I'm planning on buying into DVC in about 2 weeks. I've had a lot tell me that they are offering $1200 off plus 2005's points. So if I buy 250 points then I end up with 500 points!!! Is this really true? Will I actually get the previous year's points when I buy in? :confused3

Yes that is so....or the way it has been if you get a Sept or later UY. At least thats the way it was with Friends and family that just ended 2/1. :goodvibes

We just bought in Jan and immediatly got 2005 pts (150) and then Dec 1st we'll get 150 more pts for 2006. :woohoo:

OK, this has been stated in a couple of posts and I'm still confused. Let's try an example. Let's say I buy a new 150-point contract at SSR and get a September Use Year. Would Disney give me the following:

Last year's points (Sep '04): 150
Current points (Sep '05): 150

Total: 300

Are the Sep '04 points considered banked points that I have to use or lose by Aug 31, 2006?

Does this happen only if you are purchasing a new contract at SSR or does it also apply to add-ons? Has anyone purchasing an add-on at a sold-out resort received last year's points or just the current-year points?

you get more than $1200 off if you buy 250 points. the $1200 is if you buy 150 points. if you buy 250 you get $2000 off. Its $8 off per point, that is how they get $1200 off, 8x150=1200. And yes you would start with 500 points this first year.

If you purchase 150 points with a Sep UY, You will get the Sep 05 points, and on Sep 1 '06, you will receive 150 more points.

Are you sure about this? My "guide" didn't say anything about me getting more than $1200 and he did not mention me getting last year's points at all either. I tried calling him back today but I got his answering service that said he was off Sundays and Mondays..should I call someone else?

This is how I always thought it worked, too -- you get current year points at time of purchase. But I've seen several posts where people state that they got "last year's points". I can't figure out if people are just referring to those points incorrectly as "last year's" when they are really "current", or if they really did get 2 Use Year's worth of points at the time that they purchase. And if that's the case, I'd like to know how many of those points were bankable.

LisaS:
When we purchased in August '05, we were given a March UY. We immediately had those 160 points available to us to use or bank or whatever the heck we wanted to do. We only paid maintenance on the points from that specific buy-in date in August through Dec 31. Shortly after we purchased, the F&F deal came out and we purchased 140 more with our March UY. Those points were also immediately available with MF only due from mid-October to Dec 31. We will get our complete allotment of 300 points for our '06 UY on March 1. Well, we would have gotten them if we didn't already use them!

Not sure if DVC was ever actually "giving" away the previous years points or if that sort of became the urban legend of DVC.

We bought in January'06 and they gave us our use year of August 1st. Once we signed we received 200 points that have to be used by July 31st or had to be banked by Feb.1st. We will receive another 200 in August. Since we were planning on going at the end of August we had to bank the 200 points before we made our reservations. Hope this helps.

OK Use Year If you have a UY of Aug : on Aug 05 you got say 150 point to use from Aug 05 to Aug 06 you can use or bank those point in that span of that time. Comes Aug 06 you get another 150 to use from Aug 06 thru Aug 07 same thing to use or bank. Does that help.

I just added on a few months back Jan and my use year is April. As soon as I gave a deposit and signed papers they gave me my 120 April 05 points and now on April 1, 2006 I will get 120 more points to use so I will have 240 in my account on that date since I haven't used them yet . :goodvibes

We purchased last week. The points are last year's in that i you have a Sep UY, they would be from Sep'05. Therefore, you have the Sep '05 points and in September '06, you will receive your next allotment of points. The rebate in $8 per point you purchase. If you purchase 250 points, you will receive a rebate of $2000. We purchased 210 points and received a $1680 rebate. We have a Dec UY, so we got the Dec '05 points and on 12/1 will receive the Dec '06 points.

So far everyone is reporting that they got current use year points only, not last use year's points in addition to the current use year points. Thank you all very much for clearing this up. That's how I thought it worked but having seen a few posts lately where people were stating that they got "last year's points" I was beginning to wonder.

It's important not to confuse Use Year with Calendar year.

Today, everyone, except those with a February Use Year, are still in their 2005 use year points.

You're not getting a free year of points, you are getting current year points.

If you purchase today a September use year, you will get the Sep 2005 UY points, which is the current use year. Those are the points you would be using to make a vacation for most of 2006. Your September 2006 points would be for your late 2006 and most of your 2007 calendar year travels.

Hope this helps.

That is very hepful information for soon to be members.
I bought SSR in Nov 2003 and was given a Feb 04 use year. SSR opened in May 2004. So I received no 2003 points, even though my membership card says I'm a member since Dec 2003. If a new DVC resort in announced, don't make the same mistake I did. I lost a whole years worth of points, 400 in my case. :(

Lisa: Maybe this example will help. I already have a Feb UY. On 12-29-05 I did a 30 point add-on. Since I was almost at the end of my use year (1-31-06) I still received all of the 2005 points (30) and when Feb 1st came, I received 30 more. I am only responsible for dues on the 2005 points for one month only, because I bought with only one month left on the use year. So, in effect, I had 60 points as of Feb 1. Since it was a new contract, I was allowed to bank the 05 points into the 06 use year. Otherwise, it would have been too late for me to bank any points. Matt :)

Hi Matt. What you described is exactly how I thought it worked - you get current Use Year points only, no previous Use Year points.

When I read posts where people state they got "previous year's points" with their contracts, I had initially assumed it was a terminology issue - people new to DVC referring to points in terms of calendar year rather than Use Year, calling the points "previous year's points" because their current Use Year started in '05. It makes sense to them, but it can cause confusion when communicating with members who think in terms of Use Year, not calendar.

But then earlier today I saw a post by a DVC member who owns a few contracts stating that he got "last year's points". Seeing this in a post by a non-newbie got me wondering whether I had missed a memo or something that Disney really was handing out banked points as well as current use year points with new contracts!

By the way, it was nice of DVC to let you bank those points you bought at the end of Dec '05 so close to the end of your use year. When I decided to buy in to DVC, I was all set to to purchase directly from Disney until they told me they would not let me bank the current use year points that came with the contract because I would be within 2 months of the end of my use year when I closed on the contract. I ended up buying resale instead. I wish they would be consistent about these things!

Hi Lisa: I agree, sometimes it seems like the consistency is not there. If I knew then what I know now, I would have been better off. In post #16 I stated I lost out on 400 pts, because that was my initial buy in. Nov 14, 2003 was my purchase date, but if I would have insisted on a Dec 2003 UY, I would have received 400 pts for one time use, which I could have used once SSR opened in May 2004. People that bought in Aug 2003 early on received 2003 points, I bought 90 days later and received zero. I know what you mean about consistency. Matt :(

All I can say to that is "Ouch!" You could have had a very nice vacation with those 400 points.
