Monday 6th August 2007

The big day had arrived!! We are up around 4.30 am and out the door, walking to the bus stop in the square for our 5.50am pick up on the National Express coach to Heathrow Airport.

We made our way to Terminal 3. We almost missed the Krispy Kreme shop on our way to security! We stopped for a box of 12 donuts and coffee, juice and tea. The 12 donuts were the same price as 7 so we had to do it!

We used the self service check-in, needed a bit of help with the passport scanning. The official on passport duty couldn’t be bothered anymore he said when looking at our passports! We checked bags in and went through the security gates and found a seat. Had a look around the shops and bought a couple of mags for the flight. Got some bagels and a sandwich before making our way to the boarding gate.

Our flight was UA931. We were boarded through the first class lounge and for a moment we all thought this was it for us! We had 3 bulkhead seats, DS, DH and I sat in those and DSis and DD had normal aisle seats

We landed at San Francisco airport at 4.20pm. We had been in the air for around 10 hours. We had to collect our bags and then re-check them after we passed through security. The bags had arrived really quickly. The re-checking area looked a bit hit and miss and the bags were taken by someone we weren’t even sure worked there! We made our way to the gate for the connecting flight, gate 74. We went in the shop and DSis got the first gift of the holiday – a fridge magnet! DD got a Stanford lip balm. DSis saw the woman on the till clipping her nails with one of the nail clippers that was for sale and the bits were flying over the chocolate bars!

We sat and watched the planes out of the window. We were boarded shortly and took off on time. The internal flight to Las Vegas was with Ted and it was fine, around an hour and ten minutes long. The pilot sounded like Elvis! We will never forget seeing the lights of Las Vegas come into view, all that neon glowing in the desert! We landed at McCarren International airport on time and got our bags, no security this time as we were on an internal flight, so much easier. I had arranged for a stretch limo to meet us but we could not see it. We made enquiries with other limo drivers until we found one from the same company I had booked with. Turned out they had our arrival time wrong, even though my confirmation was correct. A limo was sent to us but the driver was not very talkative and was a bit of a let down. It was a short drive to the Tuscany Casino and Suites and on the way we looked out in wonder at all the hotels which were so familiar to us from seeing them on TV.

We checked in at the Tuscany at 9.45pm. Our two rooms were almost identical and they were also huge! We were tired but excited. We were also hungry so we went to Marilyn’s Café for our first American meal.

After the meal DSis and DD went back to their room to sleep. DH, DS and I stayed on in the casino and played a few slots and DS out some money on the roulette wheel. The dealers were not very friendly. We were in bed by 12.15; we had been up over 28 hours! The bed was small and dipped in the middle! Had to turn off the air conditioning due to the noise. But we were so tired we had quite a good sleep!

Tuesday 7th August 2007

We were up at 7am and the weather was already looking hot! We decided to walk the strip and find somewhere to eat breakfast. The strip was two blocks away and an easy walk. We turned left onto the strip and went into the Paris hotel. Decided to try the breakfast buffet at $14.99 each. Glad we did as it was fantastic. The restaurant was themed as if it were a small French village. We filled our boots and then explored the rest of the hotel.

Outside the temperature was getting hotter but it was not humid so it didn’t feel so bad to us. We walked to the Miracle Mile shops for a quick look. DH got an Angels tee shirt and DSis and I bought crocs! Mary Janes for me and Caymans for her. DD got a nice Roxy tee shirt which said Las Vegas’ on it to go with her collection. DS bought some used casino cards and poker chips.

We walked the strip until we got to the New York, New York hotel. An old drunk looked at DD while we were waiting to cross a road and said ‘How ya doing, Roxy’ to her! We looked around NYNY and DH got another tee shirt. Got a tram to the Luxor hotel so that DS could check out the poker room. He liked the look of it so he got some chips and we arranged to meet back in 2 hours. The rest of us got a taxi back to the Tuscany so we could drop off our shopping. Back on the strip we got monorail passes for the day as it was obvious we could not cover all the ground on foot in the heat in one day! Back to the Luxor and DS was not ready so we had drinks in a café inside the hotel. DS decided to stay on as he was $100 up so we agreed to meet him at the Bellagio at 7.30pm in the main reception area.

We took the tram and monorail up to the Venetian hotel. We went via the MGM Grand, saw the lion enclosure inside the hotel, and Harrahs. The inside bit in the Venetian with the canal and shops was fabulous! It was exhausting getting around even when using the monorail. It was often a long walk through hotels and casinos to find the monorail station! We went back to the Bellagio and sat in reception. It was now apparent that it takes a lot longer than you think to get around and the hotels were not always easy to walk to. DH was worried that DS would not find us easily and I thought it would be a miracle if he was on time as he would not reckon on how long it takes to go anywhere. But he walked through the door on the dot of 7.30pm! He had been running as he was caught out on the time but he made it! Reckoned he was $25 up on the day and he had really enjoyed himself. He had talked with the others at the table and made friends.

We went back to the Miracle Mile shops as we knew there was a Sbarro pizza outlet there. It took ages to get there and when we did we were disappointed with the shoddy service. We were all very tired and worn out. I suggested we could try to go home via the exit we were near as it looked like it would back onto a road near the Tuscany. We did this, came out into an underground car park and then into a street we did not recognise at all. By this time I had developed an enormous blister that was really giving me trouble and I didn’t think I could walk much further. I suggested calling a cab as I was in pain and we were lost. We then spotted one that was one the corner near us. We got in and one of the first things the driver asked us after asking if we were from England was if we knew who Reg Dwight was. ‘Elton John’ we said. ‘Do you think Elton John is a giver or a taker?’ he says!! This starts off a distasteful conversation re England’s gay celebs! Then when we ask doesn’t he know any other famous English people who are not gay he says ‘Harold Shipman!’ He then went on about our murderers being all called Ian. It was a very odd, creepy conversation!

We felt like we needed a drink once we got back to the Tuscany so DH and I went in the Sports Lounge while DS went in the Poker Room. DSis and DD went to bed. DH had a draft beer and I had a large red wine - $5!! We were in bed by 10.30pm and DS came back from poker at 11pm. It was an exhausting but great day!

Wednesday 8th August 2007

We were up around 8.30 this morning. DH asked if anyone had heard what he thought were gun shots in the night.

We went to the Flamingo Hotel this morning for a buffet breakfast. This was very nice, in a large room with glass walls looking out towards actual flamingos in the grounds. We went back to the Tuscany to freshen up before being picked up by a shuttle at 11.50am which was taking us to the tour centre for our Grand Canyon flight. The shuttle stopped at the Hard Rock hotel and picked up another English couple and then drove us to the tour centre. Here we were weighed and had to pay $14 in taxes (our trip was already prepaid in England). We were told we would be waiting for about half an hour for the coach to take us to the airport. We chatted to an American lady who was there; she was interested in the fact that DD was reading a mandarin phrase book. We laughed (nervously) at a sign that told us we would not be returning so we should buy our gifts now! In the end we waited nearly two hours as the company said all three of their buses had broken down that day! We hoped the planes would fare a little bit better!

We were taken by minibus along with the American lady we chatted to and her friend and another American couple to Boulder airport. Passed through some nice residential areas en route. Our plane was waiting on the tarmac along with our pilot called Walter. He informed us that the planes have safety checks every 50 hours of flying and this one was checked only 7 flights hours ago (yeah, right). We all got in, DD had the front seat next to Walter and we all had a window seat. We had headphones for a commentary, mine were extremely loud and DH’s too quiet! Very shortly after take off DS felt ill. DH thought he was sleeping but he was trying not to be sick. I also felt very bad from quite early on. I kept hoping we would speed up as the plane seemed to fly very slowly! The Grand Canyon was a wonderful sight, we were quite high up so I don’t think we appreciated the vastness of it. The same for the Hoover Dam. We could see helicopters below us who were obviously much closer. Took some photos which came out quite well considering how bumpy the ride was! We were in the air for around 90 minutes and it did feel quite a long time. DD was the only one that did not feel ill at all in the end! We had to tip Walter $40, but at least we all got safely and without incident!

The company took us back to the Tuscany in a minibus along with the others from our previous ride in. DS was keen to get back to the Luxor to play poker. It was just before 5pm so he left us there to get a taxi to the Luxor. We told him to get a taxi back when he was finished. DSis, DD, DH and I went to the Beachfront Café in the Tuscany for tea. DD had two hot dogs and the rest of us had pizza. We freshened up in the rooms before leaving to see the rest of the strip and to go to the Fremont Street area. On our way out of the Tuscany we were surprised and a bit disturbed to find that the hotel was hosting a 3 day ‘Lifestyles’ event! We had seen programmes on TV about these people; they holiday on Hedonism and are swingers! No wonder we kept getting looked at! Resisted the urge to sign up though’!

Near the entrance to the Tuscany we saw a taxi so we took that to the Treasure Island hotel on the strip. We found a place to watch the pirate show from outside on the sidewalk. We were surprised (although by now we should know better, we are in Las Vegas!!) to see that the ‘Sirens’ pirate show featured about a dozen scantily clad ladies and the pirates were just an after thought. We walked to the nearby Fashion Show Mall. Took ages in here to find a much needed restroom! They were about to close so we didn’t spend a lot of time here, just enough for DD to buy things in Claires and the Body Shop! We tried to get a taxi from here but were unable to so we walked back to the Treasure Island hotel; in the heat, after a long day and with my blister this was quite painful! Got a taxi to take us to the Fremont Street area. On the way we passed all the adult nightclubs and shops and it definitely looked a bit scary!

The light show at the Fremont Street area was spectacular. It shows every 30 minutes and people stop what they are doing to watch it. It was very busy here, a few casinos and touristy gift shops. We had a drink from the Starbucks out in the street while we watched the lights. Tried unsuccessfully to find a bar to sit in with DD so that we could have a Margarita. As we couldn’t do this we went back to the Golden Nugget where we had been dropped off and got another taxi back to the Tuscany. This taxi driver drove like a maniac!

Once back at the Tuscany we go to the Sports Bar but see that we cannot take DD inside. So we sit just outside on some seats before the main casino starts. We had two cocktails (blue lagoon margaritas), a Miller Lite and a coke and it came to $10.50!! After the drinks DH and DD went back to the rooms while I helped DSis lose $1 on the slot machines!! Got back to the room at 11pm and found that DS was already asleep in bed so I knew then that he couldn’t have won big at poker!

Thursday 9th August 2007

We had breakfast in the hotel this morning, at Marilyn’s Café. Laughed at the notices up in the kitchen area; things like ‘Don’t be extravagant with the napkins’! We checked out (Saw a few more ‘Lifestyles’ people arrive!) and waited outside for our limo to the airport. Our flight was for 12.05pm. We were off for our 9 night stay in Anaheim! We were dropped off for kerbside check-in. DH was chosen for an extra security check which we did not really understand, especially as our check-in guy went off and came back telling us he had done it for us. Had to tip him, $20 I think I gave him. Money just leaks out of your purse here!

Our flight was with US Airways to John Wayne airport (SNA) and took less than an hour. We had an interesting flight as all the way you could see places on the ground below. We landed at 1.08pm. It was easy getting our bags after we landed and no immigration to pass through. I had pre-booked a shuttle from the UK and we went outside expecting to see one. After a bit of confusion we did get a shuttle van and he took us all the way to the Best Western Pavillions in Anaheim. The weather in Anaheim was very similar to Las Vegas, dry and hot! We checked in at the Pavillions and like with the Tuscany they wanted DS to sign and leave a credit card! Really annoying when I am the one doing all the booking that the companies think the two men should be the lead names!

We dropped our bags off in the rooms. DH, DS and I had room 102 and DSis and DD had 104. These were on the ground floor next to the reception and were in a very convenient position. I asked at the reception for the best way to walk to Disneyland. I had researched this on the internet before we left but the girl on reception told us to go right and down to the lights on Disneyland drive and walk from there. This was not the way I expected her to say but we did it anyway. It seemed a long way round, especially in the heat and with my blister! We were excited when we came to the entrance, past the (useless) bag search and then we saw the Disneyland turnstiles and the train station behind them! Through the turnstiles and we were there!! The park did not look too busy in Main Street (Ha! How wrong we were!) and we looked around in wonder at the original Disneyland, the only Disney park that Walt ever set foot in. It looked just like the Florida Magic Kingdom but at the same time it was not quite like it. DH quickly stated he loved it here!

We wanted to start with Space Mountain so we walked over to Tomorrowland. It was quite a bit busier here; this was where all the crowds were! The wait for Space Mountain was quite long and we were hungry so we stopped at the Tomorrowland terrace for burgers and fries. We found an empty table, sat down and then were treated to a showing of the Jedi Training which was extremely loud! The line for Space Mountain had not gotten any smaller so we went around to Fantasyland and to Mr Toad’s Wild Ride! We had done this on our first Florida holiday in 1998 but it closed soon after that. We then did Snow White and then the Pinocchio ride. We went around to Pirates of the Caribbean and saw that it had been updated to include Jack Sparrow in some scenes. The lines for Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Railroad were long so we went back to the Matterhorn Bobsleds. Here the queue was not so bad so we waited. DSis and I were made to sit in the same bobsled, DSis had to sit on my lap practically!! We laughed hysterically all the way around on the ride, DS thought it hilarious! We went on Star Tours after that.

Disneyland was very busy and my blister was hurting me so much I was walking in a funny way so that was also hurting my knee and leg! We decided to call it a day and left the park. We had to walk through Downtown Disney to get back so we stopped off for a slice of pizza at Napolina. This was very tasty. DH spent some time looking for Oakley sunglasses at a stall and decided to come back when it was daytime. It had gotten dark around 8.30pm and when the sun went down some of the heat went as well; it was almost chilly at times! We went in the ESPN store and then walked back to the hotel. Once back we unpacked and I had a long hot bath, I was really worried that I may not be able to walk much further if my foot did not improve or my leg gets better. We were in bed by 11.30pm. The beds were comfy but felt small for DH and I, DS was OK in his bed to himself!

Friday 10th August 2007

The weather when we awoke was grey, like an English summer day! The clouds soon burnt off though and we had lovely blue skies and sunshine all day. We went across from our room to the Denny’s for breakfast. This was a real feast, so much food for breakfast!

We walked to the Disney California Adventure Park. I decided to leave the crocs and put on my sandals and this proved to be a good decision. Once in the park we went straight to the Tower of Terror. This was easily as good as its Floridian counterpart, and I think a bit smoother. DSis went on the Monsters Inc. ride while we did this. Then we went on Soarin’ (DH gave a running commentary which made DD comment!). After that we queued for the Grizzly River Run, a white water raft ride that would get you wet!! DSis and I had ponchos to wear and we got some stick for wearing them but we did stay almost completely dry!! DH and DS did get a bit wet but it was so hot they soon dried off! We walked over to the Paradise Pier area where DH, DD and DS did the Maliboomer twice in a row! We grabbed a McDonalds before DH, DS and DD went on the big roller coaster, California Screaming! While they were on this DSis and I walked around the Wharf area and got some grapes and a non-alcoholic cocktail drink. We all then went to the ‘It’s Tough to be a Bug’ 3D show. This was exactly like the one in the Animal Kingdom in Florida. Next we went to the Hyperion Theatre and saw the ‘Aladdin’ show. I fell asleep for the first 10 minutes but what I did see was quite funny, especially the genie. After the Aladdin show the four of us went on the Tower of Terror again. DS got chatting to a ‘hot’ girl in the queue. We backtracked across the park for a go on the Ferris wheel. We opted for a cabin that also spun around on a smaller track – this took us completely by surprise when it did it the first time! We had no lap bars but we felt it could have done with them, especially given you have lap bars in Snow White which doesn’t swing you at all! While we were in the air we saw the car park which was opposite our hotel. We reckoned we could walk across the car park and cross the road to the Pavillions and that this would be quicker than the route we had taken earlier. Our final ride of the day was the Monsters Inc. ride. DSis had been on it earlier in the day and then the person sitting in the back row of the car was specifically targeted for a cheeky comment. This time we made DS sit in the back row and when the ride was over the creature says to him ‘Hey, young man in the back. I like the look of you! Aren’t you in my closet?’!!

We left the park and went back via Downtown Disney. DH spent a ‘while’ looking in the sunglasses shop for Oakleys but did not buy any. We decided to stop by in the Disneyland Hotel for a drink. DS wanted a beer but we were asked for ID and we did not have his passport with us! He was a bit miffed about that. DSis and I had a tall cocktail each, very nice. We walked across the car park and came out opposite the Pavillions. We then had to make a short walk down to the traffic lights and then we could cross over. Much quicker this way. We were in bed by 10pm, although DH and DS did watch the Anaheim Angels vs. Minnesota Twins on the TV. They were off to see them tomorrow.

My blister was a bit better today in case you were worrying for me but I did get a bit of a sinus headache – hope I’m not getting a cold!

Saturday 11th August 2007

Today we decided as we were in no hurry for breakfast to walk a bit further up the road and go to Coco’s for breakfast. This was very nice as well, although they didn’t get the hot tea with milk thing either! We went back to the hotel to freshen up and then called in reception to use the phone for a taxi. I asked for one for 5 people but shortly a regular cab pulls up. We explain we need one to sit 5, we had told them that on the phone, and the driver calls another one for us. This one arrives, driven by Manny, and he takes us to the Block at Orange. Manny was a Beatles fan and talked about their tour over there in the 1960’s. He gave us his number and told us to call him when we were ready to go back.

We did some shopping at the Block: DD and I had a tee shirt each in Old Navy, DH and DS bought jeans there as well. DD got the new Harry Potter book in Borders, DH and I got a new paperback there. DD bought new pink Skechers in the Skechers shop. DS bought some tee shirts as well. We stopped for a drink in Johnny Rockets. I had a Mr Pibb again! The waitress fancied DS (he reckoned) as she drew a smiley face on the bill! We went back later for lunch in Johnny Rockets and this was very nice.

We knew we needed to leave by around 4pm to give DH and DS enough time to get to Angel Stadium for the game. DH tried to call Manny using his mobile but we could not be connected. So we went to a payphone and did eventually get through but we were beginning to panic! Manny took us back to the Pavillions for around 4.15pm. DH and DS had a quick freshen up and then called a cab to take them to the game. The game was to start at 6.05pm and they needed to go to the Will Call window to pick up the tickets when they got there. DH wanted to leave plenty of time for a good look around the stadium before the game started. Meanwhile, DSis, DD and I took all the dirty washing to the nearby BW Stovalls Inn so we could use the Guest Laundry. We loaded two washers up and walked back to the Pavilions. DSis and DD went in the swimming pool and I sat and watched them. I did rest my feet in the Jacuzzi and this was very soothing! I walked back to the Stovalls to put the clothes into the dryers. The clothes would take 45 minutes to dry so I walked back to our hotel. After DD and DSis were dressed we all walked back to collect the laundry. After putting away in the rooms we walked across the car park to Downtown Disney. DTD was incredibly busy tonight, you could hardly move in the Disney Store. We had a look at shops we had not previously been in. We stopped for a slice of pizza and a garlic knot at Napolina. I bought a few items in the Disney store – my Mickey snow globe which has a sign like the ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ one with Mickey, another tee shirt and DD kept putting things in the basket! We walked back to the Disneyland Hotel to go into the gift shop there but it was closed! We went back to the Pavillions and to my surprise found DS was in bed watching TV! He said they had been back about 10 minutes and that DH was in the Denny’s getting a coffee. DH had in fact stopped for a slice of apple pie as well!
They had a great time at the game; the Angels had beaten the Twins 4:3 but it had been a relatively short game. DH had taken lots of photos and also DH and DS had had a picture taken by a photographer which we later could see online and we ordered for our album. They had both received a free ‘Hall of Fame’ red cap and DH had bought a mug and a beaker in the Angels store. DH had really enjoyed it and would certainly do it again next time we came on holiday to the states.

Sunday 12th August 2007

We were up at ‘stupid o’clock’ today according to DS! In other words we up at 6.30am! We were in Denny’s by 7am having our breakfast. We needed to be at the bus stop outside before 8.15am for our pick up for the Legendary Los Angeles tour. At 8.15 on the dot the coach arrived, the driver had our names on his list so we got on the coach, sitting near the back. Then we learnt that we were being taken to the tour centre to check in and transfer to our coach for the day’s touring. We checked in with no problems, the tour centre had our details and that we had already paid. We were issued with a slip to give to the coach driver of our tour and we went outside and waited near his coach. Our driver for the day was called ‘Adnan’ and he was a real character. He asked whether we wanted the official tour or the ‘Adnan way’ so of course we all opted for his version thinking we would be getting something special! Adnan talked all the way there, mostly rubbish, occasionally pointing out things of interest, sometimes stopping illegally so we could take pictures! He was often thought we were not all listening to him so he would say ‘Oakey dokey – hello, hello?’ to us! Our first stop in LA was outside the Graumann’s Chinese Theatre. We had been warned about the characters outside and I had not known what he was talking about, but it turns out he meant the characters such as Elvis and Homer Simpson who wanted money to pose for a picture with you. So, when I spot Elvis I go right up and get a picture not realising he wants a tip! DOH! We saw the foot and handprints of people like Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Clark Gable, Natalie Wood, Cecil B De Mille and more. We walked down the street looking at the stars in the pavements; there were hundreds of them, some we had no idea who they were. We saw the El Capitan theatre which is now run by Disney, it looked very nice. We saw the Kodak theatre where the Oscars are held and the finals of American Idol. The thing was the whole street looked a bit run down and there were lots of tackier gifts shops there. We had one hour here and then we were back on the coach. Adnan took us to the Farmers Market so we could have lunch. We stopped briefly at the La Brea Tar Pits. I had heard of these but was surprised to find them right in the middle of LA! We were told we had two hours for lunch; this was part of Adnan’s special as the tour company only allowed one hour but according to Adnan this was not enough! The Farmers Market was packed with stalls and shops and places to eat. We split up 4 different ways – DH to get a turkey sandwich and a bowl of fruit, DDt and DS to get burgers, DSis to get a crepe and me to get a big slice of cheesecake and some cherries! We all met up in an upstairs seating area. DSis was last as her crepe had taken ages to make! She reckoned it was not worth the wait. The Farmers Market was OK but nothing special, nothing nice to buy so we explored a bit further a field. We were pleased to find a beautiful part of the city behind it with nice shops and a lovely square! And Adnan had no even told us about this! DH spotted the Apple store and was soon in there looking at ipods. He ground me down until I suggested he buy one! He chose a white 30gb ipod and was immediately happier that he had got a gift!! It was about £45 cheaper than getting it in the UK.

Back at the coach and onto our next stop – Santa Monica. Under the tour description I thought we had a choice, either a stop at Santa Monica or a stop at Venice Beach but Adnan told us he was giving us both places today! Santa Monica was the better of the two. We walked along the pier and got our first sight of the Pacific Ocean. On the sand below there were hundreds of white crosses, one for each US person killed in Iraq. It was very sobering; some of the crosses had names and pictures and letters from loved ones attached to them. DSis, DD and I took off our shoes and walked to the sea. We had a quick paddle in the water so that we could say we had paddled in the Pacific Ocean at least once in our lives.

We walked to 3rd Street and looked in some shops. Then desperate for the restroom we tried to find one but could not. We went to the indoor shopping mall and used theirs. There was a long queue here and the loos were not special. After, we went in the food court and DSis and I had a huge cupcake each. When DH and the kids saw them they changed their minds and DH had to go back for another one each! A quick look around the mall and then we went outside to meet Adnan and our coach at 5pm.

Venice Beach was not too far away but we did not like it as much. Two New Zealand boys on our coach tour, who looked like surfer dudes, loved it so it was probably a surfer thing. The trouble is DH and I had watched ‘LAPD:Life on the street’ and it always shows trouble at Venice Beach. Today there were a lot of stalls along the beach selling a lot of ethnic things. DS went into a tee shirt shop and got a tee shirt for Danny (I’m not a gynaecologist but I’ll take a look) and one for Adam (Vote for Pedro). DH described Venice Beach as ‘Ilfracombe with menaces’! Adnan had given us 90 minutes here but after 20 minutes we were ready to get back on the coach! We went back but it was locked so we take shelter in the nearest hotel which was a Best Western. They said we could sit outside and opened up the café especially so we could buy a drink.

The journey back to Anaheim was more subdued, Adnan didn’t talk as much. Adnan dropped us all off at our respective hotels. We gave him a good tip, it was $15 or $20, I can’t remember which. I don’t think everyone tipped him though!

We decided to eat our dinner that night in Marri’s Pizzeria which was next door to the hotel. This was OK, nothing special. DD was cold in there and DH was served the pasta with garlic when he didn’t order it. The pizzas were huge and DS had to take two slices of his away with him for the next day.

After paying the bill we stopped briefly in the Liquor Mart nearby so that I could get some sore throat lozenges as I had a bad one. It had been a long day, got our money’s worth I reckon. I don’t know what time Adnan should have finished but I didn’t expect us to get back as late as we did. We didn’t leave Venice Beach until 6.45pm. But my blister was getting better even if I had a cold on the way!!

Monday 13th August 2007

We were entitled to an ‘early entry’ to Disneyland today because we had 5 day hopper tickets. This meant that we could get into the park an hour before the general public were allowed. So of course we were up at 6.30am again! We decided to eat breakfast in the park so we dressed and walked to the entrance of Disneyland. We couldn’t believe the queues of people who were waiting for the regular 8am opening! We entered through a far right turnstile that was allowing the early entry people in, our tickets made a magical tingling sound when they were swiped! We were in Disneyland for 7.30am and the place looked deserted. I said it would be a good chance to ride Nemo now so we went straight to it. The line for Nemo was enormous – everyone with EE tickets must have thought the same. So we rode Space Mountain, without DSis at first as she was unsure how bad it was. It was fine, better than the one in Florida and nothing for her to worry about so we went around again. While we had ridden it the first time DSis had mistakenly changed $10 in tokens for the arcade games, she thought she was getting quarters, so DS, DH and DD used those up on the games before we set off for the Main Street Bakery to have breakfast. We had coffee (DH had almond syrup in his), tea and pastries and cookies.

The park was now open for everyone but it was still fairly quite. We rode Big Thunder Railroad followed by Splash Mountain. DH sat in the front seat on Splash and got quite wet; DS got one trainer full of water as well. The rest of us were OK! Then we went on the Indiana Jones ride, which I had heard good things about but was slightly disappointed with. We went back to Fantasyland and went on the Story Book Canal ride. We had to wait about 20 minutes for this and the line was not in the shade so we were very, very hot. It was turning into a scorcher of a day. We stopped for a snack and a drink at the Tomorrowland Terrace before deciding to go back to the hotel for a swim and a rest. We would return later in the day when the sun had gone down. We stopped at the China Closet shop to but some retro Disney Christmas decorations. DS was feeling ill again and sat outside.

Back at the Pavillions we asked in reception where the nearest Target or Walmart was. We called a taxi for the five of us to take us to the Target as recommended by the lad on reception. The taxi driver said the Walmart at Anaheim Plaza was better so we went there instead. We split up once in the Walmart. I got lots of Advil and make up; DD got lip balms and shampoos. We met DH and he saw a Casio watch he liked so he bought that. We also bought a new Fuji card for the camera which at the time we thought to be a real bargain, but it turned out not as good as one as we thought, but never mind. DS got some tee shirts and some chocolate. We got Lays crisps and Pop Tarts. After we had finished we called a taxi to take us back; one was already there at the Plaza so we had no wait.

We decided to eat a late lunch at Denny’s before we went swimming. We had burgers and fries and salad and fries. DSis had a melted cheese sandwich from the ‘Over 55’s’ menu! She also had a Cherry Limeade that DH then wanted. We changed for the pool, DS decided to stay in the room and watch poker and golf on the TV. We swam and used the Jacuzzi.

After changing and getting DS out of bed we walked back to Disneyland. The line for Nemo was still huge so we skipped this again. We went on the Matterhorn Bobsleds and this time I had DD sat on my lap. This does seem a bit dangerous; she could have knocked my teeth out if she threw her head back quickly! We went on It’s a Small World, much to DS’s dismay! We pointed out that this was such an iconic Disneyland ride you had to do it once! We walked around to Peter Pan’s Flight. We saw that the wait time was 40 minutes and were just saying to each other we didn’t want to wait that long when a cast member asked what we would say if we were told she could get us straight to the front of the queue with no wait time. We asked if she could really do that and she took us straight through the exit to the front of the line! A little bit of Disney magic just for us!! We were extremely grateful to her as we probably would not have done PPF that holiday because there was always a huge line for it. The ride was slightly different to Florida’s but still good.

We went to Frontierland and went on Big Thunder. We went on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride again. We stopped in Main Street for a drink and a rest. DS and DD were not feeling too well, we did give them the option of going back to the hotel but they wanted to stay. We shopped in Main Street; DSis and I bought a Disney watch each. We then made our way around to the lake where the 10.30pm showing of Fantasmic! was going to take place. It was manic there, we had to wait standing up and there were a lot of rude people in the crowd. The show was good, shorter than the WDW version I thought. We made our way home after it finished and were in bed by 11.15pm. My head cold was well and truly here and I didn’t sleep well due to all the coughing I was doing! We were shattered as we had an early start but it had been a really good full day.

Tuesday 14th August 2007

We had a lie in today as we were going to the California Adventure Park and this did not open until 10am. We had a breakfast at Denny’s, freshened up then made our way to the park. At Downtown Disney we saw preparations being made for the world premiere of High School Musical 2 which was taking place there later in the day. We didn’t know anyone that starred in it as we have not seen the first film.

First stop for the four of us in the park was the Tower of Terror while DSis made a phone call home to mum and dad to check on her cat. We all then went on Soarin’ (which DS called Borin’) and stopped after for an ice cream at Brr-Bank. The weather today was extremely hot, almost Florida humid. We went on the Orange stinger, Mulholland Madness and DH, DS and DD went on the Maliboomer again. We had lunch at Pizza Oom Mow Mow. DSis and DD went on the Golden Zephyr and Jumpin Jellyfish. We did Monsters Inc again and the Muppet 3D show. DH, DS and DD did the California Screamin’ coaster and we all went on the Sun Wheel. DS was not feeling too well again so he walked back to the hotel at 5.30pm. He said that he was held up going back as the High School Musical premiere was in full swing.

We walked around for a bit, had a drink and went to A Bug’s Land. DSis, DD and I went on Flik’s Flyers! DH refused to! We were very hot and tired and my cold was wearing me down so we decided to call it a day at 7.30pm.

Back at the hotel we decided to go to Coco’s for tea. DS did not feel like it, asked us to bring him back an orange soda. I had soup here and DSis saw the waitress had her thumb in it when she brought it over but did not tell me until afterwards!! We had a dessert voucher from the day we had our breakfast there so we had a free piece of pie. I couldn’t really taste my food because of my cold!

We were in bed by 9.30pm, watching Houston Astros beat LA Dodgers 7:3 on TV. We could hear the fireworks at Disneyland from our room.

Wednesday 15th August 2007

We were up at 6.45am today so we would be ready for a 8.15 pick up for our Movie Stars and Shopping tour. We had breakfast in Denny’s.

We waited at the bus stop and again the coach was bang on time. We were taken to the tour centre. This time I was a bit worried as this was the day I did not have an E-ticket for but had been assured by the company I would not need one. But I did! The tour centre manager was very helpful and sorted it out by telephone for me.

Our driver today was Dennis and he was very informative and not as annoying as Adnan. He pointed out the prison where Paris Hilton had been incarcerated – the new Hilton hotel. He dropped us off at Graumann’s Chinese Theatre again and we got onto smaller mini buses for our Movie Stars Homes tour. DS had to sit in the front seat next to the driver. The tour guide for this must have been a movie buff as he reeled off facts as we went along. If he mentioned a name once he kept repeating it about a dozen times, we reckoned he was on commission for each time he said a name! The first streets we went up were nothing special, all houses seem to be having building work done. The only one who lived up there that we were interested in was Ben Stiller and his wife. Then we went around the nicer areas but even these were so close to the rougher parts it was hard to believe people with money live here. We saw the front gates to Bruce Willis and Tom Cruise’s homes but couldn’t actually see the houses. We saw the homes of George Clooney when he stayed with his aunt, Rosemary, Sylvester Stallone, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Merv Griffith, Lana Turner – the house where her daughter killed Johnny Stompanato. We saw the house the Menendez brothers killed their parents in; this house was also previously owned by Elton John, Prince and Michael Jackson. We went down Rodeo Drive and Beverley Hills. We passed the Viper Room, owned by Johnny Depp. We saw lots of others, names we knew but didn’t have time to write down or remember.

On one street we had a road rage incident. Our driver was driving down a street when a guy wanted to pull out from his driveway. We would have thought that we had the right of way as we were already committed to driving by. But he thought differently and once he pulled out he chased the bus, tried cutting us up, turned around and started threatening the driver! The driver almost swore into his microphone (what the F is the guy’s problem!) but I was worried as DS was in the front seat and an obvious target! DS did have a good view and said the guy was pretty angry. Luckily the incident was subdued, our driver didn’t make too much of it and we were on our way again!

After the tour we were dropped off at Graumann’s. We took the escalator up to the shops and stopped in Johnny Rockets for lunch. We were able to take a clear picture of the Hollywood sign from this shopping arcade. DD bought some things in the Sanrio shop and DH and DS got cases for their ipods.

We got back on the coach for our journey to the Citadel Outlets for shopping. Before we left Hollywood we had a good laugh at the poor characters that were parading about hoping to make some money. A very skinny Spiderman and a really ropey Homer and Marge!!

Dennis told us we have two and half hours at the Citadel Outlets. I didn’t think this was long enough, a half days shopping was what we were promised, but in the end it was enough time. We did buy a lot here; DS got lots of clothes, I got some shoes in Clarks and Skechers, DD got some Skechers as well. DS also got himself some aftershave.

Dennis dropped us off back at our hotel around 6.30pm. After dropping off our bags we asked in reception for the nearest buffet restaurant. We were told there was a Hometown Buffet up the road so we walked there. This was a couple of blocks, past residential houses and the Hometown Buffet was obviously a local place. But for $10.99 all you can eat it was great. It did close at 9pm which made me think it was not for the tourists. When we were finished we went to the nearby CVS store. Got some more make-up as it was so cheap compared to UK prices. There was a Boots No.7 section – ‘As used in the UK’ it said. Noticed the prices were considerably cheaper than the UK prices though. How does that work? We bought a few other bits and pieces, DD kept putting things in my basket but as she was not feeling too great I let her without argument!

We were in bed by 10.30pm, another great day!

Thursday 16th August 2007

We were up early again for another 8.15am pick up. This time we were going to Universal Studios Hollywood! We had our usual breakfast at Denny’s, DS moaned as we hurried him over his menu choice and he chose cereal and a muffin to be awkward! We freshened up and went to the bus stop. After checking in at the tour centre, problem free this time, we went to our bus space and met the driver. This driver was very jumpy and said things to himself like ‘we can do this, take a deep breath’!! He was quite neurotic; I had been one of the first to be seen in the queue so going on the last two times we had been at the tour centre I thought we had loads of time until our tour left. It was only 8.35am and I thought we left at 9.15am. So I went to the restroom while DH went outside to find the coach. The driver wanted him to go back and find me as he wanted to leave right away! We did leave at 8.45am and were at Universal Studios Hollywood before 10am. The driver checked us all in, I expected to be issued a ticket for the park but as there is no ‘express pass’ system I suppose we didn’t need one. Just told to get a hand stamp if we left the park, but we didn’t put this to the test to find out if we would actually be readmitted!

We went straight to the Studio Tour as I had read this gets very busy. The tour incorporated a lot of sets from various films such as War of the Worlds, the Grinch, Psycho as well as street scenes where Dirty Harry, Pirates of the Caribbean and Desperate Housewives were filmed. The Jaws ride and the Earthquake ride were also part of this tour. It was very informative and the best thing to do in the park. DSis thought she saw Barry Bostwick being driven around in a golf cart. We learnt that there was an Alan Smithy building and this was named after a fictional director. Alan Smithy was a pseudonym that a director gave himself when he did not want to be associated with a bad film!

Universal Studios itself is set in a fabulous spot with views all over the city of LA and of the mountains behind the city. The city of LA is very scenic as well as the mountain backdrop it is peppered with very tall palm trees. As it is relatively flat it makes quite an impressive sight.

After the tour we went on Shrek 4-D, a really good show the same as the one in Florida. We stopped for a lunch of burgers and fries and had a bit of trouble getting a table due to table hoggers. It was very hot and very busy. After lunch we went in the House of Horrors. From the outside we didn’t expect much from this exhibit; there was stroller parking and it looked a bit fairground like. But although no great shakes it was hilarious as inside there was scenes from various horror movies that you walked through but also there was real people dressed up as the villains, such as Frankenstein, driller killer etc and they chased you around. DD and DSis were screaming and it was soooo funny to watch them. I didn’t particularly like the idea of being chased around by someone dressed as a monster either! DS said it was the funniest thing he had done all holiday!!

We wanted to do the Mummy ride and this was located on the lower lot. This meant taking 4 escalators down. Saw the Jurassic Park River Adventure but this was getting the people on it absolutely soaking wet so we decided not do it, even though it was incredibly hot. We went to the queue for the Mummy. The queue started outdoors and was unbearably hot but we stuck with it as there really wasn’t anything else we wanted to do there. The ride also broke down while we were in the queue and we didn’t move for ages. I think it took about 45 minutes for us to ride and it really wasn’t worth the wait, it was nowhere near as good as the one in US Florida!

Back up the 4 moving stairs to the upper level and we looked around the shops. We found a shady seat for some Dippin’ Dots ice cream. We had to meet the coach driver at 5.45 for a 6pm on the dot departure. We left the Studios at 4.30 and looked around City Walk. DD bought a few things there in a kitsch shop. We saw an eccentric woman all dressed in pink with a pink dog that she was carrying!

We were on the coach at 5.45pm and already a lot of the others were on board. 6pm came and we were waiting for 2 or 3 others and the coach driver was getting a bit upset as he had been quite clear that if we were late he would not wait. He waited 5 minutes but then pulled away and we were left wondering who the people were that had missed the coach!! It would be an expensive ride back to Anaheim for them! We witnessed the LA traffic jams coming home as well. The driver had put a video film on for us; it was called ‘Soccer Dog’ and has to be the worst film in the history of film making!! We laughed about that. Was it directed by Alan Smithy?

I had really wanted to have a decent Italian meal tonight. I knew there was a place called Buca di Beppo that I wanted to try nearby but the lad on reception said that it was too far to walk. We had a basic map with it on and it did look a long way but not impossible. But we were tired and voted to get a taxi there. This did not happen; the first one we called arrived and it did not seat 5 as requested. He told us we would have trouble getting another at that time of night for 5. The lad in reception called one for us but we waited and nothing arrived. We decided to walk to the nearby Tiffy’s Family Restaurant. I was a bit annoyed as I thought I would have to settle for fries yet again but I ordered spaghetti with marinara sauce. This came with a salad and garlic bread and was very nice. We all ordered ice cream desserts and they were huge! I could not taste mine due to my cold but I ordered a marshmallow one, ice cream, cream and nuts on it! We were sat near the window and had an excellent view of the California Adventure park’s Ferris Wheel and the roller coaster. Also heard a traffic accident happen outside to which the paramedics and fire engine had to be called. Everyone was looking out the window and the driver whose fault it was made a rude signal to the waitress to tell her to go away! The bill for this meal came to $87.62 so it was the most expensive one we had all holiday but we had all had desserts and DSis and I shared a half carafe of wine. Still very good value by English standards; on my credit card bill it was £44.23.

We were back to the hotel before 10.30 after looking in the gift shop and buying some postcards. We noticed that the person in the room next to us (Room 101!) was dressed in a Scottish kilt – most odd!

Friday 17th August 2007

After a later start to the day we were up and out at 9.15am. As this was to be our last full day we planned to go to the California Adventure first, come back then go to Disneyland in the evening.

We stopped at La Brea bakery for breakfast. Had coffee, juice, muffins and scones. DD was pleased to find the Nightmare before Christmas bracelet that she really wanted in a shop there. We went on the Tower of Terror again, then Soaring over California, California Screamin’ and the Maliboomer. It was very hot and crowded so we had a last look around before setting off back to the hotel. On the way we decided to see the Whoopi Goldberg presentation on the history of California. This was a nice 20 minutes in an air conditioned cinema so it was a welcome break!

As we passed the Grand Californian Hotel’s entrance which was in the park we decided to have a look around. We were told we could get to Downtown Disney from there so this was ideal. We looked around the gift shop and were pleased to see the DTD entrance was right there. In typical fashion we had found an excellent shortcut on our last day! We usually find the best place to eat on our last day as well!

Once in DTD we stopped for a slice of pizza at Napolina. DH and DS were hot and tired and they made their own way back to hotel while DD, DSis and I shopped. Got a lovely Boston Red Sox snowman and another Christmas decoration in Department 56. We went to the Disneyland hotel and into the gift shop that had been closed last time. Bought a tee shirt for me and some chocolates as presents in here. Walked through the hotel grounds and back to our hotel.

DS stayed in bed watching TV while we went to the pool. After drying off we were on our way back to Disneyland by 6pm. The line for Space Mountain said 40 minutes so we decided to go back later. The line for Nemo was still stretched as far as you could see. I would loved to have known how long it would take to have gotton on the ride from the end of it. Needless to say we did not do Nemo this time! The Matterhorn Bobsled queue was not very long but it had broken down! We did Big Thunder Mountain once more then went over to the Pirates ride. Guess what? It broke down while we were in the queue! Come on Disney, shape up! We did stay and eventually rode it one last time. We walked back to Tomorrowland and ate burgers and fries at the Tomorrowland Terrace. DSis got her and me pizza from the Pizza Port. There was some really loud band playing and we couldn’t hear ourselves speak. After that we went to Innovations. Saw a computer with Google Earth loaded and we found our house in Exmoor View but it was a really old picture taken before we had the conservatory built. Our Laguna was on the drive. DS had had enough by this stage and left the park to go home. We carried on and did the Haunted Mansion, then caught the train around to Tomorrowland again and watched the fireworks from the walkway there. We decided we had to queue for Space Mountain one more time; this was a really long wait, about 40 minutes I think. We shopped in Main Street and bought a coffee on the way out. We were back at the hotel around 11pm. It had been an exhausting but happy last day. It felt really sad to leave the parks and who knows how long it will be before we go back. We definitely would go back; we loved Disneyland and the California Adventure and thought it had been a great place to visit.

Saturday 18th August/Sunday 19th August 2007

We had a bit of a lie in today as we did not need to check out until noon. We packed, only needed one extra holdall and went for brunch at Denny’s. We sat in the back this time as the place was really busy.

After leaving it as late as we could we checked out about 12.15 and then had to sit in the reception waiting for our shuttle to LAX. This was booked for 1.50pm but luckily it turned up at 1.35. The shuttle driver (Prime Time Shuttle) was really nice and handed us free bottles of water as it was so hot.

LAX is a huge airport and it was quite exciting to think we were there as we have seen it so often on TV. We checked in and then looked around the shops. DSis and I got some strange flight socks! I also bought some Clinique which I had to collect before boarding the plane. We were boarded at 5pm and we left on time at 5.50pm. We had no extra legroom this time. DH and DS sat by the window, and then me, DD and DSis in the middle aisle. DSis had a fidgety boy next to her. Shortly after take off the rude woman in front of DSis and her equally rude son reclined their seats right back so DD and DSis had hardly any room! DD did ask them to out them upright when the food arrived but they came right back down again! The films on board were Blades of Glory (DS watched), Spiderman 3 (DD watched), Perfect Stranger (me, Bruce Willis was in it!) plus an episode of The Office. The lights were dimmed after the meal was served and we settled down for the flight. I don’t think we managed a lot of sleep between us. I watched the planes progress on and off and was surprised to see we were still flying over North America 5 hours after we had taken off – that’s how big the USA is. We landed at Heathrow less than 11 hours after we had taken off. It was grey, cloudy and 65º outside!

We passed immigration, collected the bags and made our way to the arrivals lounge. We heard someone shout ‘DH!’ and saw the chap who was to drive us all back home. It was a really good idea, he drove all the way without stopping and we were back home at 3.45pm. My mum had left us some bread, milk and some filled rolls to eat. Grandad came up to pick DSis up to take her back home. DS went out to play poker with his mates and didn’t come home as he had forgotten his key! We were all in bed by 10pm; we all had the next day off so we could take it easy.

So, that’s that! After almost 18 months of planning and looking forward to the trip it was over. It had been a brilliant holiday; I’m really glad we did it and look forward to going back to Las Vegas and California again in the future, hopefully.

If you have read this far then thank you for bearing with me. We had a really great time and hope this has come across in the reports. This trip report is edited from the one that I print out for own scrapbook so I hope it still makes sense to you! I have 28 pages now to file and finish off with my Disney scrapbooking stickers. Sorry for not putting in pictures at this stage; if I work out how to do it I will post some soon.

If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch and I will gladly help if I can.

Bye!! :thumbsup2
