My flight isn't until the evening. I've heard that I could request a late checkout. When is the latest I can check out of the room? When do I have to request it?

The latest I have gotten is 1:00 pm. If I remember correctly from a couple of years ago - they make you call housekeeping the day before you want it.

I have heard that different resorts have different policies on late checkout and that some will not allow it at all. I don't think I have ever been granted late checkout at a Disney resort, but I have asked for it a few times. I would ask when I checked in and then follow up the day before check-out. Last time was a few years ago at Poly, and they told me they would not know until the evening before.

Exactly one year ago today, we stayed one night at Disney at POFQ. We got an early check-in, and a late check-out at 1 p.m.

I have tried for late check out several times at WDW. Only successful three times - once for 12:00 and twice for 1:00 pm. It can and often will be denied, so, as lilyWDW said "have a backup plan'. Your other option is to pay for the extra night, then you can stay as late as you like.

1 PM at no additional charge, and only if permission obtained from Housekeeping in advance.
3 PM at 50% of nightly rate.
After 3 PM, as late as you want by paying for another night.

When is the ideal time to request this? At check in? Day before check out? Morning of check out? And where do you ask? Front desk? Call housekeeping?

If you are staying at a DVC resort, there is no late check out at all. It takes longer to clean the villas and you need to be out by 11AM. And check in is after 4PM.

1:00pm is the latest free check out time. I would try either the night before or 1st thing in the morning.

You call housekeeping on room phone. They won't know anything when you check in, best time to ask is the night before or 1st thing in the morning on check out day.

All the above. Note that calling the Front Desk from your room does not connect to the actual Front Desk but to a call center. The Housekeeping button is local to your resort.

So check early and often and even then you might get turned down or find a housekeeper at your door at 11 AM or earlier on you scheduled "Check-out" day.

Same for us - we only received a late check out 3 times. Twice noon and one 1pm. Never later than that.

I've found putting a Do Not Disturb sign on our door to be very helpful in keeping eager beaver housekeepers away. I now do this on every check-out morning, not only when I get late check-out, to keep them from waking us up early.

I also do that on check out day.

We do too. We've had a housekeeper knock on our door as early as 8:00 am on check out day, and then every 10 minutes to see if we were leaving yet , and when we left the room at 8:50 for a 9:00 Chef Mickey's ADR, she was ready to swoop in and clean. DME picks us up at 12:00 so we always check out at 11:00. I learned the value of the "Do Not Disturb" sign after that morning.

That happened to us, I HAD the Do Not Disturb sign on door, and went down stairs with luggage to check in with the Airlines desk, and when I returned to room EVERYtHING was gone and beds stripped!!! All the clothes I had laid out on bed for flight( I change into long pants because I find it cold on plane, and sweater) my food in fridge, pool noodles I was giving to a friend staying longer, and some other items I was also giving to friend.
Imagine the look on housekeepers face on seeing us back in room. First think I said was where is all our stuff? I had the sign on door!!! Housekeeper apologized and said people put it on door and don't take it off after leaving. I said, but clearly there was a lot of things left in the room---oh, housekeeper said, you'd be surprised what people leave behind. Grrrrr. Made my leaving day totally stressful. Housekeeper was running around trying to find all our things he took away. They really can get over zealous

I too leave things in our room when we go down for breakfast because we also change into long sleeved shirts and pants for our flight. I don't truly finish packing our carry-on bags until a few minutes before we leave the room for good, and I'd be very upset if we were to come back from breakfast to find our items scattered or not there. Last June, they deactivated our Magic Bands after we did airline check-in [there was an issue with my daughter's boarding pass so we had to go to the front desk, and they just assumed we were leaving right then]. Thankfully my aunt was still in the room [she drives in from Jupiter, FL] and able to let us back in. Housekeeping appeared 2 minutes later and was confused as to why we were still in the room.

Wow! I might start leaving a big note on the bed when we temporarily leave the room on check-out day. "Do not clean this room. We are not checked out." Maybe laminate it with hard laminate and just bring it with me on every trip...Would be totally worth it to me, as the situation you described would drive me over the edge.

Yes, it drove me over the edge. But I kept my cool. I had to rush down to ADR breakfast where friends were waiting for me, then catch my DME. But I got the name of the Housekeeping manager and wrote her a letter when I returned home. She phoned me and discussed issue with me at length.
