Ladies, I think I have a UTI... What helps?

I've never had one before, but I am 99% sure I have one. Blah. And it's my anniversary on Saturday. This gets a little graphic... ;)

Woke up this morning and had to pee (obviously). It was odd, because it stung. I thought nothing of it, because I had a big glass of wine the night before, and then went right to bed. I figured it was the acid in the wine that was making it sting.

I still felt funny when I got to work, went to the bathroom again, and felt the same stinging. Immediately, I thought "UTI". I quickly drank about a liter of water :scared1:, and then I had to pee literally every five minutes, and I did... for about TWO hours. Immediately afterwards, I was having spasms and felt stinging down there. Really irritated. I took a Mortin, and that helped 100% with the spasms.

Called my doctor, and while I can't get in there today, he wrote me a script for a mild antibiotic and I have an appointent on Monday if that doesn't work. I'll pick them up later tonight when I get back home.

In the meantime, I no longer feel the "urge" to pee AT ALL, only irritation "down there". There is also blood when I pee, and still the stinging, but NO urge, so I am sure I irritated my tract during my 2 hours of straight peeing. :sad2: I'm starting to think that it never WAS a UTI, only irritation, and I made it TOTALLY worse.

Would AZO help?

Eat blueberries, drink cranberry juice and try the Azo. Just be warned, Azo turns your urine a bright fluorescent orangey/red.

Azo is a painkiller, so it should help, and yes, remember that it will turn your pee fluorescent orange!

Blood in your pee is not a good thing. I'd recommend keeping the doctor's appointment on Monday whether you feel better or not.

Antiboitics!

You need to see a doctor.

Feel better soon!

It could be a kidney stone...same thing happens with those.I would ask to check for that.

Today is Wednesday waiting till Monday is a bad idea. Can you just walk in to an emergency care center? They can at least test your urine to make sure the antibiotics prescribed are correct if you even have a UTI at all. The blood in your urine makes it a bit more emergent.

Hope you feel better!

Antibiotics! I have ended up in the ER from one of these before. Just FYI once you take the antibiotics, they won't be able to test your urine so they won't officially know if it was a UTI or not (since you said you are going to take them now but won't be able to see your doctor till later). But make sure you pay attention to your symptoms and if they clear up because you might need a different antibiotic if the one they gave you doesn't clear everything up.

The frequent urination is VERY common with these (but all that water you drank was probably the culprit for that!). Stay hydrated, avoid sugar (especially sugary drinks).

Unfortunately once you get one, you are more prone to them. I'll cross my fingers that this is your only one!

Azo Standard is great, but you should probably get some antibiotics. I got them so often that I started having to take a small dose of antibiotic daily to prevent them.

don't wait!!!! cranberry juice is good, but you really need antibiotics and it can go from uncomfortable/annoying to painful very quickly.

Thanks everyone!

Doctor couldn't get me in Thursday, and he is off Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays (he's old, ready to retire... I need a new doctor. :sad2:). I could go to an urgent care if it gets intolerable.

I'll get some AZO when I pick up my script. So scared to take it and turn our brand new toilet bowl orange :rotfl: DH would kill me! I'll stick to the downstairs bathroom. ;)

Feeling pretty good now, just irritated. No fun.

Go to urgent care even if it's not unbearable. Do you have those clinics in Target, Walgreens etc near you? Blood in your urine that you can SEE is pretty extreme. Do NOT mess around with your kidneys. You can cause permanent damage. It's a quick painless test and boom, you have an answer. Waiting until MOnday is totally unacceptable. Good luck.

Have you had your kidneys looked at? I am sorry to be so freaky on this thread, but I have three kids with urinary reflux and it can really be a bad thing. If you have recurring UTIs you could very well have reflux which can easily easily cause kidney damage.

Definitely get to a doctor. Bleeding is BAD. I'm really surprised your doc didn't work you in... usually for a UTI they will move heaven and earth to see you. At least he called in a script for you. Hopefully you'll be feeling better tomorrow.

And Azo is awesome. It's so great that you don't have to have a script for it anymore. I used to hoard those things when I got UTIs because not all doctors would prescribe them.

What is your prescription for? Which antibiotic? If it is sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (brand Bactrim), that is THE antibiotic for UTIs and you should feel right as rain (ha! I made a pun!) in a couple of days (but finish the prescribed course even after you feel better).

AZO (OTC drug) works well to relieve the pain and burning. It makes your pee look like orange kool-aid so be prepared.

I appreciate the concern everyone is expressing!

If the bleeding hasn't stopped by tomorrow morning, I will go. As it is now, I don't get home until LATE.

I wish I had wrote it down... I wasn't listening 100%.

Does the AZO stain the toilet? LOL. I am REAL worried about that! :rotfl:

I just had one. Go to CVS minute clinic. In about 5 minutes they tested and I got my Rx filled right there for $30 in total. I love CVS minute clinic!

Usually the urgent care places are open from 6 pm on and are reasonably priced. Blood is not good. IMO you should be tested before you start the antibiotics.

I really feel for you. A UTI is one of the most miserable things to deal with. The very first one I had I also bleed with it. My dr will never call in a prescribtion for this without a urine test since as other posters have said it could be another problem.
I also have bladder spasms sometimes that mask the infection but always test negative for infection. I actually gave up an carbonated drinks because that always made it worse. The last time this happened it lasted about two weeks and one of those weeks we were in Disney. The only thing that got me through was the AZO pills.
Also, I think only certain antibotics will clear a UTI. I think my dr always prescribes Bactrim. I also think they now sell kits at the drug store that you can test for UTIs.
I hope you start to feel better soon.

My gynecologist never mentioned this and I did not really start having problems until I got married, if you know what I mean. But thank you for mentioning it and I will definitely look into it. I have a family history of UT and kidney problems.
