I'm planning for possible last minute planning (that sounds like a total contradiction, but here goes):
I'd like to take an impromptu long-weekend (3-4 days) trip to WDW sometime between mid-January & the first week in February (not over any of the holiday weekends). We've been to WDW during that time in the past few years, and it was our favorite time to travel based on lower crowds and nice temperatures.
Here's the issue: I'll be starting a new job in a few weeks, and I won't know if I'll be able to take a vacation day or two to make for a long-weekend trip until probably December. This means if I'm going to try to get us to WDW during our favorite time to go, I'll probably only have a month to reserve the hotel & plan our short trip.
My problem is this: I know in the past WDW has released specials to fill up these traditionally "slower" times and I'm wondering if that will make it really hard to book a WDW hotel for a long weekend when I'd likely only be booking 3-4 weeks out from our trip. I'd also be willing to consider Swan & Dolphin, but I'd rather not branch out beyond that to other non-Disney hotels because we want to be able to get Extra Magic Hours to make the most of our very short trip.
Also, since I know our trip would not be able to be more than 3 nights, I doubt I'd be able to take advantage of any packages WDW would offer, so might it be worthwhile to book a long weekend sooner rather than later, and then if I have to cancel or change the reservation later I could try that? I'm reluctant to do that just because I worry it would be difficult to change or cancel an existing reservation & I wouldn't want to lose the deposit $$.
