Day 12 - Friday, Jul 4th 2003 or the Day I tried to Kill my MIL
We got up early, around 6:30AM because we were determined to be at EPCOT before they opened. Funny, we got there around 8:30 and they were already open. Cool, an extra half hour. We finally took a group picture. Id been wanting to do this all week but for some reason was unable too cause someone from the group was always missing. After we posed for the pictures we headed for Spaceship Earth. Paul took Nick and Lauren to Innovations (cause SE is dark). We found them shortly after the ride and I sent David ahead to get Fastpasses for Test Track. The first group to ride was Dave, David, Jackie, Chris, Paul and of course me. We got to ride twice because the line wasnt too long yet and the CM was very nice
Roz, Laura and Steven rode after we got back.
From TT we headed to the Wonders of Life pavilion. First was Cranium Command, followed by The Making of Me. Then the group split up and some wandered around while the others went on Body Wars. Moving on we headed to the Universe of Energy. At first it looked like Nick and Lauren were going to be okay with this but at the last minute they decided not to ride. So Roz and Paul took them over to the fountains to play in. When we came out we decided to split up cause next on the agenda was Honey I Shrunk the Audience. Roz and Paul took their kids to Innovations while the rest of us headed over to the Imagination! Pavilion. On the way over we stopped at the Cooling Station were we were able to get unsuspecting first timers (Mom, Chris, and even poor Steven) to try Beverly
Evil I know but we just couldnt help ourselves. Got Fastpasses for Honey and rode the Figment ride. It was time for our Fastpasses so we got in line for Honey.
We then went to the Land. Daniel was asleep so I volunteered to stay with him and sent the rest to go see Food Rocks. They ended up seeing the Circle of Life because they couldnt find the elevator. Everyone was getting tired so we decided to call it a day and leave. As we were heading out we heard Mission Space was open. Now, I should have just gone with Dave, David, Jackie and Chris and rode Mission Space but no I decided to go home with Laura, Mom, Steven and Daniel. Dumb, cause what happened next never would have happened. After stopping to get our pictures we split up with those guys heading for Mission Space and the rest of us going to the vans. The idea was wed put Moms ECV in the Mammoth and ride home with Laura in her van. So, I open the van and put the lift down. Tell mom to ride the ECV on the lift and then drive it into the van. She would have to duck and at first she did but the ECV wouldnt move so she lifted her head and tried again. IT moved, way too fast and Mom hit her head on the van. Blood was pouring out of her head. I was horrified. I tried to kill my MIL. I got her back down off the lift and Laura got a diaper to hold to Moms head to try and control the bleed. I cant tell you how bad I felt. Mom said she was fine. I was freaking out. Good thing Laura was there. She asked Mom if she wanted to go back into the park to the First Aid Center but Mom said she just wanted to go home. So we loaded into Lauras van and hurried back to the house. Roz was there with Paul and the kids and the first thing she did was get the camera to take pictures. By the way, Laura was filming part of it too, to send to Major John. I feel great - NOT - everyone is gathering evidence for my trial. We cleaned up the blood and Roz found a large gash. We called the Hospital at Celebration and Roz and Paul took Mom over there. Everyone kept reassuring me that it wasnt my fault but damn I felt really bad. Dave called after they rode Mission Space and I told him what happened. He asked if Mom was okay, told him she was at the hospital, he said okay, were going to Innovations and then well come home. Okay at least he didnt think I tried to kill Mom. Dave and the kids got home around 7PM, Mom got home shortly there after. Mom had 9 staples in her head. Nobody but Dave wanted to go watch the fireworks - I was still feeling guilty. We had a PS for Ohana for 8:30PM and after much persuading by Mom and Dave everyone except Roz and Mom were going. We got to Ohana exactly at 8:30PM and was told it would be at least 30-45 mintues - after the fireworks. So we went down to the beach and waited for the fireworks. They were awesome - Im glad Mom and Dave forced us to go. They did a salute to the military - playing each of the branches songs; that made Laura cry. She really misses Major John and Im sure it was pretty hard on her. The fireworks were everywhere. Red, White and Blue and just beautiful. After the show, Paul and Laura decided to take their kids home instead of eating at Ohana so it was just Dave, Jackie, David and I who showed up for our PS for 14
Dave fell in love with the place. I ordered a Backscratcher (okay I was still pretty upset about Mom) and after drinking that I felt a little more festive. The steak was the best Ive ever had. We took our time eating (our waitress was not the most attentive) and after stuffing ourselves we headed home. Said good night to everyone and went to bed.
Day 13 - Saturday, Jul 5th 2003
Mom, Roz, Paul and the kids are flying home to CT today. Their flight leaves at 9:30AM so everyone is up early to say good bye. Everyone assures me again that Moms accident was not my fault and we all hug and say goodbye. The rest of us have no real plans for today so the boys head for the pool. Around Noon Dave and Jackie drive up to the outlet mall to get her snowglobe. Its not exactly like the one at the World of Disney but Jackie actually likes it better and its cheaper which means she can buy the Disney Bear she saw at Downtown Disney. So when they get back we go to Downtown Disney one more time. Dave finally purchases his Monorail addition - he chooses the Contemporary Resort cause hey we stayed there this time. Jackie picks a Purple Disney bear and David finally settles on his choice of souvenirs - a commemorative coin and 4 pins. Everyone has their souvenirs from the trip now. We also have 4 new t-shirts, a sweatshirt, a new pair of PJs for Jackie, a photo album, three 5X7 pictures, 4 new magnets for the fridge, my new ornament and Laura presents me with a Mickey charm as a thank you for organizing the trip. Not a bad haul
We all spend most of the afternoon packing. Laura and I split most of the left over food (and it was quite a bit too). I did more laundry, washing the sheets and towels Mom, Roz and family had used.
We order pizza for dinner and settle in to watch my other passion - the NASCAR race. Its the Pepsi 400 and they are in Daytona this week (wish I was there). Steven really gets into it, watching most of the race from my lap until he finally starts to fade. Chris fell a sleep on the sofa long before the race was half over. My driver doesnt win but considering how weird the race was he did okay. Laura went to bed early with Daniel because she plans on leaving around 3AM again. She borrows the alarm clock from our room and I tell her she must wake us up so we can say goodbye. She did wake us up, I got up hugged her and the boys, said goodbye and immediately went back to bed - I was dead tired. Dave stayed up until they actually left and then came back to bed. Tomorrow we leave - bummer.
Day 14 - Sunday Jul 6th 2003
Get up around 8AM. Our trip is finally coming to an end. How utterly despressing. We strip all the beds. Wash the towels. Clean the kitchen (the one thing they are very specific about in the handbook for the house.). Dave vacuums the carpet. We finally load up the van and pull out of the driveway shortly after 10AM. We stop and get donuts from Dunkin Donuts, then stop at Publix and buy soda for the trip home, fill the gas tank at a Hess station and were on the road by 11AM. The drive home was uneventful but somewhat sad. We got home to OK around 9AM on Monday Jul 7th. The cats are happy to see us.
Will post final thoughts after today's NASCAR race.
