Leappad and Leapster

Even though I'm pretty sure they are not compatible, I was wondering if anybody could tell me for certain if the cartridges that you use in the Leappad will work in the portable Leapster system? My daughter has a Leappad right now with quite a few cartridges, but somebody is buying her a Leapster, and I was wondering if I needed to buy all new cartridges for it.
And if by chance they ARE compatible, what do you do with the book part of the leappad games? The books that you use with the Leappad are a lot bigger than the Leapster system?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I should add that it is the regular Leappad system, not the beginner system.

Thanks, I didn't think so, but was kind of hoping that I was wrong. Oh well, time to start looking for the best deals on leapster cartridges now.
