Laptops blah blah blah . . .

most of the uni's ive looked round and the college im at now [which might stay on at] all use macs but then its hard to then come home at each semester to back up work and wont work on the pcs... using the macs to pc hasnt been to bad these past two years but i will be doing much more computer work now so that might make sense to think about
my high school is all pc, rly rly sucky pcs from i swear the '90s!!!!(we put sooo mcuh money into the sports programs but can't buy new computers! sry, mini-rant) i've spent all year converting. if u use textedit on the mac u can choose to save it in document Word form. i always save 2 copies, the .doc and the RTF. then i can open it on what ever.

I have a HP G62-144DX Notebook, and I love it

I know you can't tell from the pics, but it's got this cool triangle print on it, that reminds me of the "giant golf ball" at EPCOT

ugh ew that's crazy. i know about two seconds after i walked away from the thing my hands started to feel really gross lol, had to get some sanitizer
yup... my friend got rly sick from playing with the apple store ipad. i guess every single display they tested had feces on it. gross!!!!!!

i just got a Macbook Pro 13.3 inch and so far i love it so much better than a PC. My old laptop is a Toshiba and it served me well for three years

my school uses windows on pcs officially. i know the students that i've talked to with macs complain that they have a hard time finding a mac on campus that they can print from. another girl in one of my classes last semester was on a mac and when she submitted her papers to our professor, she lost a TON of points and almost failed the class because Pages couldn't format correctly when opened in Word. the professor thought she was slacking through it and not using the proper formatting, but really it was just her word processing program messing with the way Word reads files.

those were points she shouldn't have lost. i'd find out what your school uses mostly and go with that. you don't want to be stuck with something like that girl in my class had.

I'd do this, too. A lot of students at my school that have Macs have complained about a lack of compatibility.

I've got an HP Pavillion 17". It is a bit big, I kinda wish it was smaller, but I do watch quite a few movies and TV shows on it, so it's nice to have the big screen. I just test my backpacks (measuring them) before I buy them to make sure it will fit. I've had it for just under a year now and I love it. The other reason I got one so big is because I wanted a full key board. I NEED a number pad, I hate using the strip because I learned how to type numbers on the number pad. Purely a selfish reason.

And don't forget, a PC can do just about everything a Mac can do. Photoshop and all that will run on a PC and they tend to be cheaper (unless you get yours as a gift. I paid for mine flat out).

I paid a little over $600 for 500GB hard drive and 4GB RAM. Although, it seems that I might need to be investing in an external hard drive for movies and stuff. An external is a good idea anyway and I've been meaning to get one. It's good for backing up files that you don't want to lose or just for storing ones that aren't necessary to be kept on your actual computer. And another good way to back up your files is to e-mail them to yourself.

As for use in class, there is never a guarantee that your teachers will let you use one, so don't go in 100% thinking you're going to take all of your notes for every class on your laptop. I had two teachers this year that flat-out did not allow lap tops in class (and I can see why. I know I spent a least a few of my classes where I could bring my computer hanging out online and playing solitaire. NOT the best strategy in college).

I second Shelby. DO NOT GET A DELL INSPIRON 1525.
It was the biggest waste of money for me. The battery stopped charging, and then now it doesn't even work at all (I do realize the latter is from me never using the battery, but really.). I have to leave it plugged into the wall, all the time. I can't leave the dead battery in (I'm not sure why I'd want to but yeah) because it causes the screen to go white when I turn it off. Also, if the battery is still plugged in and the computer is left on by itself for more than 10 minutes, the display gets darker, and I cannot see anything. I cannot make it get lighter other than to restart the computer.
I had issues with the harddrive as well.
This computer is almost two years old, but really started having problems at six months old.

I'm planning on getting a macbook pro, in fact I should be getting it next week when I go to orientation. There is a good deal right now going on for college students from apple, where they give you a reduced price on the laptop and a free ipod touch if you buy it this summer. Our familiy has the 17 inch one, and I think that's a little big for college, so I'm getting the 13 inch one.

I got my macbook about 3 years ago, I've been using it all throughout uni with no issues. I bought the windows pack that comes with word, excel & powerpoint so when I do essays & presentations everything is compatible.
I don't remember how much my macbook cost me but it's still in top form after 3 years of my carrying it around in my backpack everyday.
My sister has an acer and it sucks...she can't even use it if it's not plugged in! SO I wouldn't get that. I don't know much else about PCs, but if you can go mac, I would recommend it.

If you end up getting something that runs on Windows and you don't feel like paying for Microsoft Office, you can download Open Office for free. It's essentially the same thing, just a tiny bit different and FREE. I used it all year and didn't have any problems. You can save a document/project to be compatible with just about anything.

All I can remember at the moment (not with me right now) is that it's a toshiba. My advice, don't get mine. The keys come off like majorly easy. I've had 2 come off, all plastic thingys off those 2, and one squishy thing. Btw.....anyone know how much it costs to repair a keyboard?
