lanyards vs hats, etc to hold pins

I got the lanyards from DL last time we went and 2x they fell off my DD because of the break away velcro. Luckily she only had one pin on the one that got lost and the other we found right away on the ground.
I don't trust them now for our next trip. I understand about the safety thing with the velcro but I don't want to lose the pins either.
So I was thinking of using a hat or maybe a scarf for the pins. We're not talking about a ton of pins either-maybe 6 for each kid since they are just starting.
thanks for any advice

First of all I never wear a pin that I would be upset if I lost it, unless I have locking backs. You might want to try to get a pin with two backs to secure the bottom of the lanyard (one on each side) to avoid the velcro issue. Wearing them on a hat is sometimes uncomfortable, as well as sometimes heavy. A scarf isn't a bad idea, but I think you'd have the same problems as the lanyard since scarf material is normally very light.

We just got back last night and DS and I used hats instead of lanyards this time. We'll do the same thing next month. The lanyards are just too hot and uncomfortable in the summer. We wear our lanyards in the Fall, Winter and Spring. We didn't have any problem with them making the hat too heavy but we didn't keep more than 5 on there at a time. We had to wear a hat anyway to keep the sun off so it wasn't like something extra to deal with. We didn't use any locking backs but we didn't put any pins on the hats that we wouldn't want to loose. :goodvibes
