I have been unable to find any tool to close the thread myself. If you would like to direct me to it, I'd be happy to do so. I am replying because I opened this thread and feel some sense of obligation to the conversation.
I don't believe I am being rude and I certainly don't believe I'm being any more rude to those people you're describing as "trying to be helpful".
There are a few options:
1) "Report" it and request it to be closed (probably the easiest is to report your own post):

2) "Unwatch" the the thread where you would only be notified via 'Alerts' should someone quote you by which you can disregard that alert and opt not to respond:

3) Ignore the thread when it comes up via 'Alerts'
And this next statement isn't meant as disrespect-while I understand starting a thread and wanting to respond out of politeness you aren't technically under an obligation to do so and it does no good to continually respond and noting you want the thread closed, people are beating a dead horse, your questions have been answered, etc when you don't really want to because you've stated you want the thread to 'die out'. It may also send a mixed message continually responding (and to posts you support as well as liking other people's posts that you agree with as that means you're still at least somewhat invested in the thread by reading people's posts) when you've expressed multiple times that you just want the thread to go away. Again no disrespect meant just giving a different perspective. With all that being said I don't have anything else to offer regarding the situation (I've said my opinion) just trying to give you information regarding your options.
