I'm trying to work on a couple of transportation challenges for two trips right now.

For the one trip in June, I'm looking for the best way to get 51 people from the Bayside Inn (in downtown San Diego) to SAN. Does anyone know the name of a transportation company that they've had a good experience with? I've been seeing a lot of bad reviews and am hoping that someone will have a good suggestion for me!

For the second trip in July, DD (14) and I will be taking Amtrak from Anaheim back to San Diego, arriving late at night. We'll need to have a ride from the Amtrak station back to our loft in Gaslamp Quarter. Again, I've seen horrible reviews for the main cab companies and am trying to find a reputable car service that I can count on. Anyone have a recommendation?

:drive:

We've used Super Shuttle a number of times, including a drop-off and pick up at the Santa Fe Depot (Amtrak.) They got us to the airport and Amtrak depot in plenty of time. The only issue we had with them was arriving via Amtrak in the late evening. We had to call the dispatcher to get one of the vans to stop at the depot to pick us up. It was just a minor issue as the van came from the airport which is not far from the train depot.

Thanks for the tip! DH was able to book through Super Shuttle to get our group of 51 to the airport, so hopefully that will work out nicely.

DH came across a private cab driver who charges a flat fee of $20 to take you anywhere in the SD area. This guy got really high ratings, so DD and I may use him for our trip from Amtrak back to our loft. Seems worth it to have someone reliable at that time of night.

I may still contact Super Shuttle for another part of this second trip, though. Either that, or we'll do a one-day car rental. Our entire family of 5 will be needing a ride from SAN to Town & Country Hotel downtown to register 3 of us for Comic Con, and then on to our loft in Gaslamp. We'll also need to get to a grocery store, and then DD and I will need to get to the Amtrak station the next morning to head to Anaheim. Decisions, decisions! Anyone have further advice on this?

51?

Don't most people simply book a charter? I was looking up some charter bus website, and many have buses seating up to 57 for $325 for an airport transfer up to 15 miles. Google Maps says the trip is only 2.2 miles, but I guess that would depend on the terminal. If it's that close, they might arrange a lower rate.

The 992 bus also goes from the San Diego Amtrak station to the Airport every 15 minutes during peak and 30 minutes otherwise. However, I'd like to see how they would react to a group of 50+. That would probably mean splitting up. It's only $2.25 per passenger with seniors $1.10. Kids under 5 are free. Of course this is maybe 3 blocks away from the hotel.

bcla, thanks for the link. We typically DO book charters when we take large groups of youth on trips like this. DH and I have gotten stung in the past, though, when we have booked charters without paying attention to reviews.... filthy buses, broken A/C in 100 degree heat with no windows to open, a driver that made us 90 min. late by going the wrong way (aka "I know a short cut!"), etc. We had recently gotten a good quote from a bus company, but right after that, DH started to get hounded by lots of emails and phone calls from them, wondering if we were ready to reserve a bus. DH did further research and found plenty of bad reviews about this company's buses not showing up, running late, etc. so we quickly ran the other way! :scared:

So, that's why we decided to come on the DIS and keep our options open, in case anyone has had exceptional service from a transportation company and would like to recommend them. Having said all that, we're booked with Super Shuttle so we're all set for that trip. Still working on the July trip though, if anyone has any recommendations. :)
