Laundry Etiquette

I just returned from a great trip; split stay at OKW and AKV. One thing that disappointed me was the lack of consideration when using the laundry facilities.

I carried my laundry to the washers and both were being used. I left and returned 20 minutes later. The washers were done, so I waited for the people to return to empty them. While waiting, I was watching TV and noticed that 45 minutes had passed and the people had not yet shown up to empty the washers. Once again, I carried my laundry back to my room and waited. Finally, after more than an additional hour of waiting, the washers were available.

There is a sign in the room that lets users know that the wash cycle is 30 minutes long. Why do people leave their wash in the washers and return at their convenience? Don't they realize that there may be others waiting to use the facilities?

Oh, and please, clean the lint filter in the dryer.

Whew! Thanks for letting me vent. But, what would you do under these circumstances?

That had to be frustrating. Maybe Disney should consider putting in some baskets (that can't disappear) so that others can empty the washers/dryers if no one is around when they go off.

It would be nice if everyone was considerate and realize that they can not leave things for hours in the machines since other guest will need them.

Interesting topic. Brings me back to my college days when using the washer/dryers in the dorms. Anyhow, I think I did this once when I used the washer. Got busy at the pool or overslept my nap...something harmless.

I know that when I came back, my clothes had been taken out of the washer and someone had (neatly) stacked them on the laundry table. I had no problem with that and took no umbrage whatsoever.

I don't think I would hesitate to do the same to other people, I guess. Maybe I'm just rude......

If there were any place at all in the laundry room to put the laundry, I would have no problem whatsoever removing the other person's stuff and using the washer. I also would expect someone else to do likewise with my stuff if something unexpected happened to delay my return to get my laundry. You were far more patient than I would have been.

thats why we always do laundry on a pool day. we stay there until we are done.

I agree. I would remove the other person's laundry, and expect someone to do the same to mine if I was not there to remove it.

This is what we have always done whenever we have used a coin laundry. I think it's accepted as proper etiquette.

When I was at the Beach Club two weeks ago, I very politely removed the abandoned wash from the washer and placed it into a dryer. About an hour and a half later, when my wash was dry, I very politely put said abandoned wet laundry back into the washer it came out of. Never did see the person who owned it

How many washers and dryers are there to use at Kindani for us studio goers? Do I need to bring my own detergent? I figured I did so I have it ready (didn't know if they left some in the studio like the other bigger rooms). I am always a chatty Kathy when I do laundry there--so if anyone runs into a pooh sized blonde that won't shut up it might be me.

I never leave my laundry unattended....a pet peeve of mine, too.

I think proper etiquette is to wait 5 minutes and then take it out. I will place it in the dryer if available and not turn it on so as. Not to damage anything.

This last trip, between our concierge studio and DCL I really missed our 1 bedroom villa we normally book just because of the laundry. DCL is hectic and busy and it's $2 to wash and $2 to dry. You really have to stay. With your laundry there. I always meet really nice people there and some we exchange emails but it is so much better I to do laundry at my leisure.

Oh, this is an issue of mine, and I'm talking hotels in general. I was in Maine this past weekend for a soccer tournament and collected the team's uniforms to wash after day one. One washer/one dryer for the whole hotel. I threw the load in the washer (there was stuff in the dryer and no one around) and when I went back (I knew how long the wash cycle was and was diagonally across the hall anyway), the dryer had finished it's cycle. So I put their dry stuff on top of the dryer and threw my load in. When I came back to check on it 20 minutes later, the other person's dry clothes were gone, and half my WET load was on top of the dryer, and half was still in the dryer, which was turned off. I think they took offense to my taking their stuff out of the dryer. Boy, was I PO'd.

I would NEVER expect anyone to wait around for me to show up if my stuff was done and they needed the laundry facilities. At a prior tournament, we waited late one night for someone else's "load" to go through a 60 minutes cycle in the dryer, and when it was done, I emptied it...ONE uniform, which probably dried 10 minutes into it. And in the time it took me to wash and dry a REAL load, the person never showed up to get that one uniform.

I have to say...having a washer/dryer in my DVC room is a MAJOR thrill for me. (But it IS!)

I don't know how many washers and dryers there are at Kidani, but you do need to bring your own detergent. That isn't supplied in studios. ONly 1 bdrm and larger. There are machines I beleive if you forget, or the gift shop.

I have never been to a laundromat in my life and would love if someone posted what was acceptable when using one....

A few trips ago we were staying at BCV's in a studio and someone actually took my wet clothes out of a dryer and loaded all their clothes into the four dryers....Imagine my surprise when I walked in the room to find the clothes I expected to be dry sitting on the table damp and in a ball....

Of course, I did the only thing I could think of, I took the clothes out of one of them and put my damp clothes back in. I then sat there and waited for my clothes to be dry, maybe 25 minutes....

No one came in while I was there and I did not return their clothes to the dryer....Karma, ya know?....

OK, you know, I am glad you brought this up. Here's the thing. I was waiting to see if you would go ahead and put them in the dryer, because I was hoping that if you did you would go ahead and fold them when they were finished because you wouldn't know where to put them. Eventually I figured out you weren't going to put them in the dryer so I had to go ahead and do it myself.

Right there with you... If you are using a washer or dryer, then it is your responsibility to keep tabs on it and make sure you are not holding anyone up. No different than sitting at a stop light. You may not be in a hurry, but the person behind you might just have a very important appointment.
