detailed list of the items and what condition they are in. Then when you do your taxes next year, use IT"S Deductable to estimate their value. - Last year I TOOK ABOUT A $2000.OO
deduction from what a donated and it was not an extra ordinary amount of goods:dance3:

we donate items, always. if they were junk enough for us to want to sell, they are junk enough they do not need to be in our house. if someone else can use them, why not donate them?
i also hate yardsales so i hold them as infrequently as possible. :)

I donate most things, and bulky items. Things that I believe is "valuable" I keep for next time. I'm a hoarder, so even getting rid of half my stuff is a big accomplishment.

I am having my yardsale tom and sat and this year, I am donating most of the stuff to goodwill that does not sell. In previous years, I saved the stuff but I am sick of doing that. It is too much work and too much space.

A friend of mine always holds her yard sales over 2 consecutive weekends (although you can skip a week in between if you don't mind holding onto everything that extra time). Anyway, the first weekend, she sells on Saturday (and sometimes Sunday). The following weekend she has her sale on Friday and Saturday. (Fridays are pretty big yard sale days around here. If they aren't where you are this plan won't work.) She said that by mid-morning on Sat people aren't really looking very carefully anymore. They feel that all the nice things have already been picked over. On Friday, people think things have just been put out and are more willing to look through everything and don't see what is left as just "junk." She swears holding the things til the following Friday is well worth the effort. Also, by noon on the second Saturday, she pulls out anything that is really still in good shape and worth donating and puts out signs saying that everything left is free. She says that someone will always come along and take everything.

I bring the leftovers to the Salvation Army, with the exception of the more "valuable" things that I think I could sell on craigslist.

We usually keep a box or two of "leftovers" to act as seed for our next garage sale.

Every couple of weeks, we get a flyer in the mail from Vietnam Veterans of America stating they'll be in our area on a specific date. They run thrift shops and will come out and pick up your stuff. We call the number and let them know we have stuff. We then set it out in the morning in front of the garage door and they pick it up and leave a receipt in our mailbox. Completely tax deductible and we don't have to haul it anywhere.

Do you have any resale shops in your area that will buy them from you?
Or if your just wanting to give it away for free you can sign up and post it on Freecycle.com you have to sign up through yahoo.

Depend on the items. I do a sale alternating years and do one in spring nad one in fall. Most of the spring stuff gets saved for fall-already priced and I box everything up and stack in garage so it doesn't have far to go in the fall.

Then after the fall sale, I really only keep what I think will sell well later-like the bigger ticket items, and kids stuff in good shape. Adult clothing always gets donated as it takes up too much room and never gets the same good prices as kids' clothing. I usually save kids items (take them to the children's resale place and then box up any leftovers they don't take that are still in good shape-our resale place will sometimes not take if they deem they have an "abundance" of a certain item).

I try to label the boxes really well and stack them how I would organize them for the sale (one stack might have a box of shoes, a box of adult accessories, a box of adult jewelry, etc...) Especially with kids stuff, I put sizes on them-occasionally, I'll run across someone who is in need and I can pull an entire box and give it to them (I know it's bad, but I have an easier time passing stuff on to friends than to Goodwill as not sure how much of it actually gets put to use)

also, check out it'sdeductible.com. It works with Turbo Tax (I think) and gives you estimates of how much donations are worth...depending on what you have, the write off might mean more financially than the prices you could get at garage sale (plus time is money, so might make more sense to donate and be done with it than organize, price, pack, open, repack, etc...)

A lot of people offer their yardsale goodies on lists like Craigslist where people can come pick them up either giving the stuff away for free or even for a small fee to the person picking it up. Of course if you're not comfortable with something like that, then you can always donate. I sold my leftover yard sale items last year. Took everything that was left (other than my son's clothes, which I consign) and sold it for $20! It was out of my hair and I got some money out of it!

Good luck at your sale!

I had a yard sale last year and apparently everyone in my neighborhood was getting rid of all the same things (baby items). It is a huge neighborhood yard sale. But I took everything that was left and made 2 big boxes and put them at the end of my driveway and put FREE big across both boxes. A lady pulled up and asked if she could go thru it...told her help herself take what she wants it was all free. She took almost everything then comes up and gives me $70 bucks for the items cause she felt bad taking it all....sad to say that was most of what I made all day being outside in the sun.

I bring it all to the give-away shed at the dump as do lots of neighbors including the church next door.
