Laur’s & Andy do the Universe and the World – Day Twelve

Me – Laur’s – 27
DH – Andy – 28

Day twelve – 2 October 2006 – candy heaven

We booked our wake up call from Mickey and Stitch for 8.30 am this morning and had a bit of a lie in as I had been so tired yesterday. Plus tonight we were going to MNSSHP and we didn't want to burn out too early in the day. We had a coffee in our room and then set out about 10 am.

As we enjoyed our IHOP breakfast so much while we over at Universal, we decided to go to a nearby IHOP this morning as we were having a bit of a lazy day. We arrived about 10.30 am. I had a breakfast combo - two sausages, hash browns, two fried eggs and four slices of white toast. Andy had two pancakes, sausage, bacon, fried eggs, ham and hash browns.

After breakfast, we headed over to Walmart around 11.35 am. We bought beer, water, some sweets for me to take back for my work colleagues, and a mountain of Hersheys chocolate to keep me going until next year (or next time someone we know goes to Florida!)

After stocking up on these essentials, we went for a round of mini golf at Winter Summerland. We played the summer course this time as we have previously played the Winter course. I love mini golf and listening (and dancing) to the Christmas songs. We decided to fill in the score sheet this time as the CM told us that there was a prize for getting a hole in one on one of the holes. We were quite even on points, but Andy won by a few. I was very proud that I got two holes in one though, one on the elves hole and one on the Donald and Goofy hole. Sadly neither of them was the prize one, but I was equally pleased that we were given little candy canes when we handed our clubs in.

We left there at 2 pm and went back to the AKL. We did some filming of the animals on the third floor outcrops and in the lobby. We talked to a lady from South Africa who had a little stand set up in the lobby. She told us about elephant tusks and let us handle a replica (really heavy), about how giraffes only have seven bones in their necks like humans, and about frogs and how they can't be sick - so if they eat something bad the whole stomach comes out and they have to swallow it again - nice.

We went down to the Mara and got a strawberry ice lolly each. These were disgusting - I think they were sugar free or something, they were definitely taste free, anyway.

We had baths and then got the bus to Epcot, then the monorail over to the TTC and walked to the Polynesian resort to have some tea. We went to Captain Cooks (eventually, the restaurant has moved locations temporarily) and I had a gorgeous Hawaiian Flatbread, and Andy had stir fry noodles, delicious. We both love the Poly, the atmosphere is so relaxed and the CMs are very friendly. We headed up to the shop so that I could buy some Disney character tape for my sister, I got some last year for myself and it's really cute.

As if it wasn't bad enough that we had wasted time getting to the restaurant at the Poly, the monorail was now broken. We went to the dock to see the state of play with getting a boat over to the Magic Kingdom, but the queue was huge and not many people could get on a boat. We decided to cut our losses and walked to the TTA. The monorails were still not running, so we waited for the boat instead. There were hundreds of people waiting, but as these boats are so huge, we didn't have too long to wait. When we arrived at MK there was a huge crowd waiting to get in and I was getting more and more agitated. We eventually got our wrist bands and candy bags by 7.45 pm. I was very disappointed at being late, as the only other time we have done this party I was ill (and supposedly on bed rest - in Disney? Yeah right) so didn't make the most of it then either. We have already worked out our strategy for avoiding this next year! We were very disappointed with Disney - normally they are great at moving big crowds of people, but the lack of crowd control trying to get into MK was frankly scary.

My top priority was candy collecting, so Andy whizzed me round to Tomorrowland and then Toontown Fair where there were several candy collecting stations in a row manned by characters from Alice in Wonderland.

We caught the end of the parade before arriving at the Liberty Bell for our meet with other DISers. I was exceedingly nervous because I am very shy with people I don't know, but I needn't have worried because everyone was really nice. Denise (Deedee) came and introduced herself to me as she had recognised me from my sig pic and we met her husband and daughter. Sophie (Queenie) was next to arrive with Scott, and finally Aruna (jjpenguin). Aruna had made us all Mickey heads in either orange or lime green, which was really sweet, and mine is hanging proudly on my lanyard.
We chatted for a little while, and then went on the Haunted Mansion ride together. The line was quite long as you would expect at MNSSHP, but they had Madame Carlotta sat on the lawn entertaining guests. She was really good and kept us all laughing. After the ride, we headed down to the castle together to watch HalloWishes. We may be in a minority here, but Andy and I found this disappointing. The fireworks were amazing as always, but the soundtrack was slightly strange and disjointed. We thought we would be treated to the Disney villains trying to blow up the Magic Kingdom or something similar, but it was a bit neither here nor there as it turned out. I much preferred the fireworks we saw at MNSSHP in 2004.

After the fireworks we said our goodbyes to the other DISers, and went to get our pictures taken with our favourite characters, Minnie and Winnie, in their Halloween costumes. Eeyore came and gave me a big cuddle as he was feeling left out because I had spent so long cuddling Pooh!

By this time it was time for the second parade. Even though we only walked up 5-10 minutes before show time we got a great spot, the second parade being a lot quieter than the first. In contrast to HalloWishes, we loved the parade, particularly the grave diggers with their scraping shovels shooting sparks into the sky. As an added bonus, because we were at the front, every one of the people giving out candy at the end put a treat into my bag.

After the parade we queued for a while to have our picture taken next to Cinderella's carriage. It was worth the wait, the picture is lovely, in such a fairytale surrounding. We collected lots more candy and had our pictures taken with King Louie and Timon. Timon was funny - he kept trying to make himself look as tall as Andy by hoisting himself up on Andy's shoulder.

We made it to Philharmagic for the last showing of the night at midnight. It was very special being able to sit on the floor outside the theatre examining our candy haul whilst we waited for the doors to open. I can't imagine many times when you can even see the floor in there when you are waiting usually!

We left the park, stopping for a picture outside now the crowds had cleared.
We got back to the AKL about 1 am and made it to bed by 2 am, tired but incredibly happy.
