You could say that our trip didnt get off to the most auspicious start. I woke up on Thursday morning with a raging sore throat. I lay in bed for a while weighing up the options, and eventually decided that Id better go and see my doctor. A couple of hours later I had a diagnosis of strep throat and a prescription for antibotics.
I started taking the pills right away in the hope of knocking it on the head. We had a sandwich at home and set off a little later than we intended at 1.30 pm for the drive to London. I will point out at this juncture that it was Maundy Thursday a fact that had occurred to neither of us when we came up with the bright idea to drive to London. Suffice to say the drive was hell on toast.
We had a toilet stop at 3.30 pm and had only made it as far as Sandbach. We got a Sprite Zero and an orange calippo for my throat. We managed to keep going until 6 pm when we stopped at Newport Pagnall for comfort food in the shape of KFC. We had a zinger tower burger each and shared a large fries.
Around 7.30 pm it looked like the end was in sight. We spotted the hotel as we were coming off the motorway, but couldnt see how to get into it. Sadly, the way we decided to go took us on a one hour detour on to a dual carriageway via Heathrow in bank holiday and accident induced traffic. We finally figured out how to get to the hotel, only to be told at the check in desk that we were at the wrong hotel! I was about ready to punch someone by this point. It turned out we wanted the other Holiday Inn oh yeah, and it had the same name and was on same road. Oh right then, how stupid of us.
We finally arrived at the right hotel at 9.10 pm. We had a well earned cup of tea and I phoned my mum whilst Andy tried to get the TV to work. It was definitely broken so we called reception but they never did send anyone to fix it. That being the case, Andy went down to the bar and got himself a beer and me a coke and a cup of ice - and we played Uno until we were relaxed enough to go to sleep around midnight.
I found myself hoping that this was the bad dress rehearsal that would hopefully lead to a good performance the next day ..
