Launderette upgrades on DCL fleet

When we were on the Fantasy in April, the launderettes were undergoing upgrades. A couple of them were closed at the time we embarked, and then gradually reopened with a new set of equipment (blue/stainless Electrolux WH6-6 machines and matching washers, removal of the "kiosks" for putting tokens onto KTTW cards, etc.), while others were closed. By the time we disembarked, all 7 launderettes were upgraded, and all prior laundry equipment was dumped on the peer in PC.
I was wondering if other ships went through similar upgrades over the last few months, or if this is something that was done as a one-off on the Fantasy? It was interesting that such a significant refit was done during normal cruise (albeit with some inconvenience to customer), and not during dry dock. Does the rest of the fleet have upgraded / newer equipment, or do they still have the old white kit and token kiosks?

I would love to hear a report on the laundry situation on Magic and Dream. Trying to pack as light as possible and also determine if I can wait until we are on the ship or need to do it on a WDW resort day.

Is detergent still bring your own or purchase there ? Or is it now dispensed ?

No, you used to have to first buy credits at a separate machine on the wall, which you then used at the actual washer or dryer.
That's what you do currently. You used to be able to buy at the machine. Seems like they are going back to the old way.

I was on the Dream in May, they still had detergent for sale and you paid with your card at each individual machine. Though it was confusing at first as the token kiosks were still in the laundry rooms telling you to buy a token, which was not the case.

On the Fantasy after the equipment was upgraded some kiosks were left behind, but the sensors on them were removed, so they could no longer be used.

Can you still open them without your KTTW?
Otherwise I can see them being left full for ages.

I literally cannot remember anything about how I did laundry on the Wish.

I remember trying to buy laundry detergent but my 3 year old kept button mashing on the fabric softener because it has the Snuggle bear....so I came home with extra fabric softener 😂

Yes, once the cycle is over, the door of the washer can be unlocked with a twist of the handle. Dryer door is magnetically closed.

I hope you are not removing other people's items
Do you think there is any limit to how long one person should be able to leave their completed laundry in a machine if no other machines are available?

I agree it’s a jerk move in the first 10 minutes or if there are any other machines available, but there aren’t enough machines for people to leave laundry in a machine for 3 hours because they don’t want to move it between the theater and dinner.

I think if clothes have been left 3 hours then by all means speak to guest services and have them move them. I don't think you should be touching other people's property.

Why should we waste guest services’ time moving laundry that has sat there for an hour (to say nothing of the time of the guest who just wants to do their laundry— why should they walk to guest services and wait in line instead of handling the laundry left in a machine?)?

Why would it be less objectionable for guest services to move it on top of a free space than a guest?

I don’t like the idea of strangers (guests or guest service CMs!) touching my clean laundry, but I can avoid it by setting a timer and returning to fetch my items when the cycle is complete. The machines are a shared community resource and they shouldn’t be tied up by people who can’t make it back to collect their belongings— I’m pretty sure the norm in every shared laundry facility is that people who don’t want their clothes set aside by strangers need to return and handle their own laundry in a timely fashion.

I think because you will find out guest services doesn’t actually and will not move it. If guest services is refusing to perhaps you should also.

I know this because I had clothing stuck in a washing machine due to a malfunction. The machine broke mid cycle and would not open- maintenance could not open it for several hours. Because it stopped mid cycle guest services was willing to rewash all items however, they could not once the machine was open take items from the machine. I had to come and meet them when they called me at 3 AM to take the items out of the machine and hand them to them.

If Disney’s policy is not to remove or touch guest property from the machines, why is it OK for you to do it?

I totally understand wanting a dryer, but I’ve seen people literally take clothes out of a washing machine still wet and put them wherever in the laundry room. A recent Disney Vlogger had an issue with someone taking their clothes out of the dryer, still wet and putting them wherever. And I’m gonna go out on a limb and say 10 minutes is a very tight time window. The app notifications are often delayed and it can take a little bit to remove yourself location - And return to the laundry room.

The dryers don’t work on set timers they send you notifications through the app which sometimes will and will not come. For instance, I never received an app notification about my clothes that were stuck in the washer. I just knew it had been far too long because the washer never completed the cycle.

Also, if people don’t notice the “in use” and open the dryer, checking for a free one- the dryer cuts off. If you open a dryer and there are clothes in it, you have to manually tell the dryer to restart and guests don’t always do this which also messes up things. And I’m curious- what’s your personal feeling about removing wet items that are clearly not dry? And when you choose to remove somebody’s items, where are you putting them that is clean?

I’m personally at a point where I will not use the laundromat onboard because of issues in the past and I will send clothes out to be cleaned if I need them but with a number of washers and dryers onboard (if not always at the most convenient locations) I don’t feel that I ever needed to remove other peoples belongings to make my own washing/drying go faster.
