Laurs and Andy tackle the Big Apple Day 4

Happy birthday, Andy! Today was Andys 29th birthday. We were up at 8.30 am and Andy went off to get us some coffee whilst I sorted all his cards and presents out. We had brought all his cards from home, plus his presents from me. When he came back, we sat in bed and he opened his presents and cards, and afterwards we went down for breakfast. I had Lucky Charms, toast and a babybel, and Andy had cheerios, toast and a croissant.
Andy got to choose what we were doing today, of course, so we set out at 11 am for Central Park. We took the subway and then spent about an hour walking around the park looking for the zoo despite the fact wed found it by accident the day before! Eventually we found it, after asking for directions it is hard to believe you could get lost in a park, but Central Park is no ordinary park!
The zoo is lovely. It is quite small, so its easy to get around and see everything. We started in the Rainforest area, where my favourites were the brightly coloured poison dart frogs and the golden headed tamarin monkeys which are super cute.
After the rainforest, we went to look for the polar bear, who seemed to be hiding where could a bear that big hide? When we came round the final corner of the polar area, there he was almost posing for pictures.
We also saw the turtles, of which there were loads, including this exceedingly cute one with a baby on her back.
We had lunch in the Leaping Frog café. We shared some chicken and cheese quesadillas and chilli nachos, I had a diet coke and Andy had a lemon and lime soda.
After lunch we went to see the penguins (my favourite) and puffins, so cute, and then went to watch the sea lions being fed. They were very playful. Penguin feeding was next and we stayed there for ages watching them eat and listening to the excellent woman who was doing the talk. She was a real New Yorker and kept saying that the penguins were boirds great accent. One of the penguins had a baby (in the nest at the top of the photo) which we were lucky to see as they only keep the babies there for a few days until they get too adventurous and may want to slip into the water before they are able to swim.
When I finally tore myself away from the penguins, we checked out the snow monkeys before getting some ice cream. I cant remember what it was called but it was very much like dipping dots. I also bought a penguin in his own little igloo, super cute both mother and mother-in-law have tried to half-inch it!
We left the zoo after taking a picture of the wonderful clock, which chimes on the hour, and figures of animals playing instruments move around it.
We took the subway back to the hotel for showers and got dressed up for the theatre. We had booked tickets for Wicked as it was Andys birthday we wanted to make sure we could go to a show we wanted to see that night.
Neither of us were very hungry but we were concerned that we would have rumblings in our tummies if we didnt eat something, so we took the subway to Times Square and headed in (you guessed it) McDonalds. We got a diet coke, a crispy chipotle BBQ wrap for me and a grilled honey mustard wrap for Andy.
After eating we made our way to the Gershwin Theater (look American spelling and everything!). Despite the $20 price tag, we decided to buy a programme as it might be the only time we see a show on Broadway.
Andy had a beer before we went into the theatre (back to English spelling now) but I was concerned about my bladder (!) so made do with a bottle of water. Our seats were in the mezzanine level and excellent. I was blown away before the performance even started as the set was so fantastic. We both loved Wicked, but I loved it the most! It has a wonderfully clever story and I have asked for the book for Christmas so that I can read it too.
The show finished at 9.40 pm, and I was feeling hungry on the walk home so we stopped in a candy store so I could get some chocolate mallows. I love NY candy stores open at 10 pm as it should be.
We went to the rooftop terrace for a couple of drinks when we got back, beer for Andy and malibu and coke for me. The bar shut around 11.30 pm every night, prompting us to rename NY the city that sleeps more than we do! We went back to the room and raided the mini bar for some sparkling wine to toast Andys birthday. Fell asleep tired and happy at 12.30 am.
