Largest Ride?

So on our last trip to WDW, my sister and I were exchanging facts about rides and the parks. Honestly, I had never realized there was an elevator in Haunted Mansion. It never clicked! It's so obvious!

There was one question I had that neither of us could answer and we can't seem to find the answer online. Maybe there is no definitive answer - it's up for discussion!

What is the largest ride at Disney World? Not the longest, the largest. What ride takes up the most square footage? My guess would be Haunted Mansion. That's a pretty large space. Maybe Ellen's energy adventure, or is it something not enclosed, like Splash Mountain or Expedition Everest?

I would think Test Track if you consider the actual building and then the outside track as well....it covers some ground!

1. No elevator at WDW's HM. There is one at DLR's HM.

2. Largest at WDW is likely Kilimanjaro Safari at AK.

Ummm... it's not so obvious. There is no elevator in Haunted Mansion at WDW.

I'm pretty sure its the safari over at AK. That ride takes up A LOT of space

My mistake. I read it somewhere and was very confused by the stretching room.... Didn't even think of the Safari... DUH

Wheres the elevator in Haunted Mansion? Disneylands version does have an elevator you walk into at the very start. It takes riders down below Disneyland where you then walk through a tunnel and into the ride building itself and board the doombuggies. At WDW the 'elevator' isn't actually an elevator. The ceiling rises above giving the same illusion that exists at the Disneyland version.

I would guess Everest. If you include the entire space of the mountain and queue.

Interesting question

I once heard you could fit the entire Magic Kingdom in the Safari, so that would get my vote. Note sure if it is true, but it a very large area.

  • Animal Kingdom: 500 acres
  • Epcot: 300 acres
  • Hollywood Studios: 135 acres
  • Magic Kingdom: 107 acres

You can fit almost 5 Magic Kingdoms in the Animal Kingdom.

I don't believe MK would fit completely within the safari, as the safari is irregularly shaped...but the length and width at the widest points as similar.

But in that case I think the WDW railroad might win.

But then even bigger than that is the MK monorail loops. :)

As for the Haunted Mansion, at DL they needed a way to get the guests from the HM entrance, which is within the perimeter of the DL Railroad, across the tracks to the ride building, which was outside. So the Stretching Room was created. At DL, the floor and the wooden part of the walls drop, bringing the guests below grade. They then walk under where the tracks are to the loading area.

At WDW there was no need for this, as the entire HM building is inside the perimeter, but to preserve the part of the attraction, they instead had the ceiling and walls raise up.

Although almost all attractions in MK are within the railroad's perimeter, there are two exceptions - Splash Mountain, which the railroad actually passes through, and Space Mountain. Similarly to HM at DL, they needed to get guests from the entrance inside to the building outside. But rather than build a maintenance headache like an elevator, they opted for long hallways that went down and then up.

Not Pirates?

Not Pirates?

I'm pretty sure that Pirates is completely inside as well. There is an adjacent building right outside the tracks, but I don't think it is part of the show building. I could be wrong though.

Edit: You mat be right...I looked at the overhead, and didn't think that there was enough room between the buildings, but then forgot that it's actually underground at that point. Then I thought about how much room the entrance, shop and queue take, and even though the pirates building inside the tracks is large, it's probably not large enough.

I think that makes Pirates significantly larger than HM if we are talking about ride building size. :)

Pirates definitely goes outside of the railroad perimeter.

Pirates is in two buildings... when the boat goes "over the falls" or down the drop is when you are going under the train tracks and into the other building. Thats why you need to ride the people mover escalator thing back up to the first building at the end...... learned that on my KTTKT
