We usually arrive home from Disney a couple days before Labour Day and I see next year the holiday is not until September 7th. Does the school board in Ontario generally start school the week before? Trying to plan our next trip!
Thanks,
Mo

Labour day Monday is the first Monday in September. So if the first Monday is on the 7th....kids start back to school on the 8th. :goodvibes

A few years back Labour Day was on the 7th so here in Ottawa they started school the week before. Made for some some confusion around the schools.

Calendars are board specific, although the Ministry does make recommendations. For example, for several years now the Catholic boards in the Ottawa region (English and French) have returned a week earlier than the public boards - they went back in August this year. The Ministry shows the recommended return date of Sept 7 2015 at this time.

You should be sure to check the calendar on the Kingston board's web site.

I phoned our school board and was told it would be a September 8th for the first day of school. I'll keep checking but looks like we might have a chance at a MNSSHP!

Speaking from experience, these dates can be pretty dicey up until the board actually publishes the calendar. Although the Ministry posts the recommended calendar several years in advance, the school boards can take their sweet time deciding. We own a week 11 timeshare (usually Ontario March break) and have to decide far in advance if we are going to use it or deposit it for trading. DW is a school teacher, so we know that the Ottawa Board took the dates for March break 2015 to the teachers for a vote. That vote result wasn't announced until near the end of this past school year, MONTHS after we had to make our decision. Luckily they stuck to the ministry calendar THIS time, because we had already decided to try to use it. Next time we might not be so lucky.

This can impact lots of Disney vacationers as many of us start our planning many months in advance.

I know in Niagara it's been the day after Labour Day as long as I can remember. Now that I've said that of course I am sure this will be the first year ever that it's changed :rolleyes1.

Bite your tongue! I will be blaming you if school starts before the 8th next September. :lmao:

The school boards have to get 194 days of school in (188+6 PD Days). In our Board, the last time it was this late, the teachers had a PD Day the last week of August and the kids started after Labour Day.

Oh yes....I think I do remember this.

And after the mess the boards around Toronto made of March Break a few years ago they now need to get permission to do something different with the dates of those major holidays. DW is also a teacher. Expectation is that they will have a couple of PD days the week prior to labour day in order to get the required number of teaching days in between labour day and the end of the year.

I bet MNSSHP won't start until Labour Day Monday next year though. :(

This year wasn't the first one the 1st? I can't see them missing out on 2-3 nights of party revenue and wait until after Labour Day.

We're also planning on going from about Aug 21-1 or 2nd.

I don't think they've ever had a MNSSHP earlier then Labour Day Monday and most of the parties in the past started around mid September anyways.

My fingers are crossed for it to happen before Labour Day though. :goodvibes

We were talking about this last night. Here is the Ont Ministry of Labour school calendar and I can't decide if this means that school starts before Labour Day

Thank you for posting this!

These are holidays Province wide, but each school board will determine their own professional development days, plus their start and finish dates. Traditionally, school for everyone begins Labour day, but as previous posters have mentioned, that could change because of the late labour day next year.

My fingers are crossed for a late start. :wizard: We probably won't know until next spring.

Used to be mid -Sept but keeps starting earlier (they want the $$$) early Sept is so dead might as well get some people in the parties.

This year's dates September 1, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 21, 23, 26 & 28.

Fingers crossed for next year.

Our board will start on the 8th and we will leave for Disney on the 10th. So my oldest will get 2 days in before we leave. My middle daughter will be starting junior kindergarten and they do gradual entry, so she may not get any school in before hand. Maybe an hour long visit... but otherwise she'll start when we get home on the 21st.

I would love to see a late start after the Labour Day. There seems to be so many great things going on at Disney that 1st week of September. DH is a teacher here in Nova Scotia so it isn't possible to go outside of normal holiday time.I am obsessing over school schedules. :lmao: . I have a bounceback booked for the last two weeks of August but it won't be a problem to change. Hopefully we will know more before dining reservation time. Fingers crossed.

This is what our school board did as well....but I think they used 2 PD days in August. They were the Thurs and Fri going into Labour Day weekend. It happened 2 years is a row.
