Lake Lanier, GA

I'd like some information on things to do in the Lake Lanier, GA area. We are looking to rent a house on the water, preferably with a boat to rent. I've been checking out vrbo.com, but I need to know what else there is to do in the area. Hiking, biking, restaurants, movies, shopping nearby? And how is the lake water? Pretty warm in the summer?
