Traveling with a party of 9. My brothers family(4), my family (4) and my mom. If I make a diner reservation for 9 that is reserved by my credit card and my brothers family decides not to go at last minute and the rest show for the reservation, will my credit card be charged for them not showing up. They have a bad habit of canceling late. If they would give me enough notice I would definitely call and bump it down to the correct number.

I think it's like the cancelation policy. As long as you throttle back at least a day in advance you should be fine. Here's what I got on a recent ADR:

"You must cancel at least one day prior to your reservation to avoid a per person cancellation fee. If you fail to cancel or are a no show, the credit card provided at the time of reservation will be charged $10.00 per person."

As long as SOMEONE from your party shows up, you're not going to be charged the cancellation fee for the others. It's missing the ADR entirely that incurs the $10/person charge.

If they cancel late, I would probably just try (out of courtesy) to call and let the restaurant know it's down to 5 instead of 9, so they can possibly seat 4 other people.

Agree with the previous poster - I had several reservations for more than what showed up (friends canceled, husband tired, etc), and it was fine. As long as some of us showed - we were fine.
