I know some of you asked for updates so here is the latest......

I had a long talk with Anthony today, he said the amputation went okay (if that is possible). They had to take him off of the morphine before the surgery so he was in excrutiating pain for about 5 hours after the surgery. Anthony and Jason (James' twin) stayed all night with him, each one holding one hand.

Hip surgery is still scheduled for tomorrow, they may do a skin graft when they fix the hip. So that is kind of where it stands, waiting. As long as no emergency surgeries come in tomorrow will be hip day. He should be out of the hospital about a week after than and he will go into a rehab center for about a week. His stump will have to heal for several months before they can start prostesis (sp??) therapy.

James' spirits have been high the whole time and he has had alot of visitor and well wishes. He was told about the other thread here, their mom read it all. They family thanks everyone here for their wishes, prayers and concerns!!!

Thank you. :)

*** edited to add, for those of you that may not have read my earlier thread, James was in a motorcycle accident. Here is a link to that thread ***

Thanks for the update Christine! I will continue to keep him and his family in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks for the update Christine! Saying a prayer for James and his recovery.

Continued good wishes and prayers, Christine, for James and all the family. So sad. Hoping recovery and rehab goes well.

Okay, the hip surgery was today, it went okay. They also did a skin graft on his left thigh for the area they amputated. It was his right leg, approx 3-4 inches below the knee. Luckily he has the knee but he will never be able to drive a "normal" vehicle again.

James said the accident was avoidable - the lady was not paying attention at all and she has no insurance, etc....

He is on ALOT of pain again but hopefully in a few hours they can get that back under control. Anthony said his PT may start as early as tomorrow.

Christine, I have been thinking of James, you and the rest of his family and friends. My heart goes out to all of you and you all are in my prayers.

I drive a van with hand controls. After my accident I am unable to use my legs for driving... so..

I had a Driving instructer who came to my home to teach me how to use hand controls... it is relatively simple.. REALLY!!! I promise he will be able to do it within a week of starting to train.

Ask KimRaye she will vouch for me! I do well with the handcontrols.. well I hope she will vouch for me.... LOL

I am glad that he rec'd BKA's those are a bit easier to walk with than AKA's.. above knee amp.
The biggest thing now is getting a good tough stump. It has to be good and tough to absorb the wear and tear from the prosthesis. He will rec'v plenty of PT...

Teaching ambulation to amputees was fun for me. Most people learn quickly because they are so very motivated! There are many double amputees who do extraordinary things, like sky diving, bicycling, scuba diving, etc.. etc.....
Best wishes for a good recovery!
