As my other post states, we are spending a few days out of our two week trip in LA/Hollywood. I am a bit confused about the area of LA to stay in...we will need a Marriott brand hotel which there are many but I really need advice on the area. I have read downtown is not the place to stay. Our girls are most excited about this portion of the trip. The want to see celebrities. LOL! We are doing a few tours, seeing Walk of Fame, Hollywood sign, etc. All the Hollywood touristy things to do. Also going to try to get into Ellen or a taping of a Disney/Nick show.

Any advice??

We have a 16 year old and a 20 year old so ages for tapings should be ok. We are going in June so I am hoping to get tickets then. How soon are we able to do that?

So many areas in LA/Hollywood...still after reading online and in a guidebook, I'm unsure the best/safest/easiet place to stay?

I was surprised to see the tickets for March posted. Keep checking the calendar to see if you can figure out a pattern for when they update. They might be on hiatus in June, but early in the month you have a chance.

The good news is because your kids are older, there are more shows they might be able to see. Read this thread for info about the popular Disney tapings:

Hollywood is quite nice. I know some aspects scare people but it's much safer
than many big cities. Unfortunately there are no Marriott properties in
Hollywood so looks like you'll have to stay in downtown L.A. or Burbank.
Try the Residence Inn Burbank

One thing about LA is that if you want to walk out of your hotel to some sort of entertainment, you're going to be paying $300+ per night. You'll definitely need a car if you're staying at a Marriott. There's a Courtyard in Culver City, a Marriott in Marina del Rey. I've been to events at both of those, they're in nice areas. By the airport there's a Rennaisance, a Marriott and a Courtyard that seem pretty comparable to the other airport hotels. There's a Residence Inn south of the airport in El Segundo. Other areas that might be nice depending on hotel location and what activites you're looking for:
Santa Monica (pricier as you get closer to the beach), Sherman Oaks, Burbank, Pasadena.

The Marriott downtown LA is within LA Live (Nokia Theatre, Staples Center, Convention Center), I would consider this area safe.

Burbank is a really nice area of the San Fernando Valley & is really safe. Warner Bros. & Walt Disney Studios are in Burbank & Universal Studios is very close.

You're getting some good advice about the hotels. What will be your main focus the two days you're doing LA/Hollywood?

Our focus in Hollywood/LA is definitely the tourist type things. Our girls are hoping to see celebrities. lol! We are doing the Warner Bros tours, the Celebrity Tours through Starlite, Hollywood sign, Walk of Fame...etc.

We are using Marriott points so price doesnt matter. We are a bit of hotel snobs. We like the JW Marriotts and Renaissances but are open to anything within the Marriott brand. We will have a car since we are driving done the coast from San Fran to San Diego.

I am still at a loss on a central, safe area to stay which will not be too far from the above mentioned places.

If anyone has other ideas for things to do/see while in La/Hollywood, please let me know.

Thanks for your input.

PS..If we were to stay in Burbank, would that put us too far away for most of these destinations?

Bottom line, there is no Marriott brand hotel in Hollywood, you will have to drive there no matter where you stay. Realistically, you're not going to see a celebrity in Hollywood. You're just as if not more likely to see someone famous walking down the street in Santa Monica than you are at a tourist site in Hollywood. The WB Tour will at least let you see sets, just keep your eyes peeled for people walking and driving around the lot. If you're worried about driving time, use Google Maps to check the distances between hotels and the places you want to see. You can see the walk of fame, Chinese Theatre and Hollywood sign all from Hollywood and Highland. It should be a tour stop for every Hollywood tour. Check with the Hollywood chamber of commerce, there may be a star unveiling ceremony while you're there, so you could plan to go see that.

Personally, I'd probably pick the Marriott in Santa Monica that is about a 2 block walk to the beach and a few more blocks to the SM Pier. It's a short drive to the far end of the 3rd St Promenade, where there's 90 minutes free parking and then $1 per hour during the day in city lots. The closer end of the promenade and the SM Place mall are walkable, but also have city lots. The Starline (or Grayline, not sure which) hop on, hop off bus also stops there, so that could be another option for getting to Hollywood Blvd.

If the priority was going to Hollywood multiple days, Sherman Oaks might be closer, but I don't know that area as well, which is why personally, I'd pick the beach. If I knew for sure there'd be a red carpet premiere at LA Live, then the Marriott there might be a good choice, but again, not a priority for me, so I wouldn't know a lot about the logistics.

Burbank would not be too far away from Hollywood-about a 20 min drive, or so. All surface streets, for the most part, which could be a plus.
