Are you definitely wanting a lake house to rent or just be near enough to a lake to get some water activities? The Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area has tons of rentals available. Douglas lake is near that area. Also Townsend & Walland are in the Smoky Mountains with a small river (over-sized creek) that has some rentals on it. Google Great Smoky Mountains Visitors guide.

I second Lake Lure. It is beautiful.

Also, Lake Murray in South Carolina. There are lots of rentals there.
