Help! My daughter and her friends leave in the morning for their first cruise. Is it better to bring cash or a credit card. Also do you have to have a credit card for the ship or can you pay with travelers checks or cash at the end?

You can pay with cash or travelers checks, but personally I would use a credit card because: a) you can use the charge card company's money for the billing cycle and then pay it off. b) If there is any dispute, you have the added protection of being able to file a dispute with the charge card company.
I once paid cash for a hotel room in Sandusky, Ohio, and was subsequently kept up all night by some sort of teen convention. The chaparones were staying in another part of the hotel, and the hotel personnel could not keep the kids under control. The next morning, the clerk pretty much told me, "Too bad," and a letter to the manager did not yield any results. You can bet I've always paid with a credit card from now on for any travel related items, just in case. Of course, you have to have grounds for a dispute...it would have been interesting to see how the hotel thing would have turned out, but I would have disputed it on the grounds that I did not get what I paid for (i.e. a room where I could actually sleep).

We brought a little cash with us, just 1's and 5's to use for tipping room service. Other then that everything was charged to our room, which was paid by credit card in the end.

Gagebre,
We are wondering the same thing. Our son is bringing his girlfriend on our cruise in a few weeks and I would like to put her debit card down for her extra charges.

On the last night can we charge her tips to our card or would they use the card they have on file?

In your docs, you will find a "charge authorization" form for each person on your reservation. Each person can have their KTTW charges charged to a different credit card, or you can have one for everyone. If you fill hers out with her credit/debit card info, her charges will go to her card.

As for tips, you can charge them all to your KTTW card and put the slips in the envelopes.

What about shopping in the ports? Don't you need cash for some things? Or are credit cards readily accepted?

If you are bringing credit cards (yes, more than one, in case you have problems with one you have a backup) it never hurts to call the credit company ahead of time and let them know you will be out of the country for a few days. They will flag your account for approved activity in that part of the world.

I live 5 miles from Canada and we often send guys from work over there and it never fails they always have trouble with the second transaction on the card in Canada because the credit card company has put a watch on the account because of foreign country activity. Yes, they have been asked to call before they go but they don't rememebr that part unti lthe first denial.

Have a great cruise.

plus some credit cards offer rebates & rewards...so you might as well use it to collect something. like the disney credit cards, you get reward points that you can use on future cruises/vacations, or disney products, etc. :wave2:
