I've read a lot of good things about the food at Kona Cafe, but how is the atmosphere? Is there any to speak of, or do you just go for the food. The menu looks graet, but for me, atmosphere is almost as important. Thanks!

You just go for the food. There are 3 walls and the front is open to the lobby area (2nd floor) of the resort.

I have read here that if you are seated near the front, it can be very noisy with the crowd waiting for 'OHana.
We are going for the first time in April

As others have mentioned, it is an lively, bustling restaurant, open to the very busy second floor lobby of the Polynesian. We enjoy it and think it is a very pleasant setting for a meal, but there is certainly nothing special about the atmosphere.

We adore the food, though.

We are going in August. I heard it's really loud. Is it quieter in the back of the restaurant?

I often hear there is no atmosphere at the Kona Cafe, and sitting close to the lobby is bad, but I feel the opposite. We actually request to be seated along the railing. I love lookingout into the lobby and seeing the foliage in the middle. I think it makes it feel tropical, but I am in the minority. I should add Ive never found it overly noisy.

I agree with you CamColt. I like the bustling beauty of the lobby at the Polynesian. Kona is one of our favorite WDW restaurants. Yes, it can be a little noisy, but my experience shows me that's par for the course in WDW.

I think it has the atmosphere of the Coffee Shop it replaced---
but from what I read, the food is quite good.
It's always noisy as all get out at bkfst, but can't say for sure how loud it is at dinner.

I agree! We've had many, many meals at the Kona Cafe and I truly have never thought it had a negative atmosphere. :confused3 I've never thought it was "loud and bustling" either. And I've never, ever heard noise from the lobby, no matter where our table was.

The Kona Cafe is not a quiet, romantice restaurant, but neither is it loud and boisterous which makes me think more of a cafeteria. And the Kona Cafe is NOT like a cafeteria! LOL It's not the most heavily themed restaurant, but I do think it has a nice, casual restaurant feel to it, and you definitely know that you're at the Polynesian resort. My entire family loves this restaurant.

Here's a bad, out of focus picture that I took from inside the Kona Cafe. I wanted to show a bit of the decor. When we go in May again, I'm going to be sure to get more pictures of the interior of this restaurant. For some reason, all of my other Kona pictures are of the food only :teeth:

It's a typical hotel lobby restaurant - not what I would expect for a quiet romantic dinner for 2 but there is lots of people watching if you enjoy that! Loud, open to the 2nd floor lobby area of the Poly, lots of people. Very active =)

We go for breakfast. We love the Tonga Toast so much that it's our special breakfast at home (Boxing Day...that's the day after Christmas...and recently my birthday). It's good at home (it gets better with practice) but nothing beats it at Kona Cafe.

I've never had a negative thought about the atmosphere either. I like being able to look out into the lobby. Way back in the day, it was enclosed and not any better or worse than it is now, from what I remember.

I can't wait to go on my next trip in May.

LOL! Glad Im not the only one, SeaSpray & Leota! :)

Also, I know this is such a minor detail, but I love the ceiling fans. Every time we are there I think they would look great in our living room. :teeth:

Have had breakfast, lunch, and dinner there. We will be back there soon.

we went to kona for a late lunch (about 2.30)just before we headed off to mnsshp and had a wonderfull meal there :) we didn't find it too loud, we are thinking of having our wedding meal here seeing as we will be married at sunset pointe :cheer2:

We had dinner there in October, mostly because of the proximity to MK, and a desire to see the resort, as we had not been there in 10 years or so. The food was GREAT, and the atmosphere, while not as heavily themed as most Disney resturants, was quite pleasant and relaxing. We'd certainly go again.
