tell me about dinner at kona... i have already checked out the menu (at allearsnet.com) and found a number of dishes that tickle my fancy... the prices are reasonable (although it's really a non-issue 'cause we'll be on dining plan)... but what is the atmosphere like? the word "cafe" in the title makes me think of light and airy and not quiet and romantic... i'm hoping for something a little "adult" as it will be just dh and i while the kids are at the neverland club...

needless to say, i would love to hear food reviews along w/atmosphere reviews! :flower:

You are correct. Light yes. Airy yes. Quiet no. Romantic, well, that's up to you. Honestly, I *love* Kona. The food is fabulous. It's a beautiful place, but it is definitely not V&A's atmosphere. If you want romantic atmosphere, this isn't the place for you, but if you just want good food, Kona is hard to beat. The pressed pot coffee is fabulous and I *love* the sticky wings. Maybe go to Kona with the kids and choose another place for the quiet romantic meal? Cali Grill, Shula's, Narcoossee's come to mind.

but here's my dilemma... my kids want to go to the neverland club... and dh and i are happy to let them... but we don't want to be that far away from them in case there's a problem (ds has some medical issues, including a life-threatening peanut/treenut allergy) so we want to dine in a restaurant that's in the same resort as the kids' club... i was actually thinking we'd go to 'ohana simply because we would love to try it but "can't" take ds there (we could, but the peanut dipping sauce makes me too nervous, all it has to do is touch him, he doesn't need to ingest it to have a reaction) but then i got to thinking that maybe kona would be more "adult" kwim?

i wish the cr still had a kids' club 'cause i would love to eat at concourse steakhouse! (we are major carnivores!)

what to do?!

We love Kona and you won't be dissappointed. It is nice area far from the caos of O'Hana check-in. Food is fabulous! stickey wings, pot stickers, terryaki beef, salmon and desserts are to die for! I don't think you will be disappointed. Whe our DS was 9 (he is 14 now) we left him at Neverland and he loved it. We took monorail to California Grill for a fantastic romantic adult meal and all was well with our son. We picked him up in time to walk to the Poly beach and see the water parade!
Connears

While not the most romantic restaurant at WDW, Kona is still very attractive. One side is open to the inside of the resort. Kona is by far my very favorite restaurant at WDW. I can't wait to return in July. We are planning breakfast, lunch, and dinner there! Does that tell you how much we like it?

i think we passed it on our way to 'ohana for breakfast last year... is it real "luncheonette-y" looking?

Kona is my favorite restaurant. I love going there for a lunch break and the food is superb IMO.

Here's a few pictures so you can get a better feel of the place:

its light and casual atmosphere...like dining at a cafe in hawaii i would guess....they have this steak teryaki that I might kill for! :D

Jungle Josh

To me, the atmosphere is exactly like the coffee shop that preceeded it-Coral Isle Cafe. Definately not romantic. Lots of noise from O'hana next door, plus all the people walking by in the lobby area just ouside the restaurant.
BUt I hear the food is supurb, so that may be reason enough to try Kona.

Quiet.....no
Romantic.......no
Food......FABULOUS!!!!!
We discovered Kona two years ago and just ate there last week on our last night. It is on our MUST DO list for all upcoming trips. You won't be disapointed in the food.

Enjoy!!!!

ITA with the other posts - It isn't the most romantic or the quietest of restaurants, but the Food is FABULOUS! It is one of our very favorite WDW restaurants. A must-do for us on every trip.

Note to self....If Jungle Josh is nearby do not order the steak teriyaki :rotfl2:

I just figured out how to post photos. Here are some photos of the food we ate at Kona on June 12.

Sticky wings

Crab Cakes

Mahi Mahi with extra shrimp

Pot Stickers

I forgot what this was called, it's Kona's version of the Lava Cake. YUUUUM

poodlebud, do post those pics up on the food porn thread up above. Those are awesome looking pics.
