We're a family of 4 and our flight won't get in until 8:30 p.m. I've heard it takes a few hours to get your bags -- would it make sense to get your luggage at baggage claim and bring it with you on the bus or do you have to get it delivered to the hotel?

I realize that it's a great convenience to skip baggage claim though - or would you suggest just to pack enough in your carryons for sleeping and for the outfit for the next day at the park and wait to get your luggage the next day if it's late?

You can always pick it up yourself. Just do not put the magic express yellow tags on it.

However, experienced air travelers recommend always packing a carry on with whatever you'll need for the first 24 hours at your destination (even on your way home, in case of emergency). It doesn't matter what you decide to do about having your checked luggage delivered; while misdirected luggage stats have dropped, they haven't disappeared.

DME says that your luggage will arrive around 3 hours after you land. That puts you at around 11:30 at night. It MIGHT arrive sooner but do you want to stay awake and wait? In my BIL's visit, they held it until the next morning so as to not wake him up at night and delivered it at 7:30 in the mornng.

It's really not going to be too big of a hassle to claim your luggage and put it on DME for peace of mind. If you really don't want to make that stop, pack whatever clothes and toilitries you are going to need for the next day in a carry on and get your luggage the next day.

Me, I hate lugging the suitcases but know that I would forget that one thing that we need for the next day.

If you follow kaytieeldr's sage advice keep in mind that you do not have to have the luggage delivered to your room in the middle of the night. When you get to the resort, tell bell services to hold your ME bags until you call them in the morning. Also put the "Do Not Disturb" sign on your door just in case somebody doesn't get the message.

That is not quite right. You should get your luggage within 3 hours of checking in to your resort, the delivery clock starts ticking then, not when you land.

I would pack what you need for the first 24 hours in your carry-on. It is always best to do that anyway. Let DME handle the checked bags for you. No need to stop and get your checked bags and taking even more time to get to your resort. Tell the desk at check in to please hold your bags when they arrive. Then put the Privacy Please card on your door. They will hold your bags, and you can call down the next morning and have them brought up.

I would definitely pick up the bags and take with me. I have found that typically by the time I get to baggage claim, use the restroom, it's just a few minutes before the bags start coming out and I am on my way.

I would much rather get settled in that night that wait until the next day.

FWIW, a few trips ago when my girls very much younger our 9 am flight got delayed to 230pm. We landed in FL at 5:30. At Disney by 6:15-6:30 and luggage didnt get to our room until 11 pm. Even though I had some emergency things packed, with a toddler I was not happy with what happened (not anyone's fault but bad luck!).

So the next trip we landed (scheduled) at 630pm. This time we were smart and picked up our own luggage and took it with us on the magical express. I was MUCH MUCH happier!

Things can happen no matter what, but to me it was worth it so have the luggage the 1st night at a reasonable time.

Would this work if we're changing resorts the following morning? We don't need our bags before checking out of AoA and into the THV as my carry will have enought to get us through the night and ready for the next day. Would the bell desk at AoA move them to the THV without me having to deal with my luggage at all? You may have just saved me a great headache. :thumbsup2

Yes, pack carryon for the first night and use the DME Luggage delivery for your checked bags. In the am when you check out of AOA bell services will move all your bags (including your carry on bags) over to the next resort. It does take a while so don't expect to have your bags until after check in time at the THV, maybe even later.
